- In this video, I talk about HIFU treatments going wrong, what to look out for, and how to make sure you choose the right practitioner. This video follows on from the MOST popular blog on my website 'HIFU Treatments Gone Wrong', which has had a staggering number of views. Following on from that blog, I've had so many people contact me, that have had a less than favourable experience of what is, when done correctly, an incredible treatment!
HIFU really is an amazing anti ageing treatment, and is classed as a 'non surgical face lift' treatment. Carried out correctly, the results can be tighter, firmer, more lifted skin - which is why it's so popular.
I'm a HUGE fan of HIFU, and use the Focus Dual system in my clinic, in Alton Hampshire. I talk a little about the benefits of it's safety features in this video.

Thank you, you're welcome. It is a great treatment, but for the right clients. Sadly, I've seen too many cases where treatments have been carried out on people that (in my opinion), were not suitable for treatment, leaving them with undesirable results.

To be honest, I turn away over half the people that contact me about HIFU, as they aren’t suitable for treatment. But for the right clients, it’s great. RFM is also fab with the FD. Lynton are brilliant with their support and the guidance on safe parameters is invaluable. Thanks for the comment. There's never a 'one size fits all' with treatments, so I avoid making specific recommendations. There are so many factors to consider when considering skin treatments because the skin is the largest organ of the body, and it's complex and unique to everyone. The best approach is to seek guidance from a practitioner who can advise you in all areas that impact your skin, not just treatments and products. A question: Im 45 - turning 46 later this year and I would love to try out HIFU on my lower parts of the face - like around my mouth area cause Im starting to see some lines there and to tighten my jawline. However I have rheumatoid arthritis and some say (not everyone) that you cant do HIFU when you have an autoimmune illness? Is that true and if so, why??
And is there anything else I can do in that case, cause I really dont like what Im seeing around my mouth area LOL
Also, I do have some dark spots/pigmentation - can that be an issue with HIFU??

Hello, can u help me. I did hifu on jawline and on the 3rd day i got symptom if difficulty in swallowing. And on the 11th day i got tmj dysfunction that caused my jawlock. Can u explain how i got these from hifu. I dont have issues with my teeth and i didnt get hit by a ball or whatever

Hi Nikki, If you have hifu only done on the chin and jowl area to snatch the neck and jawline will the hifu go to other areas? Or does it only goto the areas you target? Also how often or how many sessions are required for neck/jowl results? And how long do results last? Thanks
I often see the phrase 'snatch' when practitioners talk about skin tightening and lifting treatments. The treatment outcomes really depend on the delivery of the HIFU; some machines are less targeted than others, heating up the surface of the skin and surrounding tissue. Other systems have safety systems targeting certain depths and areas, bypassing the upper layers. Many factors impact your treatment, including the depth of treatment and energy used. The number of initial treatments varies, and maintenance is typically every 12-18 months, as a rough guideline. Please speak with an experienced practitioner who can assess your needs and suitability for treatment. HIFU has become very popular and is, unfortunately, offered to many unsuitable candidates who are left with significant volume loss in areas essential to our facial structure. Once this volume is lost, it cannot be restimulated naturally. Best wishes, Nikki
Had HIFU done 5 months ago & I absolutely loved the results achieved. You’re however correct in emphasizing that people contemplating this, should be open about pain & any high discomfort they may be experiencing during the course of the HIFU procedure & also, be absolutely sure, you have a Board Certified Dermatologist/Plastic Surgeon doing this treatment on you. This is NOT the time to be “penny pinching.” Do it, when you are financially in a good position to afford the best in their chosen field of expertise!
How painful is it? I'm getting nervous I'm booked in for it !😮
@@kitkat7491 ……I was exactly like you before my HIFU treatment, bracing for the worst but, in actuality, it was really not all that bad. Yes! There were some areas of my face that felt the zing more then other regions but overall, I found it acceptable & bearable. Don’t go in all hyped up & fearful & expecting the worst. Take a deep breath & tell yourself, “this treatment will be way way better, then going under the knife! Though results of course, with HIFU, will never be similar to a Deep Plane Facelift but hey, you’re spared the long torturous recovery phase! If you’re confident in your HIFU Practitioner & have done the relevant check on his/her qualifications & experience, then I’ll say “relax & think about how rested you’ll look in about 5 months, instead of focusing on the negatives.” That’s what I did. Have a great day & let me know how it all went, once you’re done with your procedure 😊
It’s tolerable. I do every 1.5 years and the results are amazing! My top 3 treatments: Ultraformer (or HIFU - I don’t do the one that removes fat), biostimulator (Radiesse or Sculptra) and microneedling.

