The Chinese entrepreneurs chasing an Afghan ‘gold rush’ | 101 East Documentary

  • When the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, most foreigners and multinational companies had already packed up and left Afghanistan.
Going against the stream of foreigners fleeing the country was a group looking for “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunities: Chinese entrepreneurs.
Despite the ongoing unrest, an economic crisis and United Nations' concerns over human rights, more Chinese citizens are joining the country’s "gold rush". Once a small minority, Chinese nationals now make up Afghanistan’s biggest group of expatriates.
With exclusive access to leading Chinese investors, 101 East investigates their growing influence across Afghanistan’s business and media sectors.

I was born in Pakistan to an immigrant Chinese mother and an immigrant Indian Muslim father. My grandparents left Hubei China for Taiwan then Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka) and finally Pakistan when she was only an infant. They formed a community there amongst other expatriated Chinese and flourished. It wasn’t easy to assimilate but they found ways to support one another and succeed. Eventually most left and resettled in the West. Canada and for us the States. I was only 4 when we left but I remember bits and pieces. Seeing these Chinese entrepreneurs makes me reflect on the struggles my family must have shared and overcome. I wish both the Chinese and Afghans nothing but success on the difficult roads ahead.

Perhaps you know little about Chinese culture.
Western charitable organisations are structured by laws and openess. Inevitably they become loud and public.
Chinese do not follow such a method.
Due to historical reasons and the vastness of the Chinese population, governments and organisations are seldom involved in this activity. Most are done privately or personally....and these have been long in existence. Unpublicised, unreported....unheard of. However do not be misled...Chinese, like all peoples, have feelings of Compassion and Empathy so its normal for expressions of charity to be seen.

Your statement is rather simplistic....and even prejudicial.
First how do you know it waa a kidnap case?
If it was...there are laws that people need to follow. If you want to help, you still need to abide by the laws. This is Universally accepted in any law abiding nation.
Why should the law act against a law-abiding citizen...it makes no sense!
Can you imagine China, a nation of 1400 Million people, where the the law doae not respect law abiding citizens??? How can it function?
The fact China today is United, Peaceful, Productive, Properous and Progressive...having no Violence, Homlessness, high unemployment, no discrimination or racial issues...tells you that the law is respected and the law respects the public!!!
You should remove your prejudices and see the overall picture.

@@hoekeatung1760 I have seen videos *from China* where people (and children) are hit or run over by cars ... and no stops to help them. A video showed a small girl, maybe 5 years old who was run over by a car just outside a shop. Several people walked around her or drove a scooter or car around her, no one stopped to help as she twisted in pain on the ground. Even when someone finally helped her, I don't even know if she survived or not.
      How is that prejudice?
*People in China are afraid to help people in need because they can get in trouble if they do. That is just a sad truth.*
Another example, remember not long ago the woman who was chained up in a shed and forced to carry children for all the men of that family? Who helped her?
      No one.
Or what about the women in the restaurant who where harassed by gangsters and then beaten to death for not doing what they said? Who stepped in to help them?
      No one.
If you step in to help someone in China, you are just asking for trouble. How sad is that?
And just because you stopped talking about it doesn't mean the world around you forgot about it.

The West would commit and practice a great many cardinal sins, many of them knowingly, such as centuries-long global 'Colonization', 'Genocide', 'Slavery', 'Colonialism', 'Global Warming', etc which benefits them enormously for centuries worldwide; then they would initiate and take a measure to ban those practices worldwide, and take credit for it. [Note: Today's global warming is caused by nearly two centuries of excessive coal burning, mainly in the West.]
Since the end of World War II, 248 armed conflicts occurred in 153 regions in the world, of which 201 were initiated by the USA-led Capitalist Western bloc.
Truth is, the Capitalist Western bloc initiated all these armed conflicts for their very own interest, first and foremost.
[ For instance, Capitalist Imperialist Anglo Western war in Iraq was all about OIL, and 20 years of Afghan occupation was for RARE EARTH MINERALS. About half a million Iraq citizens and over one hundred thousand Afghans died... Their 15 years of war in Indochina was all about RUBBER that the region produced around 80% of world supply in those days. About 5 million innocent Vietnamese citizens and 6 million Cambodians died due to the direct and indirect effect of war.]
Slavery, Colonialism & Colonization are all evil things done by evildoers.
The West/Christian Europeans are major participants & benefactors of centuries-long global,
      - Slavery,
      - Colonialism,
      - Colonization worldwide, from North/South America to Australia/New Zealand to Siberia/Far-East Asia... Now they are claiming a big chunk of Antarctica as well.
Today, the same old lame old Europeans around the world are increasingly becoming more and more assertive in claiming; 'This is our world'/'The world belongs to us'.
      - Now you (should) know what's coming next, in the future... Ever heard of 'Camel In The Tent' which is already over halfway through, and oh yeah it's bound to happen sooner or later, give or take 500 years at the most.
Lately, space exploration ventures set up by wealthiest individuals, along with 'Space Force' set up by the USA. So where do all these lead to? So-called 'Explorations' always lead to 'Colonization'.., just ask Native American people.
The weak get beaten. Obviously, 'justice' doesn't work in the real life world where it's 'power' that rules. If you have power, you can be the honorable jury, the judge and the policeman of the world, even if you are a notorious life-long regular criminal.
True, the world is full of wolves wearing sheep's clothing, and playing victim.
These wolves are nothing more than 'Scumbags' who enjoy living off the people of the world's blood & sweat, lands & resources for generation after generation, century after century.
It's all about their Interests & Hegemony above all else, by all means and at all costs. The rest they couldn't care less. The rest is history.
Wolf will be wolf; with wolves roaming around, there's little or no chance the poor world will survive, let alone prosper. The world community must be united to overwhelm them.

