    Hey Matonizz. I have been a brass player (trumpet) since I was young, and now am a sophomore in high school. I recently switched to euphonium, and made the state band. I would like to invest in a good compensating euphonium for myself, instead of using the schools four valve non-compensating horn. Could you give me some recommendations on what to look for? Thanks!

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  Před 7 lety +7

      Depends what you're budget looks like. If you're looking under $2000 my suggestion would be either JP274 or Wessex Dolce, If you want under $3500 my suggestion would be JP374, if you want the top line horn I would say either Sterling Virtuoso, Adams E3 or E2 (with heavy valve caps both), Yamaha Neo or Besson Prestige. I personally playing Sterling, not the easiest horn to play with but I find the sound hard to match, Adams and Neo plays much easier and has pretty tone but you can't put just as much air through without messing the sound at least to certain extent, besson is kind of in between. Hopefully that gives you some clue of at least what I recommend to my students. You can get a nice discount for some of these horns at the moment as well. Let me know if you have any more question my friend! Best, Algirdas

    I can't wait for you to upload your impressions on the Wessex Dolce Euphonium. I am a freshman in college and I have been playing on a Besson Sovereign made in England from the mid 2000s before they started manufacturing in Germany. It is a great horn and I got it for a real steal a couple years ago but I am still curious if it is the best horn for me. I went to a conference recently and had a chance to try the Jupiter XO and Eastman euphonium. In that small test, I actually liked how the XO played better than my Sovereign but didn't like the Eastman at all. The Dolce is compelling with so many great reviews from experienced players including David Werden and the fact that it is only $1440 for the top of the line silver and gold trim. Also it almost seems like a no-brainer to take the chance and buy one since there is a 14 day satisfaction return policy. Looking forward to your review!

    I currently play one 642 (well it's a buds that I am holding hostage haha) and where it is a solid horn, I feel like I've overgrown it. The neo feels to me like a revamped 642 (and it really is). Seems to me the neo series is the "let's reintroduce the 642 and forget the old model" line. My personal opinion is that anyone looking for a Yamaha to consider a neo over the standard 642. Keep it up man! You hit some key notes (no pun intended) that made me think "ok so I'm not the only one thinking that". Can't wait for the next video!

    Hey man, great video and review. I have a question. How did you even become a professional euphonium player and what does it take do become one?

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  Před 7 lety +2

      Hey buddy, glad you find the videos useful! Also, great question! I guess the story is pretty long here so I'll do a vlog video at some point. But generally, I did my undergraduate in UK, Manchester. Third year I started entering some competitions and I won a pretty big one which was Foden's Open Solo competition. As a part of a prize Besson was supposed send me to Australia to represent UK at Ern Keller's solo competition but that got cancelled. To compensate for it they gave me a tour with River City Brass the upcoming year. By around third year I really started bumping up my activities trying to get some performances in Europe. I did a lot of those for free and tried making as many contacts as possible and leaving positive impressions everywhere I went. I got a deal with Sterling in 2014 and after I went to play with River City, they needed a euphonium player. The conductor liked what he heard so he offered me the gig. In 2015 I moved to USA and so far haven't looked back. Obviously, these is way more to it but that's generally how things went. I'll try do a video maybe talking about this a bit more in future. Hope that answers the question mate!

      Job such as military band will pay off the living and help you keep on improving your playing skills. On top you will be able explore other music options until you find your ideal music career. If you're not planning on teaching in university or play in military band you don't need to study music to achieve career in music. Go study something which will actually help you to achieve your goal like business, marketing, videography and etc. Think outside the box brother ;)

    Hey man, I'm currently looking for a professional euphonium for college that has great intonation, a rich dark sound, and one that can project really well. My price range is around 6 to 7 thousand dollars and I don't really know which would be best born to choose. Would you possibly know a horn that would fit that criteria? Thanks

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  Před 7 lety +2

      Hey buddy! There are many great choices you could go with for that price range. I'd say Sterling Virtuoso, Adams E2 and E3 (with heavy valve caps) and Yamaha Neo would be frontrunners. I myself like Virtuoso a lot. It's not the easiest horn to play on but sound and projection wise I would argue that it has an edge over most of the euphoniums if not all. If I wasn't doing brass band and I was only focusing on solo work I could see where horns like Adams would work really well. However, go with either of these four models. They are all different so I will recommend trying them yourself to see which one you prefer. With that in mind, if you do decide to get a virtuoso feel free to shot me an email and I'll help you to figure out a good deal both playing and pocket wise. Sorry if that wasn't defined to one horn and I don't want to blow smoke and say that one of them is hands down better. They are all good horns but people have different tastes and styles of playing. Hope that helps my friend and let me know if you have any other questions. Best, Algirdas

    Any thoughts of doing a review about using lefreque plates?

