Love you and your videos .
Thx for reacting to this movie i love this movie i watched it many times.
5:19 sara paulson she isnt miss honey in matilda
Danny DeVito technically made a classic and we thank him for it. He truly understood Roald Dahl’s vision. (Although Roald Dahl has some dubious aspects in his writing)
It’s a shame that the movie ended up becoming a box office bomb. Then again, I think that’s a problem with every Roald Dahl adaptation.
1971 Willy Wonka
1990 The Witches
1996 James and the Giant Peach
2009 Fantastic Mr. Fox
2016 The BFG
Tim Burton was in charge of James & The Giant Peach which I adore
1971 Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is one of the best Ronald Dahl adaption into movie
@@osmanyousif7849 I mean at the time 1971 WWATCF was a flop. Except later into the years it was recognized as a classic. This usually happens with a lot of movies during the timebeing.
My favorite part of this is the behind the scenes. Mara Wilson‘s mom had cancer during the filming and Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman took her in and we’re basically her parents during the filming. Awful parents on screen but amazing people in real life!
Mara’s mother died before the movie could be released. So Danny Devito offered her before her time pass to see the final cut of the film before release.
I can only imagine what that probably meant for Mara. Her mother would’ve been very proud.
@@osmanyousif7849we don’t deserve Danny Devito
Another big difference from the book: at the end of the book, Matilda actually does lose her abilities.
As it turned out, she was only able to do so because she wasn't being academically challenged in Miss Honeys class, so her brain had to make up for it somehow.
But that all stopped once she was transferred to a higher, more appropriate grade, because now for the first time in her life, she's being actively challenged, instead of having her smarts go to waste.
I love that
Great metaphor for kids who aren't challenged or engaged
The energy gets out 1 way or another
I literally had the Matilda syndrome (as I called it) since I was so thoroughly under challenged at (idk how it's called, like the first six years of my education?) that I had problems sleeping and had like urges to do stuff just because my mind was too busy at night. It was honestly pretty terrible (and no, I couldn't move things with my mind, such a shame), but stopped right when I went to the next school and did more than read the sillmarilion all day (read that when I was ten/eleven cuz again, I had nothing to do).
okay I get that Ending from that metaphorical perspective, but from a in-universe and telekinetic thats low-key trash. if you developed telekinetic powers the only reason you'd lose it is if you purposely neglect it... and being more academically challenged or not what child would give up beneficial abilities like that? which is in itself a form of mental challenge?
@@observantwonderer7401 She's a kid who still has no idea what she wants to be. Why should she resign herself to a life of a miracle worker, where people will most likely take advantage of her every chance she gets.
@@observantwonderer7401 She didn't lost her powers on purpose, she didn't know how they worked or why she had them. She asked miss honey why her powers disappeared and the teacher explain her theory, that maybe changing class is the cause, but they have no way of confirming it.
Mara Wilson was actually really nervous about dancing on the table, so Danny Devito got the whole cast to dance behind the camera with her.
It's cute
this is still one of my favorite behind-the-scenes stories
A big fat lie
@@isisblades5070 no its not. Danny Devito himself said it on the DVD commentary
I love the backstory I learned about this movie.
Apparently at the time Mara Wilson was doing this movie, her mother was sick with stage four cancer. Her mother and father were attending a lot of treatments so DeVito and his wife offered to watch Mara for her parents while they were in the hospital for treatments. Unfortunately, the mother’s condition got really bad and she was permanently hospitalized and it was said she would die before Matilda was released in theaters. So DeVito took the only put together copy of the film they had (90% done) and brought it to the hospital to show Mara’s mother so she got to see the film her daughter helped make. And when she died before the film was released, DeVito insisted on a tribute at the end which is why there is ‘For Susie Wilson’.
My heart just broke when I learned that. DeVito is seriously cool for all of that, none of which he was required to do but chose to do.
Danny Devito’s a baddie what can I say
Also Mara Wilson stopped acting after this movie because she started getting sexualized. Similar to how Millie Bobby Brown, Billie Eilish and Emma Watson had countdowns to when they turned 18. Yuck.
