#PharoahSanders (born Farrell Sanders, October 13, 1940) is an American #jazz saxophonist. A member of John Coltrane's groups of the mid-1960s, Sanders is known for his overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone, as well as his use of "sheets of sound". He has released over 30 albums as a leader and has collaborated extensively with Leon Thomas, Alice Coltrane and Rinai Maurice, among others. Saxophonist Ornette Coleman described him as "probably the best tenor player in the world".
Sanders' music has been called "spiritual jazz" due to his inspiration in religious concepts such as Karma and Tawhid, and his rich, meditative aesthetic. This style is seen as a continuation of Coltrane's work on albums such as A Love Supreme. As a result, Sanders is considered a disciple of Coltrane or, as Albert Ayler said, "Trane was the Father, Pharoah was the Son, I am the Holy Ghost".

Rest in Peace and Power, sir. Thank you for decades of extraordinary music! ❤
Completely agreed
Mmm
I was in the audience that night and this gives me shivers hearing this back. One of the very best live gigs I've ever attended, if not the best. Truly mind blowing music from a legend still at the very top. The music lives on, rest in power!
I saw him there in 2006/7 when he was having problems with the sound guy, he cut his set short and didn't come back on.
cool brother, cliff in tokyo
youre one lucky cookie!
I was 😉😂. His playing is absolutely out of this world and you get that hair raising feeling when see him playing. I am really sad he passed away recently. He had that rare magic like Coltrane, Dolphy and Parker in that he trancended the instrument and transmitted his spirit through it.
Also saw McCoy Tyner a number of times and he sounded so good as well.
I saw you
I wish I could tell him, and maybe I can in a way, how much his music has lifted my spirits, _so many_ times. May he and it be a blessing on and on...
So when are we going to start a Saint Pharoah Sanders church?
@@michaelbarskile6826 Hey, if Coltrane got his, Pharoah also deserves one ;)
Saw him in Atlanta, years back, and meant him at the jam session afterwards. He told me "Enjoyed your playin" what a day that was!
I first saw Pharaoh Sanders when I was a college freshman in the '60's. His creative energy was a driving force.
RIP Mr Sanders. A true giant of the art of sound.
There is just something indescribable about Sander's playing. It reaches the depths of the soul like nothing else.
Agreed. He has the magic like Dolphy, Coltrane and Parker before him
Rest in peace to this absolute Legend.
Great musician
Wow rip truly
@@renatorossi1800 truly
It's nice to see a man age in grace while enjoying it.He's embraced in the music.Trane Lives!!!
Pharoah..yeah
He does indeed. He is mind blowing live!
Genius. I've been listening to his music for almost forty years now.
Me too!
Fifty Four. The Power of God.
@@FordGreeneLawyer53 here, the Creator Has A Masterplan...my introduction
I saw him there twice when i lived in London at Jazz Cafe and walked calmly past me and a friend as coming into the place. My jaw dropped and his music was indeed that amazing feeling you get from the good Coltrane stuff. The squeeling sounds amazing live and when he does the trick of making sounds come from the saxophone when he takes it away from his mouth is something spirtual
Bheki Mseleku is the one who composed Nozipho and Thembi when he was playing piano there at Pharoah Sanders. REST in Power, I hope that Bheki , John and Alice Coltrane received you well that side
Wow! Is so?..Bheki was a music genius Legendary.🖤❤
@@sphasokhabase2375 I don't really get what they mean lol
@@sphasokhabase2375 nice pfp btw, many colors
He was a legendary musician and an honorable man may he rest in heavenly peace 🕊
Wow...what a band and what a master! RIP Pharoah.
Since the 70s I couldn't help but notice this wonderful quality in the music of Pharoah Sanders. The genius and energy come through a clear channel.
When i hear the word jazz, the name Sanders come to mind, there is difference between listening and feelings the músic.
he makes you feel the music deep in your soul.....playing chords on a sax is still amazing to me...I LOVE MUSIC
Vere Anthony *notes
@@silmarillion1780 multiphonics are chords, sanders definitely does those
I've wanted this piece on vinyl for so long.
I,ve been, hearing this brother every since the 60's and all that I have to say,,,he has'snt missed a beat. He just left Washington , DC a few weeks, and he he's ageing great and playing strong...
Agin " I say Pharaoh has attained the tone / harmonic /mechanics and mastery of the instrument that I pray to play...Nobody can touch him" 50 years ago I got Jazz Love ,with Wardell Grey, Lester ,Paul Quinishae, Trane, Miles, Dexter, Gene Ammons, Nobody can touch Pharaoh.
