The SNES port took out Ivan Stewarts and replaced him with Mickey Thompson, an off road racer who was murdered, and put in the game totally without his families permission :S
The SNES version is unbelievably easy, to the point you can max out your cars stats after only a couple of races and are literally unbeatable by then.

I remember playing the arcade machine at a couple different places when I was a kid. Very distinctive with three (closely spaced) steering wheels.
Great multi-player game. If a kid can reach the wheel, they can play it. I generally don't like top-down racers, but it has a "easy to learn, hard to master" kind feel.
If a person spots one out in the wild, give it a try. Especially if you have someone else to play with.

SNES and MD ports were good.. but the real surprise was the magnificent Amiga port.. a deal breaker at the time.. it was like having the arcade (3/4 of the screen at least..) at home! Regarding complaints about "having to push up on joystick to accelerate", at least on C64, you can just hold the stick up for a few seconds at the beginning of the race to reach the full speed, and then let go - the speed will stay at max, unless you slow down by pressing down. This might be the same on some other ports too.
And agreed on the NES version being bad - it looks like Super Sprint until you hit some bump on the road, then your car bounces, and then it's back to super sprint mode. On any better ports, the cars bounce all the time, seemingly out of control.

The Amiga version runs full screen... if you run it on a NTSC machine. The thing is that most Amiga games were PAL, but some of them were released on America. Amiga PAL resolution is 256 lines high while the NTSC is just 200 lines high. S0 some developers didn't use all the height available on screen so the game would display properly on either NTSC or PAL machines, but you would get a huge black area on bottom on PAL machines. This happened on a lot of Amiga games.
And what most people will remember about the Amiga version was the Cracktro... I am sure every Amiga owner back at the day had seen and has vivid memories of that Cracktro :D
I Loved Super Off Road the first time I played it... most of my friends didn't like it, but I remember I found it to be super fun. Mega Drive port was awesome IMO, while the Amiga one was very solid too. Had never seen the MS-DOS version before.
I've played the SNES version and I remember I felt something was wrong with the playability there. Can't remember what, but I remember I didn't like it at all.
And about the SMS version... Graftgold actually did a few SMS games... later support of the system came mostly from Europe, curiously. Also I think it's the only 8 bits version that is actually doing the "3D Effect" properly with trucks dissapearing behind the walls. Kudos for Graftgold for doing this properly on a 8 bits machine. (ALAS, even doing it on Amiga was a very good job :D )
EDIT: Just noticed on the video the NES version does it too :D

Spent a lot of time on Amiga version. Thanks to the great work of Graftgold (Rainbow Islands on western computers, Simulcra, Realms, Fire And Ice, Virocop and so many others on 8/16bit computers), this time western computers are the closest to the arcade. But emulation seems often to have the "flaw" of showing the display tricks of the time. Some expand display on a fullscreen area, other don't. In this case, Amiga, ST and PC versions are basically the same using 320x200 screen resolution, while arcade uses 320x240. So we have only 40 pixels lost vertically. So on computer versions we don't play on "a half" of the screen and MS-DOS version is fullscreen only because frequency is set to spread picture on the whole visible area of the screen, that is not the case on Amiga and Atari ST using 50hz frequency. But if we play on a real Amiga/ST using 60hz frequency, now the game is even smoother, faster and picture is near to fill all the visible area of the screen.
Back in 1989, I think we just didn't pay attention to that so I really loved this game, but where I agree with you is the use of up/down to accelerate/brake, that is totally stupid in an overhead racing game. If only they added a control redefinition option, maybe we would be able to use a 2 button controller. I suppose Graftgold made this choice because it permits to use nitro without the need of the keyboard.
Megadrive version is really nice with near the same resolution as on computers (320x192 + 8 pixels for the title of the track) and control are far more occurate. GFX uses colors that are a bit different from the arcade ones but it's for the best. Just the music is difficult to hear more than two minutes. SNES version has better sound and offers some nice GFX effects (a good work from Software Creation). The low screen resolution needed to adapt GFX, making them smaller, but they are so much more detailed than the original ones... But if you think gameplay is better on Megadrive, so it is better on Megadrive.
Funny to see that this game is better to play on its home ports this time because it is totally unplayable using a standard controller emulating it.

Graftgold Co-Creator, Steve Turner talking about transition to consoles:
'Consoles were very similar to the 16 bits, espically the Amiga as it had lots of hardware to assist you.The SEGA systems used the same assemblers, so we could use a SEGA version of the same development system.Dealing with the console licensor as well as the publisher also took more artistic control away from us.They had their own ideas and made sure you adhered to them even if you had more experience making the correct game decisions'.
On why he felt later titles did'nt sell as well as Uridium and rainbow Islands:
'we still had the magic, but things had moved on.What the commercial industry praised were bigger, more expensive products that did'nt seem to rate the gameplay.Even with the 16-bits the empasis was on better graphics than better gameplay.Movie sequences also stole the limelight'.

I've never been a huge fan of this game, and I don't remember it ever being a high traffic game at my local arcades, but it was one where it was in the back, and cost 1 quarter/token, so it was always an option to finish out your playtime, when a lot of games where 2 quarters/tokens, or more.
Now when it comes to the home ports, I'm kind of bias as I had the a cracked C64 version my uncle got in a trade at a C64 users group(got most of my games, and software that way) LoL!
Also for a while my local mom and pop video rental had the NES version for rent, and for an extra fee you could get the NES Satellite with 2 controllers, so for one sleep over with friends, my mother said okay to us getting it, and yeah it was the LAST time we ever rented it, as the controls are GOD awful!!!, and this is coming from a Nintendo fan who has Mario, and mushroom charms hanging from the backpack I take to work everyday, and in that back pack I keep my NEW 2DS XL LoL.

    edit: few thoughts...
First off, I didn't remember the NES version being bad, let alone THAT bad :v
Weird that only the arcade version has engine sound FX!
The SNES version has surprisingly crisp music although it might not be that surprising since it's a rather basic game with the minimum sound processing and RAM required so most can go into the music.
Wasn't the Mega Drive version unofficial at first and re-retailed later on but official this time around? Also this version has some extremely "electric", high pitched music which might not be for everyone but I personally enjoy them with even a tune that I absolutely adore, which is "Hurricane Gulch". What a belter!!!
The Game Gear version added scrolling works well indeed (won't same the same about the Game Boy version though xD)

@ben owen Well, like I said, I can totally see why the Mega Drive version's music aren't for everyone but I personally like some sort of unusual, experimental music which is partly why I enjoy so much chiptunes in general and with their mixture of high-pitched leads, fat bass and even some cowbells at times, the music in the Mega Drive port of Super Off Road are quite crazy and, for the most part, right up my alley (although the leads could have been a bit beefier like the ones in Crüe Ball for instance which are eargasmic).

Interesting collection. Had a playable demo of the CPC version. It was no worse than Codemasters' F1 or BMX Simulator. Have to say though, the whole point of this, and Supersprint etc with the whole track on screen was so four could play at the same time, and this needed the arcade cabinet.
Perhaps the developers could have considered a scrolling screen door the conversions, like they did the Game Gear.
Also made me think of Rock n Roll Racing : same concept but the scrolling isometric play area was a superb derivative of this style of top down racer.