Hi Helder, thanks for your comment - I've glad you found my video helpful. To be honest, not everyone is suitable for HIFU - and radiofrequency microneedling can be a better option, if you have a slim face and you're early 40's. It will really depend on what your skin concerns are, and what you're goals are. A good practitioner should always be able to assess and advise you on the best treatment programme for you. I'll pop a link below, to a blog I have written on skin ageing, as you might find that interesting - it's not just our skin that contributes to the ageing we see!
And yes, I am based in the UK - I'm in Alton, Hampshire - which is on the Hampshire/Surrey border. I'm about an 1hr 10 minutes from London Waterloo, on a direct train line - to give you some idea.

i recently trained in this and due to all the bad reviews and people coming out with issues its made me scared to use it .. but i know to keep to instrictions of correct levels for the right arsas. and heat and i wont over do it for the individual but im also paranoid incase my equipnent doesnt work as i brought a cheaper branded one. i think im just over thinkintg things as i eant to do a good job 😅

Hi. I am unfamiliar with that particular system, but I believe it is HIFU? I can't comment on their parameters or treatment protocols. I am based in Alton, Hampshire. Thank for your video & your help, it's been a week now & i still feel as if i was punched in the face, when i press with my fingers on the cheek bone and above the jawline & a bit on the neck, i don't feel any pain when i don't touch my face and of course it's a lot better than the first day ( where i felt i couldn't move my muscles easily for two hours and felt strong numbness but then it became just swelling) so is all that normal , but the practitioner did it hard on my face that it feels like punches or i should worry?
Hi. Please contact your practitioner to discuss this. This would not be normal for my system, but there are many different systems on the market, and some provide a more uncomfortable treatment experience than others. They did HIFU in my eyebrows and affected my eyelids in a way that first I got bruises around the area them scars , the practitioner told me it was going to disappear in a week and then it did but then I start to notice fat loss in my eyelid and that my eye started to drop and looks weird , the practitioner told me it wasn’t possible and its being 2 years since that happened my eyelids never recover and I can notice the fat loss difference and I’m young only 27 years old and my eyelids especially the left one is my new insecurity. I tried to book appointments with other doctor but they told me the only option was Botox or something like surgery to lift my eye , but the truth is that my eye look dropped for the fat loss. I tried taking collagen powder , retinol peptides, red light but nothing change.
I'm sorry to hear that you have had this experience. Unfortunately, it's not possible to restimulate fat cells that have been broken down and destroyed. As a practitioner it’s paramount to give clients an education on HIFU after care and what to expect: I don’t offer any treatments I haven’t undergone myself. Take advantage of your consultation if the practitioner isn’t fully informative and seems in a hurry to treat above and beyond your health and safety steer clear! Many of us do things by the book so please be careful out there x

Thanks for the informational video. I have fat eye bags (genetically) and Im 28 years old. Would you recommend hifu? Im not a canditate for surgery
HIFU can help with the appearance of bags under the eyes, although it will really depend on what's causing them in the first place. There are specific machines that are more suitable for this. Microneedling, filler and other collagen induction treatments can also help, but in conjunction with a review of health, lifestyle and nutrition (genetics also may play a part). Otherwise you could be treating the eye bags, but not addressing the root cause - which means they will likely return, or you'll have limited results from treatment. I hope that helps, Nikki

Hi, I had Hifu RF done last Friday at my dermatologists office but done by someone who works there, not the dermatologist himself. It was incredibly painful and hot the entire time and she told me it was better for results if I could handle the pain. I have a naturally very slim face and only wanted to have a lifting effect and they said this would help overall skin quality. Now my face is still hot and swollen 5 days later and all of the filler has melted in my face. I went back yesterday abd they said this wouldn’t happen and that no fat was dissolved. Are things going to continue to get worse? My face feels mushy and stretchy and I’m devastated.
I am sorry to hear you've had this experience. I would recommend either speaking to your practitioner, or speaking with your dermatologist. Post treatment swelling is normal, but you will need to be assessed in person so that they can give you the appropriate advice. If you aren't comfortable returning to them, then I'd recommend seeing another experienced practitioner or medical professional who has experience with the device used. I wish you all the best, Nikki

