  • Build yourself a pivoting "porkchop" style blade guard for your wide bed jointer that came with a European-style blade guard.

Well designed and well built, nice work as always Frank. Give the boys a pat from Australia please.

A wonderful project. Look forward to whatever’s up next next week or next video. Great job.

The piece that goes around the guard and hangs down could be made out off wood. No issues if it did contact the cutter head and would not beat up your cast iron fence.

Frank it appears that the blade guard might flex enough out at the end, near the fence to hit the blade if enough pressure were applied. Maybe?

If the blade guard was built triangular, like the piece you made for the mount, it would cover the knives while in use but not stick out beyond the machine so far.

The purpose of having a rounded guard is, while pushing a board through. it keeps most of the rest of the cutter covered. If you went with a narrower profile, as you push it with a board at the fence, it will uncover much more of the cutter head.

Totally agree Frank, I prefer the type you made and I might do the same. I took the other type off mine 20 years ago and have been using it without, I never even thought of making one like you did, I kept seeing them on various American shows, but it never dawned on me to make one. I have no idea why they don't use that type in the UK. Just a thought, could the actual guard not be 1/2 plywood?

Frank, are you gonna take the arm from the old new guard off. It seems to serve no purpose.....
