- Today I want to share with you a Method of starting seeds that will change your life! I have been growing my own plants from seed for 10 years now, and throughout those years I have refined my process to make it simple, fun, and effective. If you want to get the most out of your garden starting your own seeds is the best place to start, and today I will show you how to do that.

I find it much easier to just throw the seeds into a jar with a small amount of water and a loose fitted lid, laid on its side for a few days to start the germination process. Once the seeds sprout and you can see roots and the first leaves starting, just gently take them one by one and transplant into pots. This way every plant you plant is a guaranteed germination and no wasting time and watering on stuff that doesnt germinate and no thinning later.
... and no thinning later. Thanks. I've been planting my seeds in a row to solve the thinning problem. Your method goes much further in that you plant only guaranteed successes. Thanks from Johannesburg.
if you add some oxygen peroxyde in the water during the first step of germination you will speed up the process and be able to transplant into pots earlier .

I truly love his enthusiasm, which is just a bonus to the knowledge he displays. I found that, for me, his fast pace explanations are much easier to 'digest' if I choose 75% playback speed instead of the 100%. I guess, for a southern slow-talker, I needed to do that. LOL

Tuck will forever have my heart. He looks exactly like my Mackey dog. Gone, will never be forgotten. He was with me for 15 years. Marriages, divorces , death, extreme health, everything! I so hope heaven has our babies there for us and they can talk. I would not have survived those 15 years without my Road Dog. Tuck blesses my soul. A healing balm to the emotions. I love your gardening, and use your advice but Tuck adds another level. He’s a good little man.
I like starting seeds in coco peat. It keeps water quite long without being damp, totally recommend it!
I've been watching this guy for years. Finally got a house with a yard this year and planted some vegetables. Ate my first cucumber 🥒 from my garden yesterday. It was delicious and worth the effort ;). Waiting for the watermelon 🍉, cantaloupe, tomatoes, eggplants 🍆 and other vegetables to get bigger.

I like seeing people put practices into effect that have been being used for literally thousands of years.
My dad insists that after planting the seeds, the potting mix needs to be pressed to have good contact. I found that seeds did better when this wasn't done. Good thing I found your video in which you explain why this is, because he is really stubborn sometimes. ;)
The most important message I have to add :
This guy is passionate at his gardening. But you can do things simpler and not as optimized and it will still work. If u never grew a plant from seeds just do it!
For Kids and Beginners that want to try to start from seeds i recommend sun flowers or beans. Both is a very easy and is a fast germer/grower.

Your videos make me feel happy. I love watching your little dog eat vegetables. I watch the news, get depressed. Then watch james and tuck run around the food garden to cancel out the neg vibes. I guess you were the biggest influence for me to start my fruit trees and start our vegetable garden. My business is with a lot of NFL teams but I could care less about sports. I would be much more excited to meet James and Tuck.
Best video on the subject I have ever seen! The only thing I do differently ..is that I loosely over fill the plug trays which are in a larger tray to catch the overfill... I quickly level them off with a wide plastic trowel typically used for drywall. Then I give the tray one quick drop which gives me about 3/8th's of an inch to drop the seed which I then lightly cover with soil again and level off again. Works well and is quick.
Pretty much what I do also. His method is so slow!
Tuck has the demeanor of a doggy that is very confident in the knowing he is utterly loved. I wish all dogs in the world could feel like that.

Your video just popped up first here, so I watched it, and this was great! I've been growing my own, gardening for nearly 50 years. I started as a teenager, digging a new flower and veggie garden for my Mom. Once I reached 20 I got into studying, big time, about horticulture... whatever books, etc I was able to get my hands on. I really commend you on doing a fabulous job, getting as many details as possible about seed starting into a short video ! People who are just beginning to grow from scratch really need to know these details, as it saves a LOT of trial and error, money, and heartache.... having done all the prep, planting, and everything that goes into it...only to have their hopes of something beautiful happen as the result of all they put into it, as I had experienced many, many times when starting out. So, again: GREAT JOB !!
You are so right about timing. I was always starting butternut squash and cucumbers inside first, only to have them struggle once planted. For those I just direct seed after last frost and they grow so fast, no hardening off, no stress.

Tuck is a sweet little gardener.
I ALWAYS sift any mix purchased from store. Just as you said, there's sticks in it and I've also found small rocks and bits of black plastic and chopped up container tags. Producers sift their products but stuff still gets through. Gunk like that will prevent seed germination, just like you said. I take out the debris and like you I use the sifted sticks around my plants as mulch. Sometimes I use it on the bottom of pots for drainage. You've learned a lot during your last ten years of seed starting. I'm so happy you're sharing your knowledge.

Ahhh that Tuck! A dog right after my heart! I can't get enough of watching him chomp down on that raw kale. He is a smart puppy. One of my dogs is like that, too. He knows the difference between ripe and green. He inspects the cherry tomatoes all season long and only picks red ones to eat. Same with the raspberries, he is just incredible! Dogs do love fruits and veggies. Just like I do! Thanks to you, for sharing your enthusiasm and wisdom!

I grew up in NJ with a farmer father from "the old country." We planted on Mother's Day weekend. When I moved to RI, planting in the ground was closer to Memorial weekend.

In my experience, the less time a plant stays in the trays, the less chance I have to kill them. This works great, thank you for the tips and great to see Tuck munching away.

