  • · Notes:
A very quick video about extreme low light video shooting with Sony A7SIII. I made this video since I was looking for raw examples of night sky videos with different cameras and couldn't find many. Since I am not sure how many people are interested in this topic - I have left some answers unanswered to keep the video short, but if you are interested or have more questions - let me know in the comments, I will answer them there and maybe make more content around this topic in the future!
Over all - this camera & sensor are beasts for low light shooting and produce well controlled image in low light, not much color noise in crazy ISO values. Even with an F4 lens it is possible to capture some things in the night sky but if you're serious about low light shooting - an F1.4 or faster lens is a must!

    · Get to know me:
What is my name and age, what name I go by?
    - My full name is Matiss Skujins, I am 21 years old and go by the name Matt!
    · What country do I come from?
    - I've grown up and spent most of my life living in Latvia - a truly magical and beautiful place! With that being said I am currently set in Denmark and live there!
    · How long have I been doing videography?
    - I have made videos since a very young age starting from backyard phone videos which I edited on my brick phone, to gaming related content in my teens, but have started seriously getting into advanced videography in the past 3 years.
    · What is my thing..?
    - Recently I've started making more documentary type of videos, I started out making "cinematic" transition style stuff but I didn't like the unrealistic feel it gave, so now I am making more "down to earth" type of videos in which I try to present a new idea or a thought I have, or make content about other things people can relate and think about. I try to present feelings and adventures outside the house, outside my comfort so viewers can be inspired to do similar things and experience life to the fullest.

Nice video Matiss! It was nice to see the difference between the 2 lenses and how lucky we all got with the northen lights. I was a bit late on the party so only could catch a few photos in my garden with my phone hahahaha

As long as you saw a little bit! I feel bad for those who missed it, truly amazing!

Me watching this with no need to ever shoot in low-light: Nice knowlage, I'll just keep it at the back of my head incase I have to use it!
Jokes aside those are some amazing results!

This is absolutely extreme and I can’t see myself using these scenarios for any professional work, but it is nice to know that anything that is shot in better conditions than these will have better results. It only gets better than this

This is something I have played around with a bit on my A7iii and sigma 40mm 1.4 when out photographing the Milky Way. Didn’t think it would have been possible before I tried it, although it is pretty noisy. I imagine the a7siii with the much larger pixels would produce far better results for low light video.

A7S iii defined has a better noise performance and the way it renders noise. I personally remember A7 III having some weird motion artefacts when filming in low light. My Astro Documentary was partly filmed with a7 III and A7S II

Doest shooting with slog3 ruin nigt time videos? You are basicaly cranking tiny strip of black and grey even more and when decompressing you loose lots of information. Seems using slog in places where there is almost no bright spots in the image is counterintuitive. I may be wrong

Yes and no. Picture profiles are just a way to control exposure and choosing how you want information to be written in the file. So although at a first glance using no picture profile might give you better results right out if camera, If I find myself having a funny or memorable moment in darker parts of the image, it is easier to recover it with slog. Gerald Undone did a great video comparing Picture Profiles and in the end - most of them give very similar results with basically the same amount of noise. I have yet to test if slog vs regular effects color reproduction which might have an effect.
In my experience shooting Log in the night gives me the ability to create realistic results with controlled contrast and creative looks if I want to for example - have the foreground still visible but want to add teal to the shadows.

@@matiss.skujins Intresting to see the comparison, because people on the internet say to use regular profile for extreme low light. Would be interested to see real world comparison and not Geralds controlled studio environments. Because I often see that controlled studio tests dont work in real world sometimes, or impossible in those conditions

@dzheyd9609 True! It’s a good idea and I now actually want to go out and do some myth busting! Might do a follow up 🙌🏼