Hi please can you help me, i had hifu yesterday and today i have almost like cat scratches on my face they are red and sore the practioner said they will go she just doesnt knoe when? Is this right i go on holiday sunday and worried they wpnt go 😢
Hi. I highly recommend you go back to your practitioner and ask them to review your skin. HIFU doesn’t break the skin on the surface, the energy is targeted into the deeper layers of the skin, so I wouldn’t expect scratches on your face, unless perhaps the hand piece was pressed into the skin too hard and scratched you? The only other complication with older systems of HIFU can be surface level burns, where the surface layer of the skin has been over heated. It’s impossible to advise on what’s happened here, but cat like scratches are not something I would expect to see post HIFU. Your practitioner is the best person to advise as they will be familiar with the system they use. Or, if you are concerned you you could seek medical advice from a doctor. HIFU destroyed my face, burned all the healthy fat pads, caused scarring, and resulted in nerve damage too. It produced also other health problems that I will have for the rest of my life.
Hi Nikki, what are your thoughts on Sofwave? Does it have the same risks as other devices, can it cause fat losss? Why do you prefer Focus Dual?
Hi. I haven’t used Sofwave and there’s limited info on their technology online, so I can’t comment on this. I like the Focus Dual because of its safety feature where the upper layers of the skin are not compromised during treatment, whereas some systems heat the surface of the skin and risk burning and damage as a result. It is a specific, targeted system. Lynton are also excellent in their training and clinical support, which is crucial to me.
That said, any system can cause damage if it’s used incorrectly or treatment is carried out on clients who are not suitable candidates for these treatments. The system alone isn’t the only thing to consider, it’s client selection and assessment and choosing the right treatment parameters for the individual client. Every practitioner will have a different view, I’m sure, but my personal opinion is that HIFU is being carried out too often on clients who were not suitable. I have a worrying about of women in their 20’s and early 30’s contact me for HIFU to sculpt their faces - which is not what this technology is designed for. Slim profiles and young women with optimum collagen levels are not suitable for this kind of treatment, they are more likely to lose necessary volume in their facial structures, which can then only be restored with filler or fat transfer.
So, no system is entirely ‘safe’, because the practitioner knowledge, training and client selection is crucial. I hope that helps. Nikki
Thank you for your response. I'm 36 and mainly looking for something to improve my under eye bags, not interested in a full facial treatment at the moment. My doctor said tightening the skin would push the fat down and improve the appearance, which sounds worth trying if it can help avoid a surgical procedure. Do you use Focus Dual for similar purposes?

Some do, but please ensure you see someone with experience in treating this delicate area, you do not want to experience unwanted fat loss here, and this area is very close to the medial cheek compartment - which you do not want treated over. Can you please advise in case of HIfu at the neck area if this is bad for thyroid??? I am on a thyroid treatment and do not want to jeopardise any damage
Hi. HIFU should never be carried out over the thyroid channel, this area should be avoided during treatment. It's fine to treat the neck either side of the thyroid channel. If you are undergoing treatment, please check with your treating medical team, before starting any treatment. I, myself, have an underactive thyroid and have been on levothyroxine for decades, and have treated many clients in the same position, safely. However, as I haven't carried out an assessment/consultation with you, my advice is to speak with your medical team, just to be sure. If you are considering treatment, the clinician should carry out a consultation with you, and provide you with pre/post treatment information. Kind wishes, Nikki

Hi Nikki I have saggy skin under my chin and have a very undefined jawline (I am a normal weight and lower part of my face has always been like this “chubby and saggy looking”) would Hifi work for me. I'd recommend speaking with an experienced practitioner and having a consultation so that they can suggest the best treatment options for you. You might also find an 'at-home' microcurrent device helpful, as these help to tone the muscle, which in turn can help improve the appearance in these areas (although it doesn't treat the skin directly). What can you do for scars left after hifu
Hi Nikki! I had a HIFU session a month ago and I was just wondering if it's normal for the face to experience a bit of swelling/bloating even after a few weeks. It's been a month and I feel like my jaws and cheeks are a bit swollen/bloated a month after the HIFU treatment compared to my face before getting the treatment. Hope you can help me with this. Hi. I'd recommend going back to the practitioner who treated you and asking them to assess, or if you're not comfortable doing that, I'd suggest seeking advice from your doctor. Swelling is normal after treatment, as it's causing a minor controlled trauma to the tissue. Swelling typically lasts for up to a week, but everyone is different - your skin is the largest organ of your body and unique to you, so everyone will respond differently. I hope that helps, Nikki
Hi, I’ve had the same reaction of swelling and looking bloated in my face - it’s been over a year and it’s very distressing. The practitioner says this isn’t normal but also claimed she couldn’t see it - but everyone else can. It’s quite distressing.

