The World still remembers with nostalgia and affection a primary school dropout born into crushing poverty in the village of Sona-Bata, who would lose his father at a tender age, but who would later defy the odds and rise to become the undisputed King of Rhumba.
Franco Luambo Makiadi may be gone, but his music lives on.

Am Zimbabwean, but I grew up listening to Rhumba vibes by giants such as Franco. As I do not speak Lingala or French, I do not understand what the guys are talking about in their songs. It seems the best of this genre was created in the DRC and nowhere else in Africa. Each time I listen to these sounds, I silently weep over how Africa was raped by colonialism. Now its leaders in what ought to be post-independence Africa are competing to tear it down through generalised misgovernance, corruption etc. Such a shame, really.

This is beyond music. It's an artistic mastery. Franco luambo makiadi, the entire TPOK jazz band and it's producers have left a mark of an enigmatic nostalgia in our hearts forever.
Growing up in the nyanza region of Kenya a region famous for passionate generation of connoisseurs of fine music and finer things in life, TPOK jazz blissful tunes were very much ingrained into our everyday lives.
Every household whether in the deep rural, urban estates or suburbs proudly owned a piece of the record either in form of a vinyl or a cassette.
Their tunes dominated the airwaves and were all time favourite in family living rooms, offices, police stations, hospitals, farm fields, army barracks, government buildings, places of business, entertainment joints, restaurants and the local radio stations.
For years and decades their work of art has refreshed, entertained, calmed, comforted, provided solace and soothed many hearts and minds.
I say thank you for sharing your gifts to the world with an open heart.
    What a masterpiece. 🙏🙏

He was popular before the internet and in Sub-Sahara Africa at that. From the DR Congo, Makiadi demonstrated what happens when you do music right. True Legend. He has almost singularly elevated Zaire beat to international recognition. It's simply classic. I stumbled into his music at a Nairobi record shop in early 1980, bought a few LPs and cotinue to enjoy todate.

Once you start getting a few words, these Rhumba hits become even exceedingly sweeter..... Most of the lyrics are extremely poetic in their composition touching on social issues (love-bolingo; death-Liwa; religion-bonzambe; family-famie/bandeko; wealth/money-Bozwi/Mbongo; power/leadership- Bokonzi/Mokonzi etc)... Anyway, let us enjoy the legendary music bandeko.

Each time I listen to these legends..am deeply moved that Africa is rich..but the state of Congo is devastating..what are you doing to bring back the lost glory of this mother land thru your music.I look forward to a future..where men will be driven by compassion..empathy,selflessness and wellbeing of their less priveledged pple..in their so called countries..instead of building hedges and big walls..to separate them frm who haven'ts.

Unfortunately the Congolese politicians are the most inhumane people on earth. The current president is the most useless president on earth. He never had a job in his life. His first job??? President of the country like Congo. He’s now a billionaire and all his family and friends are multimillionaires.
