Electrolyte panel is a type of blood test. Through this, the amount of electrolytes and carbon dioxide in the blood is measured. Electrolytes are minerals like sodium and potassium found in the body. These become in the form of bicarbonate in the blood. Therefore this test is sometimes also called bicarbonate test.
With this test, electrolytes like sodium, chlorine, potassium and carbon dioxide are measured in our body. The cells of our body balance the amount of fluids and electrolytes in the body. These liquids and electrolytes are electrically charged minerals. Electrolytes move fluid in and out of our body. That liquid works to deliver nutrients to the cells and remove waste and unnecessary substances from the body.
Electrolytes keep the water level in our body normal and the pH level stable. In other words, electrolytes keep the amount of acid and base balanced in our body. Electrolytes are in the form of salts in our blood and tissues. You get electrolytes from food and beverages.
This test is done if you are confused, nauseous or feel weak. There are some symptoms which are indicative of deterioration in the electrolyte balance in the body. If you go to the hospital, your doctor may use an electrolyte panel to check for electrolyte problems. Sometimes even before treating other problems, your doctor may advise you to get this test done. For example, heart failure can also occur due to electrolyte imbalance. That is why it can be advised to get this test done even in case of heart failure.
You may also be advised to get this test done if you have diarrhea, vomiting, diabetes, heart disease, nerve damage, any kind of muscle problem, chronic kidney disease. Apart from this, your electrolyte test is done if you use diuretics or other medicines which make you urinate excessively. If you have suffered from any heat-related illness or have suffered an injury due to a collision while playing, then your doctor may advise you to get this test done.