10:22 The kid didn't eat all of it, but he still did have to eat a lot of it. In fact after they finally finished, he got sick to his stomach. I think what they basically did was have 4 to 5 different cakes, each with more cake missing, to make it look like he'd been eating it.
Oh gooooood. That poor kid
I pretty sure he was disgusted by chocolate after that
While looking at it now, Miss Honey does look like Sarah Paulson, but Embeth Davidtz is an entirely different actress.
Yeeeeep. My brain thinking in different ways
If you’ve seen her in Schindler‘s List and Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness you probably remember her.
Miss Honeys house is very different from the book. The main difference being that there is literally nothing in there besides a small camping stove, and two wooden boxes. Matilda didn't decide to help her just to get justice for Miss Honeys father. She also did it because Miss Honey needed serious help.
There's a whole bit that mentions that the Trunchbull told her that now that she's an adult, she has to start paying her back for everything she did for her. The only money she had was a pound a week. The Trunchbull made her sign a paper that would redirect all of her paycheck directly into her bank.
The Book version of the Trunchbull is vile.
and that was after she took Ms. Honeys rightful inheritance.
I'm still dirty about it 😅
@@sarahobah ah but she didn't. She took her salary.
If the assumption is she killed the father for the inheritance, and given we find out Miss Honeys inheritance was never touched all this time, then the natural conclusion here is that after the father died, Trunchbull was informed she wasn't entitled to the inheritance because it's in Miss Honeys name, and thus took it out on Miss Honey by stealing her wages.
@@videohistory722 I was talking about the house 😅
@@sarahobah my bad. But still, I can't believe it took me watching reactions to the movie as an adult to realize Trunchbull stole her wages because she couldn't get her hands on the money part of the inheritance.
After seeing this movie as a kid, I really thought you could just get adoption papers from books.🙃
Also would love to see a collab with Billy, it would be hilarious! 😄
Hahahahah that is so cute
In all seriousness, Danny Devito is father of the year. He took care of Mathilda’s actress when her mom was sick and died. He even helped her mom see the film before she died. He and his wife were so supportive.
I admire them so much for that.
14:05 in the book, Miss Honey doesn't believe her, and asks her to do it again only to prove she in fact can't do it.
Another difference is Matilda DID prove it, and Miss Honey was completely and utterly shocked.
Don't you love it when those celebrities who are known for acting also prove to have solid directing skills? Thank you a lot, Danny DeVito.
1. How are Matilda's parents and Trunchbull not in jail?
2. Trunchbull could just lift an entire tree and I wouldn't be surprised.
3. In the wrong context, this movie is CURSED
4. Miss Honey is BAE
Accuracy down the board
Because I think that's the point of the movie. A lot of children are abused, try and tell someone just to be shut down or not believed. And all it takes is just one person to believe in you. Like how Miss Honey was abused for years into adulthood and no one knew.
In a horror context, Trunchbull is nightmare fuel
In a comedy context, she is 100% meme
It is a fine line to balance on
Actually yes, as per the book the Trunchball was in the Olympics!
Did you recognize her as Aunt Marge in Harry Potter?
Fun Fact: One of the FBI Agents was PeeWee Herman (and also in ‘Dunston Checks In’) and the other one was a key character in ‘Erin Brockovich’ (which you should react to).
‘Matilda’ is for every age. I mean, I’m sorry you were robbed of a good movie in your formative years but you’re all caught up now and get the book which was illustrated by Quentin Blake.
Honestly just glad I could enjoy it now!!
Lol
8:52 that's her secret. Anything that could be reported is so outlandish, no one would ever believe anyone who'd say anything.
I think the best thing about Roald Dahl's stories is that they are all really dark. Walt Disney once said you shouldn't pander to kids. They know there are villains and dark things in the world. Neil Gaiman also said something similar, that kids know there are monsters, they need to know they can beat the monsters. Roald Dahl has some truly despicable and horrific "villain" characters in his books. Like truly. But the kids over come, work though, etc. It's such a vital and important thing for kids to learn and I have loved his stories since reading them as a child. Matilda, Danny Champion of the World, The BFG, Witches, so many great books.
I love this crazy movie. One of my favorite 90s movies alongside Home Alone. Pam Ferris is hilarious a Ms Trunchbull. That "tally ho" scene makes laugh every time and I love seeing people reacting to it first time. 🤣