Yes, it's unfortunate that their positive mindset didn't turn out better. I think they were a little naive and blinded somewhat by the thought of making lots of money. An example is having a hotel in a war zone, which is a difficult situation to turn a profit in. It seems they were played by the Taliban to a certain degree, as well, even being charged with espionage. So I think they need a better business plan, or for the moment-no plan at all, until things settle.

as an afghan, i was hesitant about this video because i don't necessarily agree with many of the taliban's decisions and i'm wary about having faith in them or anyone who trusts them. i also was hesitant because i'm wary of foreigners stealing afghanistan's resources without creating jobs or infrastructure for the people and leaving it with nothing. but this, 25:52, brought tears to my eyes. all i want is peace, safety, and stability for the people of my homeland. i want them to live happily and i want all our youth to grow strong, intelligent, and to go to school and university, without the heartache and pain that's seeped into their blood. i'm grateful to this man for doing what i can't do by helping those children. as much as i appreciate people investing financially in afghanistan, a person who wants to show it in a positive light and invest in its education, its children, and its future is someone i admire. at the same time, i think it was inevitable that he, and other businessmen, would struggle. the taliban have virtually no idea what they're doing in general, but especially when it comes to business, economy, or fixing infrastructure. i kind of get the feeling that they hope to wait it out until they can figure these things out, but they don't understand that investors can't wait that long and, more importantly, the afghan people cannot survive that long. i think they vastly overestimate their capability and vastly underestimate how complicated the world has become. i personally don't care who runs the country as long as they can create paths and systems for youth to become educated and to learn as much as they can from the world. i appreciate yang sen's vision, but it can be difficult to cultivate positivity in a country thats suffered for decades-- it isn't easy to find creativity or hope when those things are consistently squashed out (often times but the government he was trying to work with.) if he decides to continue in a less formal way, i think he might have more luck by reaching out to afghan youtubers, journalists, or comedians who have experience with editing and with the entertainment industry in afghanistan. many of them have fled or are in hiding but maybe he'll get lucky and find someone with a passion for storytelling. although whether they'll trust him and the taliban (which is notorious for murdering creatives) is an entirely other story.

Unfortunately China cannot do much to address this issue. It depends totally upon the Afghan Taliban Government.
Afghanistan's success story will be very² tough to overcome.
As for the VOP...the promoter shows real courage and noble intentions and should be supported all the way. Afghanistan need hundreds of thousands of such men...its a Crime to harm him. Unfortunately this too is uncertain.

Agreed totally....the situation of Afganistan is somewhat different.
And we should not be surprised. After all this nation has been the battle ground over centuries since the British tried to conquer her.
So they have a deeply suspicious mind towards any one or nation about being colonised again. This is a Fact.
This suspicion makes the nation very slow towards trusting even friends who have done themn no harm. Its regretable but true...and the people will suffer no end till Afghanistan wants to believe and to trust in true friendship.

We posted images of the middle open square area of our building where you see pallets of money being counted all around. Anyhow we have been unsuccessful in consistently collecting rents due on top of that years of delays in the so called court system. All updates from so called "representatives or attorneys" we only see an empty hand but must worse doom & gloom as far as potential future resolutions. Let's say they find gold which they should imagine what would happen. The hustle, the lies are at full throttle! Building strong community after 20 years (and more before that) of war, with so many family members dead or having fled (or wanting to do so) is mightily daunting. Of course, stopping the on-going violence must be a priority, but is no easy task. What comes to mind is real community organizing, but there's no guarantee it won't be seen as a threat in some way by the gov't. Slow, steady progress in trust building must take priority over economic enterprise. Much gratitude to Chinese gov't & people for these first steps, even as the rest of the world looks the other way.

How can anyone have faith in the future of Afghanistan when it seems like every other week the Taliban are breaking the legs of progress.
When they first took over they assured people that their rights wouldn't be taken away and that they would respect the freedoms that people in Kabul had.
Then they "temporarily" stopped education for girls after 6th grade and said it was due to lack of resources and cultural issues. They said they have formed a committee and will work to resolve this.
Soon after that, they restricted the rights of women working. Women were no longer allowed to work jobs that the Taliban didn't see fit for women, including working for foreign NGOs that were helping afghan women. With that restriction a lot of the NGOs pulled out and left those women unemployed further adding to the unemployment rate and poverty.
They first boasted and bragged about women being able to go to university and girls getting education till 6th grade but now they've banned women from gyms, public parks, and University.
The muslim world as well as the Afghan citizens are begging them to lift these restrictions as women contributed a lot to retail and kept businesses afloat, but they refuse to listen. If you lived under these conditions and every week there was a new restriction that lead to your unemployment and your children's education. Would you have faith or hope left for a better life?
