Let's make it a Lang Lang arrangement. That way it is just uninspired instead of being bad. Takes all the wind out the piece's romanticism. Not very pleasing to hear.
It's perfect. If I could ever play it, that's exactly how I would play it. It's full of energy and craziness. Playing a piece like this so freely shows another level of mastery that I have never seen before
If you dilettantes and snobs had more than an eye drop's worth of musical knowledge, you would realize that Liszt likely performed this piece differently every time. That's the nature of a rhapsody... we're not talking about a Bach partita or a Beethoven sonata. It's meant to be fun, flashy and even frivolous. Some of you need to relax and smile :)
@David Segarra I like that one a lot too. Lang lang is more reliant on high energetic gestures and lisitsa does more with her tone. They are both great in their own ways.
If you once watch the notes on paper- you may cry out for that arrangement. If the artist not feels the sadness of the first, slow section- andante- "Lassan" -means slowly- the allower play is not interest me. Search, and watch Hayato Sumino (Cateen) who made his own cadenza- but HE touch the perfect tempo for "Lassan"- and also great interpreting the "Friska"- also the rithim is so good from him.
I think this is great! It seems like he loves his interpretation, makes me love it just as much. Who cares if you don't think it's the best interpretation, Lang Lang owned this piece. It is his because of his interpretation. When you started to stigmatize the interpretation, it strips the music of it's magic. Let's celebrate his achievement, not stigmatize ! respectfully.

All this video was missing was a tiny mouse running around all over the piano upset that he lost his blanket and pillow do the hammers moving up and down.
Because Langlang is so much more mechanically skilled, he could play it in a way where some other pianists might think of but can't get to because of skill limitations. He's a freaking beast!

If Liszt would been on crystal meth it would sound like this. Not for everybody and definitely not for the ones that hoped to hear the original score, but my god what a great performer this guy is! The original is one of the most difficult (popular) pieces to play. He plays it as it’s too easy. Again, not for everybody, I love the original but this guy is a real boss.
I didn't notice any shaking, but his smiling makes me cringe. And at the risk of sounding insensitive, I can't imagine what this piece has that would lead to tearfulness. Are there elements of sadness or tragedy here that I'm somehow missing?
I love the way he expresses himself in the music and becomes one withe piano - so emotional, dramatic and beautiful. He is one of a kind. A true master - you can see how much he loves it

Music is such a magical thing that human being have. And every musician or artist has his/her own interpretation for the same piece of music. That makes music more interesting rather than damaging. Real artist does not just play with his/her skill but through heart. I like Lang Lang. Seems to me that he is really melted in every piece of melody. He is a true artist.
don't know why any of you are criticizing this performance when his voicing of the melody is second to none. notice how each part has a clear melodic line -- this is very difficult to do consistently and can only be obtained with professional piano training. If you actually play piano you would understand and should not be criticizing this interpretation.

The arrangement is Vladimir Horowitz's btw... one of if not the greatest pianist of our age... so i would argue Horowitz's interpretation of his own arrangement is better :P but Lang Lang makes it look very easy - almost as easy as Horowitz, so hats off! 👏

Notice how he is incapable of keeping speed going consistently, hence all the tempo changes. Extremely overrated pianist.