Ah, my childhood! I freaking loved this movie. Glad you liked it!
SO GOOD
This is a giant comfort movie for me. My uncle Bill watched this movie with me during snow days when I was ten. He was a really sweet gentle person who sadly lost his battle with depression but he always treated me like his daughter so now whenever I'm missing him I put this on.

THE ACCURACY
The movie version of the musical will be coming out on Netflix in December. I've seen the musical 4 times already and the music is so good. Its based on the book not this movie so obviously there are differences but there is plenty similar
I can’t wait
The Stage Musical is amazing, one of the best soundtracks to a Musical, I got to see it about 4 years ago, “Kinky Boots” is another gem that you can watch the movie & the stage musical

I LOVED that you added the Shrek "gingerbread man" scene twice, because that is my brain. LOL
I remember having a relative who was EXACTLY like Miss Honey except she taught English. I wish I’d seen the movie with her and I feel so happy that I knew many Miss Honeys in my life. #AdoptUsMissHoney
"I'm start, youre dumb, I'm big you're little, I'm right, you're wrong" was my dad's favourite speech when he got mad
I really wish I'd watched Matilda as a kid, Matilda finding comfort in her books in her friendlessness was something that would've hit home for me.
Mara Wilson's performance is one for the ages too. "This is illegal!" always makes me laugh out loud in a very involuntary way. It's too precious and pure.
Same for me because I have ASD and books were my only friends during a lot of years.
I was able to read my books with pictures at 4 years old despite the fact I didn't know how to read (I have a good memory so I remembered what the characters said and at what moment)
@@a.g.demada5263 Small world, I'm on the spectrum myself (Closer to Asperger's). I never really thought of looking at Matilda through that lens but it makes a lot of sense.
@@bespectacledheroine7292 me neither I have to admit.
I also don't know yet what type I am because I'm french and the France is very late for that type of diagnosis
@@a.g.demada5263 Interesting, I hope it changes soon. I've been told by docs they don't actually officially use the Asperger's classification anymore and you can just say you have autism if you like, but I grew up thinking myself as having that "milder" form so it's hard not to all of a sudden. But in other word I wouldn't worry too much about type, it seems the way the diagnosis is tending is as an umbrella term.
@@bespectacledheroine7292 I'm not very sûre about it honestly. It's been nearly three years I wait for having a first consultation and I have a date for it only last friday.
Yes, for X reason, we don't use the term " Asperger " anymore
You also need to see James And The Giant Peach!

It’s also based on a Roald Dahl book, and it was made by the creators of Nightmare Before Christmas!
(Jack Skelington even makes a cameo in it!)
Did you know they recreated the Cake Scene at a reunion? It made me chuckle a lot.
Matilda is a little bit like nightmare fuel but it's also why it gives you something to believe in it's kind of wonderful things that made me believe in the impossible so it has that feel good thing to work
Roald Dahl can write some dark and twisty. We know his contribution to children’s literature but try reading ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ in one sitting.
Mara Wilson is an icon, a legend and she is the moment. Have you seen her reaction to people reacting to the ‘Matilda’ Challenge?

this was my favorite movie when i was little! i had a recorded VHS copy of it it but because i couldn't read, i scribbled all over the label so i could identify it and also so it would stay dedicated to matilda with nothing else recorded on it. my parents got me the actual tape with the box for my birthday and i was so fuckin happy
Mara Wilson's mom was dying and wasn't gonna be able make it to watch this movie, so Danny DeVito arranged it so she could see it before she died. Also, Mara lived with him and his wife (his wife in the movie) for a while because her mom was in the hospital. At least that's what I've heard I may have some details wrong
Oh, it's cute if it's true
fun fact Danny DeVito thats his real wife in the movie and sad fact the girl who played Matilda her mom was dying when she was playing this movie .and she ask Danny if he can take care of her , Danny and his wife raise her when her mom past ..
The Trunchbull was played by none other than Pam Ferris, aka Aunt Marge from Harry Potter.
Miss Trunchbull is perfect. She looks *exactly* like the illustration in the book.
In France, her last name is changed but I don't like it because it makes it very similar to my own name
That Cake eating scene is TRAUMATIZING
It is and every time I eat chocolate cake I think of this scene 😂.
One of my childhood favorites.
18:31 There's a magnet inside the chalk, and someone is using a magnet to write the words backwards. With the words already written backwards on the other side.
Yeah, ROald Dahl himself couldn't give a reason why she was there, just said "and how she ever got this job is a mystery".

When this movie came out I was in third grade and my teacher looked and acted exactly like Miss Honey. I think of her every time I see this movie, she was so sweet.
Miss Honeys fathers portrait is actually of a young Roald Dahl
4:23 Don't worry, he will loose it if he doesn't wash it soon. The book confirmed - Mrs Wormwood only uses one teaspoon of it in a whole basin of water and only applies it to touch her hair up every few months or so, and it still causes a lot of her hair to fall out.

To sum it up, Matilda is about an abused child that has superpowers and is also a genius that solves a murder mystery (this is mostly going by the musical but they have the same idea)
Did you know there’s going to be a ‘Matilda: The Musical’ Movie? Dame Queen Emma Thompson plays Miss Trunchbull (weird character design though).
Im glad they kept the character design the same as the stage show.
The shot of her using her powers to pull a book off the shelf is actually a guy with a fishing pole pulling it off while laying on a skateboard.
That is incredible
Fun fact. The actress who plays Matilda, her mother was dying in the hospital. Danny DeVito took care of her during the making of the movie, and when it was finished, her mother got an early copy before she died. And after her mom passed away, he took care of her afterwards
Fact: the woman who plays Trunchbel also plays Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter
Fun fact : the portrait of Miss Honey's father is in fact a portrait of Roald Dahl, the author of the book " Matilda "
4:25 R.i.p Steve Harwell 😢