@@carlbogus4497 Have you listened to James Carter? He's not as original in terms of musicality as Pharoah, but he seems to be able to coax any sound out of any sax, from bass to soprano. (I'm no expert on sax or jazz, but a huge fan of both, so I'd be interested to hear your opinion.)
This man music carried me through my darkest days.Body to the dirt spirit to heaven.
The drumming at 22:00 is simply incredible. Damn do I love this concert. Pharoah is The King of this music IMO and has been since the late 60's. I love him to death.
You are not joking! That drum solo may be the most amazing thing I've ever heard ... cheers mate! 🥂
Immensely powerful, beautiful, and joyous music. R.I.P. Pharoah.
J'adore . NORBERT .
EVERYTIME- I hear the passion-fused sounds of Pharoah Sanders blowing his horn with his fellow players. I feel EXCITING BABY 🎉❤
SPIRITUAL GREETINGS-to you and William Henderson ❤️ on piano 🎹 , miss you both dearly ❤️ 😢 💙 💖 ♥️ 😘
A brilliant show and recording, rest in heavenly peace Pharoah Sanders. Sending love & healing to the family.
Round "65 one of friends played a cut featuring Leon Thomas yodeling, he was all fatuous with the vocals, however I was smitten by the Tenor sax, Pharoah Sanders, et al. saw him at many NYC venues, purchased a tenor, hired a teacher, than came to my senses! Thank you Pharoah!
Listened to this many times, really makes me smile. Rest in peace
I've been to London 3 times. This session makes me wish I had been there 4 times.
Rest In peace to this great artist. But his voice will be celebrated forever.
50年前のファラオはニューjazzで在ったが今ではjazzカフェで聴かれている,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,。時代の変遷を彼の素直な音質に同着する私。ジャズは常にNOWで在る。
Truly amazing at 71 years of age!! - Nice tight band!!!
After moving to Oakland 20 years ago I stumbled on the Sunday Jazz gigs and followed Pharoah Sanders around. We had a few good talks. And he figures importantly in one of my favorite memories of that time.
Miss Leon Thomas -- what a voice, what a voice...
This was so beautiful and magical!
A true mujician genius and giant heart. Long may he continue to pour his love out to us on this earth.
Wow, this brother can BLOW, May the creator keep him strong....
Loving the audience, beautiful vibes. Thank you Pharoah, futuristic sounds as always
RIP the all time legend
GOT TO HAVE FREEDOM !!!!!!!
Totally transcendental!
The pharaoh is definitely one of the greats from Coltrane gang I started to take in his vibration from age of 9 that was 52years ago wonderful
Drummer Antoine Bonefield (sp) is sublime.
He was such an amazing talent with a brilliant compositional mind. His original tunes are indeed something to listen to. I find myself spellbound when I watch and listen.
Five years ago this performance sounds as fantastic as his older music . Pharoah continues to amaze me !!!!! Lucky , i have most of music of 60's & up !!
WYMM?
Pls is there a live video recording for Spiritual Blessing?
The one work that stays with me and ever has since my first 'absorbing' it when I was barely 19 yeas of age, then-living in Washington, D.C. is his piece titled 'Astral Traveling' from the work titled Thembi. What an ambience, a space, a time, ay a classic!
Little history pharaoh move from Arkansas in the sixties to Oakland,ca he played with a group called the untouchables with Sir Ed kelly on the piano. Later on pharaoh hooked up with the Trane movement... I played with pharaoh around Oakland over the years. Strong will
LOVE IS EVERYWHERE.

Gloria eterna para Pharaoh Sanders, un gran legado para música mundial!

So filled with love ,spirituality and peace "out of this world" thank-you for this message!
7:41-8:28 is so beautiful. Sounds like he's interpreting the ending of Coltrane's Central Park West.
Sounds like Coltrane's tune after the rain

"The Creator Has a Master Plan" has an extended intro that begins at 41:05 : D love this version!!
Great show.
Beyond sublime. As soon as I finish this astonishingly gorgeous version of "Nozipho" (at about 54:40), I have to go back and hear it again (and that's with the pure adrenaline shot of "You've Got to Have Freedom" to immediately follow.) I am in a permanent loop with it now. Thank you, Mr. Sanders and co.

Um dos poucos que fazem juiz à influência de John Coltrane. Muito bom.
Just came across Pharaoh Sanders, via some Ramsey Lewis, his 1977 peice You've got to have Freedom is something else.
Aint no religous man but "the creator has a masterplan" is beautiful.
Music is true religion, oneness with the Creator.
Another jazz giant, play in Heaven today and forever.
