  • Meet Sally Forrest. After 18 years in senior management positions in the UK, she moved to Singapore where she has lived for almost 20 years. We discussed why Sally has never applied for citizenship, the difficulties of settling down in Asia, and why Feng Shui is so big in Singapore. Enjoy!

@@MaxChernov yes I am all for those Ang mos who assimilate with the locals like the (Australian?) who lived in KL and spoke Malay. But I am against freeloaders like what's her face here who takes full advantage of the local males (who had compulsory NS) to defend her assets yet refuse to commit to the country and keep to her expat bubble. I bet she spoke 0 Mandarin and goes around berating the uncles and aunties for not speaking Queens English. What a hypocrite! 😡😡😡 If I were ICA I would remove her PR once she hit 65. There are so many people in this world waking up and grinding in the daily 9 to 5 struggling to pay bills and have 3 meals a day and little room for leisure and entertainment. There are people suffering from illnesses , cancer, getting killed in wars and diseases. Waking up is more of a curse than a blessing. I’ve just returned from Singapore after staying over for a week. My strongest impressions were: clean, organised, respectful, SAFE.
Fabulous tropical plants which I so enjoyed. I struggled with the humid heat and was unsure about the food - so much choice but, as I am not used to Asian cuisine I found much of it strange (I just had to look for things I recognised!). The MRT system is impressive and seems to run like clockwork (and I liked the musical announcements!). Congratulations Singapore, you’re doing great (and I kind of miss you!) ❤

It's funny that she said singapore could be the example for other countries to follow in terms of how to run a country.. because that is exactly what i was thinking as well... And she also said that she loves living in singapore because she is an organized person so she feels like singapore compliments her personality.. i also think that way... If i were to be a country, i think the closest country matches my personality would be Singapore.. because i like to be organized and efficient and i like to have the freedom to walk alone wherever, whenever without needing to fear for my life... And Singapore can provide that for me.. and don't forget about the diversity of the food.. i am a foodie and i love the diverse food that singapore has... The only thing that i need to consider is the hot humid weather, because when it's hot, i cannot be out in the sun for so long.. but overall i love Singapore ❤

காசிவிஸ்வநாதன் “கா [/கே]” சண்முகம் - then the world’s highest paid foreign affairs minister - mentioned in New York City (NY) that Singapore is “a city, not a country”.

I agree with Sally about the efficiency here. I walked into Tampines Polyclinic at 8:21 am to register to consult a doctor. Got to see the doctor at 8:41am and collected my medicine by 8:57am (actually I missed my turn in the queue at the pharmacy because I was engrossed in my reading). 15 years ago, it would have taken three to four hours. This is much faster than visiting a private clinic. As a Singaporean, I pay a few dollars for consultation and medication.

I originated East and domiciled in UK for 4 decades and retiring next year. I'm looking for opportunities in Singapore and actually got working permit last year. Teaching perfect English is one area. Suffice to say, I watch BBC to 1 hour Channel 4 news, Newsnigjt and read Guardian, Times and watch hundreds of documentaries including PBS America, France TV, nhk Japan etc. Hence, I have global perspective of the world.
I live in the posh part of UK where cars stops for pedestrians to cross and we greet strangers in the parks. Perhaps, I can also create exclusive holidays in UK.
Coming to Singapore again this September.

Watching her experience reminded me of an Indonesian helper who threw away a big black trash bag I left on the floor. It contained things like audio and video accessories which I meant to sort out. Next I had this brand new Black and Decker workbench cum toolbox which I left it opened. It has an wooden top supported by a plastic lever. She went to slam it close without asking me and broke the plastic lever. A lack of communications.

In his memoir, the late PM Lee Kuan Yew visited Britain and he saw those coin-operated boxes with newspaper in them (aka newsrack). The British would pay for it and took one copy of newspaper from those boxes. He was so impressed with their civility and honesty that he said that this is the mark of a CIVILIZATION. Fast forward many years forward, Britain is in decline and in a sad state. It is said that the sun will never set on the British Empire but it did. Just look at the politics and you will know what I meant.

Singapore is a work in progress. Lee Kuan Yew set the tone. It is up to the current generation of Singaporeans to continue to make this country work, and work for people who have talent, regardless of where they come from, and to continue to provide opportunities for the less privileged in our midst. I think as long as Singaporeans and our new immigrants have a good understanding of our unique social compact, Singapore will continue to work for the next few decades.
