    Order of sample draw | Order of draw | Blood sample collection order
    ORDER OF DRAW
    To avoid cross-contamination, blood sample should be drawn and collected in tubes in a specific order.
    Purpose
    To avoid possible test result error due to additive carryover.
    To avoid cross contamination.
    The recommended order of draw is
    First - blood culture bottle
    Second - coagulation tube
    Third - non-additive tube
    LAST draw - additive tubes
    Blood cultures.
    Light blue top tubes. (Gold Top (Serum Separator, "SST") Contains separating gel and clot activator.
    Red top tubes
    Green top tubes
    Lavender top tube
    Grey top tubes
    Blood culture tube or bottle
    Sodium citrate tube ( blue cap)
    Serum tubes, with clot activator and gels (red, gold or yellow cap)
    Heparin tube with or without gel (dark green or light green cap)
    EDTA tube with or without gel separator (lavender cap)
    Sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate glycolytic inhibitor (eg, gray cap)