For the first time in my life after having botox for the past 25 yrs i had a severe reaction swelling of eyes forehead that lasted for 3 months .. had to take steroids for 2 months to help control the swelling which in of itself is really bad for overall health as it suppresses the immune system & causes bone degradation... all of these procedures have big risks we are simply ignorant to .. Its big money ... they are not going to tell everyone for example that botox has a black box label warning ((highest adverse / danger warning) The best thing we can do for ourselves is get healthy .. Eat lots of proteins, veggies, sleep, exercise, supplements & try to love ourselves as best we can :)
So whats the option other than hifu as my mum face is already very slim n skin is so thin. She is js 45 but due to non caring oh her skin earlier days she has saggy skin on face .
I cannot make recommendations for your mum as I haven't assessed her, and there are many factors to consider when recommending treatments. And, it will come down to more than treatments alone, as lifestyle, health, nutrition, and skincare also play a significant role. For my clients where HIFU isn't suitable, radiofrequency microneedling can be an appropriate option. I'd recommend your mum speak with an experienced practitioner, as some of the RFM systems may not be suitable for her. There are many systems on the market, and they differ significantly. Hello ..although I didn't have the HiFU treatment but i heard it is like Ultheraphy...for me.. ti was not a good result.. i have a full face..so if i loss a little fat..its fine.. but the problem is that i did lose some fat..but it didn't tighten..the skin?? fortunately, it wasn't too bad..but my face look tightener and better before the treatment.. i wouldnt recommend any of these treatments ..even with the best practitioner. .. now i am doing prp and sculptra.. if your older ..i wouldn't recommend it
Thank you for your comment on Ultherapy. Every treatment comes with some risk, and not all treatments are suitable for everyone. @suzannehorton3146 I agree - I went to a very well rated practitioner in Newmarket and had HIFU and it reduced the tiny amount of fat under my chin (which wasn't an issue I was attending for anyway) and has left the skin more saggy than before. Whats PRP and Sculptra and are they working? I went back to the practioner but they wouldn't accept that it had done anything detrimental and suggested I had the final treatment of HIFU which I declined as didn't want it made any worse :(.
i'm 20 with a slim face but i have really deep nasolabial folds and wrinkles on the smile lines in this case is it recommended? is my skin gonna be thinner and worsen the wrinkles?
Hi. I'm not able to provide you with specific advice, as I haven't assessed you. However, HIFU is not a treatment that I would recommend for someone in their 20's, as it is better suited for those that are 30+ with skin laxity concerns, that come with part of the natural ageing process. HIFU can be effective for deep nasolabial folds, but you would need to be assessed by an experienced practitioner, as other treatments may be better suited to you - to treat both the deep folds and wrinkles, depending on the nature and cause. You would need to take into account the potential risks and side effects of HIFU, that I have mentioned in my video, and be clear with any practitioners that you do not wish to experience volume loss. @@Sid-zc7pq Hi. Radiofrequency can also cause loss of volume, as it is heating the skin at depth, so similar considerations apply. I haven't assessed you, so I can't make recommendations for treatment for you. You would need to see an experienced practitioner, to assess your suitability. Radiofrequency microneedling may be a better option, as the skin is treated from the surface level down, and therefore needle depth and RF levels can usually be controlled more precisely. It is also an excellent collagen induction treatment. However, there are many machines on the market, and not all are created equal. The experience of a practitioner will also be key, as all treatments have the potential to have unwanted results, if not carried out correctly. I hope that helps, Nikki

Could u please help me with this question? I wanna apply this technic to get rid of my loosen skin that caused me double chin, I m not a fat petson. I have no problems with rinckles thank God, I have a fat face but I have a problem with the double chin as i gained weight on my teenage years then losed weight thats what caused the skin losse on my chin, thats why I think of doing hifu. My question: would applying hifu on my chin only, impact supperior parts of my face like chicks or eyes? 7:27

Is RF safer for using around the eyes if you have thin skin?
RF and RF microneedling can be a good option to treat around the eyes, but it will depend what your concern is - ie. lines & wrinkles, or tightening & lifting (or both), for example. It is very important that whomever is treating you understands the technology they are using, and can assess your skin fully. The skin around the eyes is very delicate, and we also have natural fat pads around the eyes, and if a practitioner is too aggressive and treats too deep/with too much heat, the natural fat pad volume can be broken down, which can lead to sagging around the area - this is the same for all area of the face. HIFU can be very effective for treating around the eye, depending on your concern and desired outcome. I hope that helps. Nikki

