  • Zeinab Badawi continues her journey through the history of human development travelling to meet the Maasai of east Africa - one of the best known of the continent’s ethnic groups. They help explain how human beings began to domesticate animals and become pastoralists. Then in Zimbabwe with one lively farming family, Zeinab examines how humans also began to settle and make a living from farming. And she also looks at how the Iron Age transformed life in Africa and paved the way for the development of rich urban civilisations.

I am impressed by the scientist’s analysis of the Rain Dance. His conclusion, even from a scientific viewpoint, is that no one scientific culture is totally capable of explaining nature and its diverse phenomena.
He strictly advises that no particular culture should arrogate superiority to itself in this endeavour. Nature is too diverse and complex to be understood and interpreted by only one culture, however tempting.
Against the backdrop of scientific mindset, he maintains that there’s something to be gained from the singing (ululating), chanting, dancing, visual arts etc of African culture, which also represents its unique documentation.
That’s coming from a science teacher with extensive knowledge and experience!

I agreed and understand Mr. Nyathi's point of view and I share his view. The problem of White Wester society and culture is that it sees itself as having THE ONLY correct and proper view of life. That a western world view is the only legitimate view, which is utterly false. But because they feel superior to others in the world ESPECIALLY African culture they repeatedly try to invalidate African beliefs and customs. What she said was very rude and ignorant for a host to ask while presenting the history of Africa. Shame on you.

For those of the commentators who seem to be outraged by the way she is dressed ... with “bling” and makeup. It’s a simple necklace and she’s only wearing some lipstick and possibly some blush ... big deal. This is who she is ...are we to expect that she dress like the people she’s interviewing? Don’t be ignorant. There are ALWAYS people with problems for every solution ... they will always find something to criticize. Anyway, superb series ... thanks Beth much to Ms.Badawi & the BBC.

I like your eloquent presentation of Africa History but in this episode 2 devoted to cattle and pastoral life of Africans, you cannot finish it without talking about Denka/Dinka/Nuer/Naath's cattle and/Nilotic(named after River Nile) of South Sudan. I am aware that you are our sister from the Sudan/South Sudan/Kush. So, Nilotic dependence on their cattle. I am also aware you presented this in Nubian and their cattle but you missed cattle from South Sudan, I don't know if this intentional or mistake based on your fierce interview with Dr. Garang de Mabior in 1990s/2000s given his version Africa History as he also quoted Africa History vol 1-7 by UNESCO. I typically refrain from making comments on CZcams. I was compelled to negate the misconception that "Africans did not write". This sentiment is beyond erroneous. I suggest propagators of such a fallacy should research and explain the existence of African Writing Systems.
African Writing Systems confirm the existence of Indigenous African literature and literacy. African Writing Systems also predate the existence of all non African Writing Systems. Non African Writing Systems like the Phoenician Alphabet/Script were inspired by Hieroglyphs which is just one of many forms of African Writing Systems. It should be noted that the Phoenician Alphabet/Script inspired the Greek and Aramaic Writing Systems. Therefore, it should be deduced that African Writing Systems birthed writing in Eurasia and consequently everywhere else. Please disregard the nonsense often postulated that the Sumerian Script predates African Writing Systems.
It is quite tragic that Africas contributions to History are inadequately presented in an educational discourse by well intentioned people of African descent.

I was taught at school that Native Americans had no writing system. It was only when I started watching African American historians that I learnt that invading Europeans destroyed their literature at the behest of the Pope who deemed it the work of the devil.

MARK ANIGBO, thank you, brother. I thought the same thing, when brother Phatisa said it, but he made such other profound comments about cultural understanding that rendered his error forgivable, in my estimation. But you are correct. His statement must be corrected. It is an out right lie that Africans did not write and unfortunately many African scholars perpetuate it. Nevertheless, general statements about anything being indicative of all cultures and all ethnic groups for the entire continent of Africa are troublesome because of the scope of time and the vast diversity of culture and history that exist and the devastation from invasions, colonialism and slavery. It is possible that his statement in the context of those specific people did not have writing in the last millennium, may be correct, but not for all of Africa throughout all of its history.

43:58 So he’s right, let them have their traditional religion, even if they haven’t heard of Jesus. Christians need to stop force-teaching every person into Christianity. Let them have their own beliefs so they can keep their own culture alive. Micah 4:5 “…all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the Lord our God, for ever and ever.”
God doesn’t care which god they worship as long as all people have all their needs met, as long as no one is oppressed and starving, because God is love. And maybe someday in the future, every person on earth will worship Jesus as savior, and God the Father through their free will, not by being forced into Christianity. Read history and see how Christians almost forced every person into Christianity. They sent missionaries, who were misguided. Don’t go knocking door to door, thinking it’s necessary or that God demands it.
