October 8, 2023 - With all out war raging horribly in the Middle East I pray people find there way to this song. it says what I can't say very well. Let all of us light one candle and raise our collective voices for universal human rights, justice and peace in Palestine, Israel and love beyond borders. Shalom
That's awesome. That video has been a holiday season tradition in our family every year since it came out. We finally had to find it on DVD because we wore out the original VHS tape we got from PBS. It's always playing as we decorate the tree and the rest of the house for the holidays.
Wow!!! Me and my mom have the DVD re release of it and we love it. I have a question about Peter Paul and Mary what were they like? Were they friendly nice? They're my favorite Folk music group from the 60s so I'm just curious what are they like in real life.
About 1988 or so, Peter, Paul and Mary were coming to the San Francisco Bay Area to perform a live outdoor concert where everyone would be watching/listening/singing along on a hillside. I was wishing there was some way to be able to attend. But tickets were sold out! And we couldn't afford to buy them even if they weren't. The very next morning, my radio alarm went off. A few minutes later , the DJ announced that caller #9 would win the grand prize- tickets to the PPM live concert! I WON! My husband and I were able to attend. We had only gas money, but that was one of the most amazing and memorable experiences either of us has ever had! They were outstanding- and we were near the stage. After the concert, the trio welcomed us and many others to come up and meet them. Very genuine, lovely people! I miss them terribly.
they were just incredible people who just happened to be musical geniuses, nobody nowadays can compete with their messages of hope for all of humanity!
2020: Our leaders have abandoned us. Leaving us to crawl in the dirt and mud... But we will rise up, for we are not afraid. We hold the ember of truth in our hearts. Happy holidays, everybody... Don't let the light go out!
I went to a Holocaust commemoration at a temple many years ago and they had a table covered with glass votives, each bearing the name of a Jewish child who died, and everyone held one of the candles while this song was played. I will never forget it.
I am so grateful to have learned this song in elementary school, I had a wonderful music teacher. I love this message, and can't wait to teach my students this song.
Omg!! How absolutely beautiful this is.Weren’t we lucky to be young when Peter, Paul and Mary were entertaining us all! They were amazing… always my favorite!! Xox

Their children’s’ concerts, as well as John Denver’s in the early 90s, as an extremely introverted person, was what opened my world to music and therefore communication. I am forever grateful for them sharing their gift. I have always been enthralled by them and yes, for many years played music as well. Now I teach kids how to read, but could not do it without having had the confidence and dedication to practice music first.
@@davidanthonystone5165 I recall when I was six years old, listening to Puff the Magic Dragon on my grandfather's analogue AM radio. I listened, curiously, at how Jacky Paper could love a dragon with a fearless roar, and wondered just how those green scales fell like rain.
Treasured memories of this February 1988 concert at Lehman College in the Bronx. Attended both the afternoon and evening performances. Later on, I bought the companion Gold Castle record when PP&M promoted it on the Regis and Kathy Lee program. Thanks Rudi for this outstanding, top shelf production.
I find it wonderful that all three of them rallied behind this song, though only one of the three was born Jewish... to come together around a tradition that only one of the three were born into, and all three share it and believe in it... this is what life is about! This is the real thing! Let's all come together! And to all those who are having a hard time in America, who have suffered the last 7 years, remember that in the first Hanukkuh after the crisis had passed the light came back stronger than ever and still shines to this day! God bless you from a Christian and religious universalist who knows well the historical context of the first Hahukkah and wishes love to all!
I love this Chanukah song so much! My children learned it in lower school as part of their holiday concert and I learned it, too. Every year I find it and replay over and over the beautiful melody with the powerful message of hope. My children are grown with children of their own and I’m still finding this song to be as meaningful now as ever. We all need a little hope. No, we need a lot of it. Let’s all keep singing, keep hopeful and keep on keeping on.💕
I first heard this song when it first came out, the cantor at another synagogue sang it when i was 8. i asked mine about it, she hadn't heard it yet and didnt know whay i was talking about. I just in last couple years looked it back up and found it. This song has never left my heart, i think about it every Chanukah
Thank you for posting this! It's so full of love, warmth and light! I'm especially grateful to find this, because it seems this year is the first year we can't find the entire album in one place on either youtube or spotify. ???? I wonder what happened. I greatly miss being able to hear the entire album, but am even more appreciative of each song we can still hear.
Beautiful, but for reasons of safety, the lighted candle should always remain upright while the unlighted candle is tipped toward the flame. That's what we do in our Christmas Eve worship services using smaller candles with cuffs to catch dripping wax. Wonderful song.
You had a great music teacher! Another reason to ensure music education for all. The memories. The weirdness of trying to get 25-40 children to sing and learn many times per day! And yet, it works! I remember the travails of my elementary school music teacher. How hard she worked. How much she struggled to ensure we learned an "American" songbook that transcended and incorporated so many cultures. I wish I could hug her right now! Though I admit to sometimes being too cool to sing with enthusiasm and I regret those "nasty kid" moments. But when you are twelve, pleasing the teacher is far less important than pleasing the "cool kids". I confess to my lapses and hope that somewhere in the special heaven for Music Teachers, mine is blasting away at the upright piano and demanding we all sing out strong and seriously on "Sweet Betsey from Pike" or "Go Tell Aunt Rhody" or yes, "Blowin' in the Wind".

It takes two "peacemakers" to make peace. One side has always been ready, but its overtures, no matter how generous, have always been met with hatred and murder. So the vision of this song isn't very realistic, but that doesn't make it any less beautiful and moving. Here's the meaning I'll take from it: let's work to make sure, to paraphrase Alan Paton, that when they have turned to loving we will not have turned to hating. God, Peter Paul and Mary were great. Hearing them moves me as if I were still 15 years old. And lefties that they were, the power and beauty of their music reminds me of Andrew Fletcher's wisdom: "Let me make the songs of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws."