I would love to watch a video of you telling your story. I'm always fascinated to hear how gardeners got into growing food, especially, those who have an amazing food forest like yours.
I find that growing crops is easier provided that your beds are built and prepped. This year I spent alot of my time building my beds, getting soil, ect but I cant wait for next year when everything is ready to go

@@Susileedean The broccoli and cabbage family. Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, mustard greens, bok choy, turnips, rutabaga, kohlrabi and Napa cabbage, aka crucifers.
Thank you so much for explaining everything so carefully. You have made everything so plain that I think I'll be able to do it right this year. I am a 60-year-old disabled veteran that is learning that I better learn how to garden quickly so that we can grow our own food. I feel like it's a huge responsibility and that having a garden is a lot like having a baby it requires a lot of attention and care. I started gardening at about 5 yrs of age & have always found joy in the whole process.
It's a great lesson for *all* children to witness the miracle of a seed turning into food.
Now I'm a disabled pensioner & live in a tiny apartment. I usually start a container garden on my balcony in late spring.
But this year I tried gardening indoors in the dead of winter with a couple of grow lights. I feel as you do about a responsibility to grow food with all that's going on.
Well, it worked! I have more food than I can eat or store. So I'm sharing with the other pensioner neighbours!

Just remember plants know how to grow and once established really shouldn’t be that much work except for enjoying your harvest. Stay observant to catch Insect issues, water problems either to much or or not enough and those pesky little critters that can reek havoc. Yes gardening is work but should be enjoyable work sometimes we gotta remind ourselves that. Thanks for your service cheers

Hi Moni, I am 61 and also a retired veteran and also only started really gardening this season. I learn something from this young man every time I watch him and I love his style. Always upbeat and gets to the point.
My dad did that with a framed peice of porch screening when I was a kid👍 I always remember that and do it myself..saves me lots of money on seed potting mix.
I live in an apartment on the 23td floor, but this was so interesting. You’re a great teacher. Younger minds need to hear you. They will absorb your knowledge like a sponge.

Just started watching your videos recently because the idea of home grown food is causing a sense of purpose to well up in me that I haven't felt before. I love seeing the energy that you and Tuck bring, especially in how you don't let failures get you down. Makes me feel like I can do this too, as I have long struggled with anxiety and trying new things has been something of a sore topic . I live in Michigan and don't have the ideal setup for starting indoors, but this video has given me some ideas on how I can work around it. Thank you!
it's so hard to get started sometimes- but you're right, the failures in gardening are the most important part. How else would we learn? It's easy for me to get discouraged when something fails in the garden, and then I won't realize that I learned new techniques until the next spring when I know what not to do. :)
I always think « there are no fails in gardening, but I do create some costly compost! » haha. In the sense that if anything dies or doesn’t produce well, it’s composted and used to « upgrade » my soil.

For sifting, I also use the plastic "trays" that you get when buying small starters - when the bottom is like a screen/lattice and its lighter to use for us "oldies" ! Thank you for your enthusiasm and wonderful videos :)

Plastic bulb crate works even better/faster than a flat, as it's deeper, can hold more, & you can sift more quickly without spilling.

So true what you said about the "right time" for plants to be ready to grow. I always start too early and the plants just sit there UNTIL THE TIME IS RIGHT and then, and only then, do they explode.

I've been starting seeds and growing my own plants in my garden for almost 10 years now and I cannot believe how much new information I'm getting from this gentleman. I live in South Central Minnesota (zone 4b) And I found all of his information about tomato starting absolutely brilliant. We must have a similar growing zones. I always start my plants too early. I am so ready for spring that I feel like an almost will warmer weather is by starting my plants indoors... And I almost always regret it because they get long and spindly And absolutely ridiculous to try to maneuver. I will definitely be trying this method with my tomatoes this year... Starting late April and transplanting mid-may. 1000 thank yous!

Just found this by accident. Planted an unsuccessful garden last year. I did just about everything he suggested not to do. Was ready to give up. After watching this I will try one more time this year with these tips as a guide.
I moved to Florida in April so I lost track of you. You are still great, and your knowledge just keeps getting stronger. Still loving you, your style and especially your enthusiasm. Trying my hand at a small garden in a few weeks, Z9A is much different than NY Zone 5B! A few toms, squash, cucs and some herbs. I havevto keep some time and space for my flowers. Sunshine here is a welcome change and the long growing season has my heart. I do see shade cloth is in my future. I'm hoping for the best.

To: The Gardening Channel with James & Tuck. Yep, I really commented on previous videos from last year. I'm an Urban Gardener from Milwaukee, so we can, have some weather in common. I start with seeds. I really enjoy your channel. My daughter has a busy Yorky...kinda like Tuck. I have always had Labs & Golden retrievers. Had a beagle for 17 yrs..drove us nuts with running off for days at a time. But always made it back home.These two breeds never ran off. They loved our huge back yard. Never messed with my raised beds,pots,urns nor my in ground beds. I have had dogs since I was in collage at Marquette University, age 19..so love little Tuck and learning new things from you. Gave my daughter your channel too. You are like a teacher very clear. I know cause I taught 11th grade English for MPS...from graduation in 1970 to retirement in 2018..48yrs. My daughter was 47 April 9..so I know she has shared your channel with her friends.She is a flower person. I do more veggies but have a significant flower garden also.

I've used the same system for growing tomatoes, as your old system. I'll try your recommendations of starting them later, it makes a lot of sense. I've lifed on the Westcoast for 52 years. I just moved to the Eastcoast and live in gardening Zone 5.
I needed to hear the last part about the timing of your tomato seedlings. That was really helpful. I've struggled with leggy tomato starts in the past and I also noticed that they don't do much in the ground when I plant them early. Your way of doing it takes out the stress of it.
