  • 25 years ago today "Focus" was released. It is insanely crazy how much love and support this album has received over the years. It was an album that took a few listens to catch on since there was so much music crammed into each song. It was an expression as to where we were at, who we were, what we wanted to play at that time and we didn't care who approved of it or not. Most at that time did not approve. "it wasn't memorable enough, it was to technical, not catchy enough" we heard them all. I am blessed to say we never wavered, continued forward, and created Focus. This could not have been done without the incredibly talented, incredibly giving and just an absolute wonderful man, friend and engineer Scott Burns.
A huge thank you to all the listeners and supporters over the years. Feeling blessed, grateful and honored to express and inspire and to be remembered and celebrated by so many on this day. My facebook page and instagram have been on fire!!! I recently got my hands on a little bit of my lost studio footage from Morrisound Studios when we were recording the album. Here is a little clip to say Thank You to all who have supported Cynic over the past 25 years...
    Love and Light to all...
    Jason
P.S. You may see a couple other familiar faces from another band on this clip. I am sure you will know who they are...

Needs to be a mini documentary on this record. It is still the yard stick for technical metal imho. Unsurpassed to this day.

Atheist bros and legendary Scott Burns at Morrisound. That guitar tone rips. Wonder how Cynic got it.

“Human” was the beginning of the Prog death metal movement (Two of the bandmembers being from Cynic) but focus took it to a whole other level! I remember being in high school and telling everybody about that album! Great memories!

Human was NOT the beginning of prog death, that goes to Atheist’s unquestionable presence

It’s great to hear each instrument isolated from each other. The way things are mixed the guitars blended seamlessly so it’s harder to hear the nuances of each player especially on parts like this. Hearing this is like a whole new song to me even though I’ve listened to this song countless times over 20 years....

This video is EVERYTHING to me! I was 14 when “Focus” came out and it is the ONLY reason I play drums professionally to this day. Seeing this clip after all this time only reinforces the fact that Cynic was light years ahead of everyone!

I’ve been dreaming about footage of the recording of Focus since it came out, and here I run into this on a random Tuesday..
Thanks so much Jason, if ever there are ways to find more like this I think it will have tremendous value for lots of true fans (i.e. Focus fans, when Cynic was Cynic..).
Jason never gave in any of what Cynic sadly became, he left before that, and him leaving was enough for Cynic to be done permanently. Of all the guys who created this unique piece of metal (I remember I knew instantly my journey was complete when I first heard it back in the day), Jason will always have a special place, the truest of all.

Thank you for sharing this, Jason. This album with zero hyperbole changed my life, both musically and Spiritually, and I am eternally grateful for that. I agree that the music took a few listens to catch on, but even on my first listen, it still FELT right, it somehow made sense to my ears intuitively, even though I couldn't yet comprehend it. The more that I listened, the more that the music revealed itself to me. I remember specifically when I heard the synth outro to Eagle Nature for the first time was the exact moment when my mind was blown completely open, to where I actually began to weep at the otherworldly beauty I was experiencing. It was overwhelming, and I'm convinced that the transformational art that you all created directly channeled the Divine. Love and Light to you and yours! 🙏💗🌎
