Still one of my all-time Bowie favorites. And I don’t know why.

A very brave analysis sir. It doesn't get much tougher than this, so bravo for submitting your well thought out interpretation.

I have listened to this song for nearly fifty years and I still don’t have a clue as to what it is about.

This song was written for David's half-brother who was mentally ill and ended his life after escaping from the hospital he was in. David had loved his brother and admired his orginality and style which he emulated in his on show in the early years. These words here from the song shows how he cried upon hearing about his passing, the finality of death and saluting his spirit in the afterlife.
And now the dress is hung, the ticket pawned
The factor max that proved the fact is melted down
Woven on the edging of my pillow
And my brother lays upon the rocks
He could be dead, he could be not, he could be you
He's chameleon, comedian, Corinthian and caricature
Shooting up pie in the sky
      Bewlay brothers.
David only performed this song live two or three times in his life. It hurt too much to sing.

I know a music producer, he told me who the bewlay brothers were, although I wasn't expecting to get the answer.

Very perceptive take on this enigmatic song. Someone once said to lou reid "of course, bowie stole from you," and lou reid said "Fuck you. This guy wrote 'The Bewley Brothers.'"