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  Před 7 lety

      That's an interesting one. I've got 8 more instrument review videos coming and then mouthpiece videos following. Might be a good topic for future. For now, please spend your money by buying your wife, girlfriend, mother or someone else flowers, dinner or a small gift rather than spending hundreds of dollars on couple metal strips. The price is ridiculous for what you get out of it :D Useless? No! Overpriced. YES!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope that gives you a clue on what my review would look like. However, if you ever get your hands on one for free or very cheap you might find a couple of notes in bottom and high range more centered if you play Besson. Do you have any experience with this lefreque? Sorry if I sound negative but I'd rather people not get robbed :) I've seen the process when they were developing the thing since I studied at RNCM back then and I know you can buy metal strips at the store which will do the job for $10 or less. Just saying :)

    Hi! Not really related to the vid, but in the US, I've seen most tuba players playing CC tubas. Is it bad to play an Eb tuba in America? Just wondering cause I'm a student that's going to need a tuba soon, and I kinda want a Eb. If you can give me advice that would be appreciated! :)

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  Před 7 lety +1

      Hey! The reason why they do C tubas and even C trumpets mainly in US is because most of the universities are heavily focused on Symphony Orchestra playing and that's what they use in U.S. as oppose to Bb in a lot of European countries. Eb is what is often used in brass bands so it pretty much depends on where you live and what are you planning to do. I assume you're not from US?

    Hey, great video you do a great job showing off the pros and cons of the instrument. I'm going into college and I'm not sure how much I should be paying for a Euphonium. I mean I don't need like the best Euphonium in the world but definitely a more advanced instrument than the baby Yamaha the school let me use. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks for kind words my friend! In terms of not over spending, nowadays you can find some really good cheaper options. I'm pretty high on JP horns. I have JP274 and JP374 in my house which I've been testing for a while and I think they're are fantastic more affordable option. Check the link down below and you'll see me play JP274. www.dfmusicinc.com have them in stock and you can have 10% with my promo code which makes it even more affordable. The only downside to those horns are valve guides. They are not very durable but on the flipside they are extremely cheap and very easy to replace. Both of those horns would do really well for college. Hope that helps my friend. Feel free to let me know if you have any more questions. Best, Algirdas

    I really would like a review/opinion of the Yamaha 8042s. Any chance of that? Also, have you ever tried the Lafreque plates?

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  Před 7 lety

      I actually played 8042s in couple of concerts this year. My assistant euphonium at River City plays on it. It plays pretty easy and seems to have generally a pretty good longevity. However, it definitely has some tuning unbalance between low and high range and might be tricky to tune well unless you are pretty good using trigger and do have one on yours. Also, the sound is a bit on a thin side in comparison to Neo, at least from my experience. In terms of Lafreque, that's a whole new story :D probably worth making a whole video on. If I ever do another video on Yamaha I'll ask my guy to lend me his horn and I'll record some playing so people can judge themselves. Thanks for watching Ronald and best of luck my friend!

    Hey matonizz, I play trombone as I primary instrument, although I also play tuba and euphonium in some ensembles. I would like to ask your opinion on mouthpiece placement. Where do you put yours for different ranges? Thanks in advance!

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  Před 7 lety

      I usually don't mess around much with placement, I just focus that the gap would be centered to the shank pipe. That being said I do change the angles. So when I go higher I usually try to take the pressure away from the top lip as much as possible and vise versa when going down. Check the two links down below, I explain that in a more detailed fashion. Let me know if you have any questions about those two my friend!
      czcams.com/video/yuY7_JNQX2A/video.html

    • @evankos
      @evankos Před 7 lety

      Those videos were very helpful, thank you. I noticed in some videos that your lip openings is very close to the bottom of the mouthpiece. I do that as well, although I have had teachers disagree on where it should be. Is it okay to have my lip opening towards the bottom of the mouthpiece?

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  Před 7 lety

      Usually upper lip is thicker than the lower. You want both upper and lower lips to be placed inside the cup with the gap facing the shank. Since the upper lip is thicker naturally you will need more space for it and therefore it might visually appear that the opening is more towards the bottom. As long as it's not vise versa it's ok, it will look different from player to player due to different lip size but generally the embouchure will be on the lower side of the mouthpiece. Hopefully that makes sense.