@@aleksandarstojceski3139 I’d recommend you speak with your practitioner about your concerns. It’s not quite as straightforward as temperature only. There’s so many other factors, including (but not limited to), the method of delivery, the frequency level, the treatment target depth, how long the area is heated for, your skin, your facial anatomy, your well-being, and the system being used (and the experience of practitioner). If I was having pure RF treatment, I’d have Indiba, which I know Abigail James offers (if you’re UK based). In my opinion, it’s the safest RF system I have experienced. I hope that helps. Nikki
Does it cause urinary incontinence? Frequent urination?
I believe this question relates to medical HIFU, which is not covered in this video. The HIFU treatment I refer to is for skin rejuvenation and urinary incontinence is not a side effect. Best, Nikki
Hello thank u for the very informative vid..unfortunately i had a very traumatic hifu experience..since i had a very high pain tolerance i was able to survive the pain of the procedure..during the procedure when the machine hit the side of of my forehead i felt a sensation at the topmost part of my head.after 2 days of that part of my head started to feel a little numb and i had a worse headache..and there is a sensation like its swollen and i feel like it is where my headache comes from..everytime i touch the part of my forehead where the machine hit me i feel like the top of my head jerks of something to that effect..what should i do?thank u for your advice

Yes, it can be carried out on the area that people often refer to as ‘bingo wings’, but there are different depths for treatment, so just make sure that whomever you have treatment with is experienced with treating that area. Please see a professional for assessment. HIFU shouldn't be used solely for destroying fat cells under the chin, that is not what it is designed for. I had hifu some days ago, i have 7 big lumps and some blisters on my cheek. Treatment was very painful, i had it 3 years ago and it was ok, and no lumps or burns. Im afraid these hard lumps will stay. I sent pictures to the practisioner. What is the best cream for now, and whats the best tteatment to get rid of them on a later stage?

I would recommend seeking advice from both your practitioner and a doctor, if you are concerned about your injuries. Hi. They are completely different types of treatment. CACI is a microcurrent treatment that stimulates muscle, whilst HIFU treats the skin, stimulating collagen and causing a tightening and lifting effect - which has a long-lasting effect on skin health and collagen quality/quantity. I always explain microcurrent treatments as being a bit like Slendertone for your face. It helps to stimulate the muscles, but you need to use it frequently to see/maintain results. A great at-home microcurrent option is a NuFace or Foreo Bear. Microcurrent treatments complement skin treatments like HIFU, as loss of muscle tone also contributes to the ageing signs we see in the mirror. I really do not understand how a practitioner could get it so wrong ? There are different heads for the machines that are only meant to move into skin depth according to what you are trying to achieve ... Its a setting ... so how can this go wrong ?
There are many ways to get it wrong. Treating clients that aren’t suitable in the first place, choosing the wrong cartridge, selecting energy settings that are inappropriate for the client, treating over nerves, fat pads. Going over the same area too many times, skin/cartridge contact incorrect and causing burns/blisters. To name just a few of the issues… I hope that helps. Nikki

These things you mention seem very common sense to me ... & if you are using a medical device you should be aware of the damage you could cause ... I would be mortified if i hurt someone ... I would want to have absolute certainty that i knew what i was doing before attempting anything on anyone ... Especially if theyre paying big money ... I think the main problem is NO ONE knows how an individual is going to respond at any given time ...And no one ( you are rare ) is going to be totally upfront about the risks ... its big money ... Had this couple days ago. Ended up with lumps, blister and slight burn on my cheeks. Looks like a damaged skin barrier and acne.
Going to try get a refund if it doesn't calm down in a few days.

HIFU targets the skin and doesn't weaken the muscles. But, when carried out incorrectly, it can destroy volume in the face. We have multiple fat pads that make up our facial anatomy and a layer of subcutaneous fat. When the fat is destroyed, the natural volume is lost, and the skin can sag. Destroyed fat cells cannot be restimulated. HIFU can be beneficial for some mature women, but the problem is that treatment is regularly carried out on people that were not suitable, and it seems to becoming a trend to try and use it to sculpt the face of younger women. And you're right; many practitioners will carry it out because it's a high value treatment - without considering suitability.

Hello, can u help me. I did hifu on jawline and on the 3rd day i got symptom if difficulty in swallowing. And on the 11th day i got tmj dysfunction that caused my jawlock. Can u explain how i got these from hifu. I dont have issues with my teeth and i didnt get hit by a ball or whatever