You should react to the new Matilda - 2022. You'll... love it.
I absolutely love that one. I have both Matilda's on dvd. They're both so good.
Some recommendations for some movies (I don't know whether or not you've seen them, so I apologize if I list some you have already seen):
- Fantastic Mr. Fox (I think you'll really enjoy this one since it's stop-motion, and after your reaction for Coraline, I would love to see you react to it)
- The Shining (Personally my favorite horror film, and since Halloween and the month of October is right around the corner, I figure it would be a perfect film to watch)
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (This is a very unique and influential film, and if you haven't seen it I highly recommend it. I can't say how you'll feel about it and the only way to know is to watch it)
- Airplane (A hilarious comedy that is one of my personal favorites)
- Bram Stoker's Dracula [1992] (A very good Dracula adaptation and a fantastic film - also great for Halloween)
- Over The Hedge (A fun animated movie that I get immense nostalgia from)
- Some Tarantino Films (examples: Pulp Fiction, Hateful Eight, Kill Bill Vol.1&2, etc.)
- Planes, Trains, And Automobiles (Another super fun comedy)
- Schindler's List (Quite a sad, but really great film about the Holocaust and events that unfolded during it)
- Godfather films (I mean, they are pretty much classics and are regarded very highly, so I would recommend you give them a look at)
- Alien, Aliens (The first two Alien films are amazing Science Fiction / Horror films - also great for Halloween)
- Some Other Horror Films: Dracula 2000, Thirteen Ghosts (the newer one, I think 2001), The Thing (1982)
If you ever decide to do series/anime, here are just a few I think you should react to:
- Game Of Thrones (A lot of people have reacted to this before but it is a fantastic show overall)
- True Blood (I believe a highly underrated and unseen series by HBO - Super fun, and very few people react to it)
- Hunter X Hunter (My favorite anime, and if you haven't seen it you should!)
I don't know, just some recommendations!

This is so good! I honestly love all of your videos and please please please do a reaction video to Top Gun or Top Gun Maverick!
Oooh, YES!! I've been watching so many Top Gun: Maverick reactions and it would be awesome if he does a reaction to both films too!
5:34 First off: at the time they filmed this, they actually were husband and wife.
So what they did for this was put on a harness under the suit he's wearing, that connects to the hat, so when she tries to pull it off, he's holding it on with his whole body. So when you see her cutting the hat off in the next scene, she's actually cutting the wires from the harness off of the hat.
The shot of the mom backflipping off the table wasn't her, it was a stunt double.
And as for the cream tarts, what they did was set up miniature catapult seesaws, put a tart on one end on them, and essentially send them flying.
Danny DeVito and Rhea, who played Matilda's parents, are married in real life.
I was lucky enough to see the show in London with my sisters for my birthday & it was amazing so am really looking forward to the new film version coming to Netflix.
7:26 - 7:33
I'm surprised that they cut out Hortensia's backstory from the book. Seriously, this girl has no filter and while I loved it, you begin to realize that she's a survivor. She was sent six times to The Chokey (which I don't know why nobody calls it an iron maiden when you look at that room), in her first term.
The first time was because she decided to play a prank on the Trunchbull (I mean, who wouldn't. I would want to put some dirt on that headmistress). She poured syrup on to the seat of the chair the Trunchbull was going to sit on at prayers (Hortensia: When she lowered herself into the chair, there was a loud squelching noise, and it was beautiful. And when she jumped up again, the chair sort of stuck to the seat of those awful green breeches she wears and came up with her for a few seconds until the thick syrup slowly came unstuck. Then she clasped her hands to the seat of her breeches and both hands got covered in the muck. You should have heard her bellow.). But some kid snuck on Hortensia, saw what she did, and ratted her out (She knocked his teeth out later on.), and the Trunchbull sent her to the Chokey for a whole day.
The second time she played another prank where she snuck into the Trunchbull's room, while she was out teaching a class. Hortensia searched through her drawers where she kept all her gym underwear, and poured a load of inching-powder, called The Skin Scorcher ("made from the powdered teeth of deadly snakes, and it was guaranteed to raise welts the size of walnuts on your skin..."), on every pair the Trunchbull had. And so when the Trunchbull wore them for gym at school, she started scratching like crazy, only for the scratching to get even worse (Hortensia: She must have thought she had a wasp nest down there. And then, right in the middle of the Lord's Prayer, she leapt up and grabbed her bottom and rushed out of the room.). Hortensia felt she wouldn't be caught, but even then, the Trunchbull gave her a day in the Chokey anyway. Mainly because of the Trunchbull's "nasty habit of guessing". Hortensia was mainly accused because of the syrup prank, despite no proof. And her trip to the Chokey was even worst than before since she suffered so many cuts from the broken glass and nails.
Being at that school is basically war, when you think about it.
