My sisters and I have just spent some strenuous and stressful days (spaced over several months) trying to declutter our childhood home. Mom is 101 yrs old and in a skilled nursing facility now. The house is a large farmhouse on our family farm. My mother lived there over 60 yrs and is a packrat hoarder. She always attributes it to having grown up in the Depression, and later having had to make do because there wasn't much money.
That has made me take a hard look at my own home, and all of the "stuff" I have, store, don't use, but don't want to let go of because I spent so much money on it, or maybe I'll need it sometime in the future. I'm slowly making the trips to the donation center, several boxes and bags at a time. You're right. I don't miss what's gone. I want more gone. I'm getting old and won't have the energy for this soon. But I don't want anyone to get stuck doing this after I die or have to leave my home. It's my responsibility.

Carol Taggart ...I recently cleaned out my mom’s possessions. She had been decluttering on and off for a couple years, but had not been able to let go of things that had sentimental value. Just like you, it made me rethink what all I had and to look at it through the eyes of the people that would have to dispose of it at some point! Our moms grew up in a time before there was a $General on each end of town and she had to make do and “shop her stash” of miscellaneous items saved. She never could throw away something that she might need later.

I've done that and sometimes it even works. Some of them say yes but it'll take a month for the cancellation to take effect, so you may keep getting catalogues till then. So you wait for a month and the catalogues keep coming.
And only slightly off topic, because it isn't paper - a company I bought from sent me emails about twice a week, until the pandemic, when it became once or twice a day. I unsubscribed, and a few days later got an email: "Are you ready to reconnect now?" Aaargh!

Yes. I also go with the one touch method. We walk from the garage into the house. On the way to the house door all the junk mail, envelopes etc are put straight into the recycle bin. They never enter the house. Once in, receipts are filed to be verified when the bill comes in, filing is done and SOMETIMES there is an item I have to deal with later which is on a plate thing. Later will be within a couple days. I hate paper clutter and finally have it figured out. Old fashioned daytimer for events, mtgs etc

I once had (I kid you not!) a big, rectangle clothes basket that contained my paper monster, filled to the brim! Every time I looked at it, It nearly gave me a nervous breakdown! But it kept growing. One evening, I dumped it smack in the middle of the living room floor, where I had 3 choices . . . work on it, let the cat continue to use it for a bed, or keep walking around it!! LOL!! I went thru it piece by piece, and found, among other interesting things, a check for over THREE HUNDRED dollars!!
Nowadays, the mail might lay on the end of the counter for a day, but never longer, and I keep a small box behind a door in the kitchen and most everything goes in there for shredding.

This week we started remote learning. I have a preschooler, Kindergartener, and 2nd grader. It was quite chaotic yesterday but it felt AMAZING to be done by noon! I started having anxiety with the amount of papers coming in after only one packet pick-up! So I created a system in which each child has a wall basket, where all of their work is located. They each have an incoming folder and an outgoing folder. In addition, I have a little file box with different color folders that contain papers that they may need to use all year (i.e. math doubles rap) and for temporary papers that are for the week (i.e. spelling list). I just need to make sure I go through this at the end of the week! It did help lessen my anxiety to create a system. Now back to my pile of bills to file...😫😫😫 I am going to use some of your AWESOME tips and tricks! Thanks for sharing, Dawn!🙂

I'm at the scarey stage! Thanks for this topic. Repeatedly I've gone through a huge pile, felt good about it, but the stuff that's got to be filed now sits and sits. Just like you said, it's gotten shuffled around to where I had 5 big piles of the scarey unknown. I'm down to 2 piles!!! That, my friend, is "progress not perfection". I appreciate you so much.

Coupons stressed me out because I had to worry about them expiring, then I'd be mad at myself if I didn't use one before expiration... Then buying stuff I didn't really need just because it was on sale or had a coupon... It took so much time to sort thru, clip out, organize... TIME = $$. I spent more time than I saved money. Not worth it to me.

The phrase that always goes through my head is only touch a paper once. Time doesn’t always permit, but that really helps me. I also scan most of my documents to my computer and have a external hard drive for backup. That works really well and definitely cuts down on paper clutter.

I just made a 'time will tell' bookmark folder on my laptop!! I always browse and save things 'for later' in various locations, but often forget I've saved them!! The 'time will tell' is a great way for me to browse these 'at a glance' and filter them from there!!

    * When you were walking the path that papers used to take in your home it was like watching myself! I can SO relate! (I am making progress though, thanks to your videos =)
    * I love your system (especially that it is simple and I don't have to buy anything fancy) with the "Time Will Tell" bin. It is the PERFECT solution for me of where to put catalogs and such.
    * I love your self discipline. You have really learned from the past.
    * I know it is very time consuming to film and edit videos. Thanks for taking the time to share what you have learned.❤
*️ I would LOVE to hear your ideas and philosophy about minimizing and simplifying RECIPES. Maybe simplifying recipes would be a good winter project for your viewers. =)
    * I'm guessing you have a day set aside to pay your bills since you file bills you are going to pay later. I would love to hear about your schedule and how you go about paying one time bills (like medical bills), balancing checking accounts, etc., if you haven't done a video on that already.

Years ago the "boss" (my wife) mandated that we clean out the home office and our 6 drawer filing cabinet. Shredded and recycled 14 33 gallon bags of paper. Found pay stubs from 1988! After the mass shred event we went paperless and online for all bill paying. We no longer have the paper problem. All mail is dealt with in the garage immediately. Recycle paper bin gets most of our "mail".

Thank you, Dawn ! Paper has always been my biggest house keeping down fall. I’m an information junkie ! A sentimental archiver ! Yes I do put an effort into purging papers and have made great strides. But I still need more help. Little paper piles still do inhabit my home, as well as files , & a few bins. Ugh ! I do get ruthless ( thank goodness). Certainly not a paper hoarder , but gotta admit it’s fair to say I’m a paper pack rat..medical records for myself , & my 2 pets ... ( kids are grown so yes I dont have theirs anymore ! ) ... articles about my beloved home town
(history, music scene, etc) to scrap book ( yepp it’s true ! It’s fascinating haha ! ). Photo albums ... yikes. I did buy your walmart metal file thing. Love it. And pretty files. I was so proud of that purchase & setting it up lol ! It’s still not fully / properly utilized tho. I think i have some sort of mental block about how to work these systems. I think a label maker would be a game changer. Gotta get soon ! Getting there ! Thanks again, Dawn ! Love you & your Family ! God bless you !
