- Trackmania (2020) reviewed by Alex Santa Maria on PC. Trackmania modernizes the series' signature speedy time trials, but its off-putting subscription model may limit the creative energy that fuels its best moments.

"I really don't know what to say about this game"
7/10 - IGN
"It really feels like a glorified demo" really sums it up.
@@jacoblyalls4026 the game speaks for itself. It's a hardcore time trial racing game.. like all the other trackmanias, and an updated trackmania nations. The most competitive one. So I don't see how this is a hot pile of garbage lol.
@@jacoblyalls4026 and that's what the competitive community wanted. You may not like it, and that's fine. But to say it's a pile of garbage and to criticize the game for what demographic they were going after is silly. It nailed that target. You just weren't apart of it.
@@jacoblyalls4026 But people play stadium and not turbo. Whatever you think you are thinking right, you are wrong...
@@jacoblyalls4026 debate me bro
Now that I've played the game, I have one criticism/question about this review: "Unfortunately Trackmania has never explained its self particularly well"
The tutorial has a list of 20 tracks where each track clearly shows off a certain element in the game, like boost pads or slow motion pads etc. What else should there be? I just don't see any need for any more explanation than there is. Same thing in all Trackmanias I've played in the past - it's a kinda minimalistic racing game, where the goal is to just... reach the goal fast. Drive and find out the advanced tricks on the way yourself.
Yeah, for fu#*$ sake, not every game has to hold your underdeveloped hand! TRIAL AND ERROR!!! That is how you learn. If you fail, go of the track, crash, you just restart and go again. That's the point. GIT GUD!!
Honestly, it's people like IGN that make me wish for a Nuclear Winter...
It's like a puzzle for the community.
It is not a clear downside.
@@lordwafflesthegreat Ikr? They even made a song of this crash-repeat-success concept in older trackmania ( "TM Sunrise - Fill Your Pages " ). I still have the bad taste for tutorials after Doom Eternal where they explained directly how to defeat a boss.... I mean, wtf? Is figuring simple stuff out by yourself that difficult?
- it's a kinda minimalistic racing game, where the goal is to just... reach the goal fast. Drive and find out the advanced tricks on the way yourself.
But that's what makes Trackmania interesting and differ from other games
I think he means tech like speed for drift, drifting, neo sliding, wiggling, no air time theory, etc. that the game doesn't teach you.
There's just something not right about watching an IGN review of a racing game not by Luke Reilly
Lmao, yeah. Although the verdict summed up my feeling with this game (and 7 is a pretty fair score for me) but it lacked Luke's depth of coverage. The footage just felt like it was only explored on the surface level.
Small FYI there is splitscreen up to 4 players in this game
is the hotseat available?
@@standafaces also hot seat and splitscreen with different game modes
Yasss!!!
Great. The series shouldve had that since the beginning tho
Nice!
70$ game that you play for 50 hours and then never touch again: nice.
10$ a year game with infinite replayability: apparently not nice.
🤷♂️
Yeah I actually love the business model. You can play all the tracks on offer and get a type of track editor - all for completely free! Then for just $10 a year, you get the full editor and a few other benefits, with the full-blown Esports version a fairly reasonable $30 a year. Great value imo
well it doesnt look so great compared to the old games which are $10 one-time payment and have more maps than this one will probably ever have, as-well-as the ability to save your damn custom tracks
I'm sure ubisoft are happy that delusional players like you love the business model
@@juliantaffa4089 Nations had everything for free. You get played with this one. You know it, Nadeo knows it and Ubisoft knows it. Keep supporting this trash and enjoy the "bright" future of gaming.
@@ImHere4Nothing nations is probably a better choice for new players but its not fit for current esports that is probably the biggest reason they made the new game.
@Catalin M The issue isnt that it is a subscription but that UbiSoft said it wasn't a subscription but a game you bought every year for a year and definitely not a subscription.
Hidden mechanics are hidden for purpose...It's no fun to learn everything in tutorials. You must learn things & master it
This and you're not on your own, there is a community eager to help you master them ._.
@@Jayasinleno Tutorial nosebug or uberbug map can you imagine? xd
For the intended mechanics I can imagine though, like gears.
@@Jayasinleno yep, maybe we can ask for it in the forums. There are tutorial maps of some sort I've heard, if these mechanics aren't covered maybe they'll listen to our feedback
Secrets is fun mechanic. But secrets that are essential for completing the level or the game, and are not explained anyhow - now that's a bad design
Imagine Jeff from F1 to yell in your ear every second that you're going off from the ideal lane in this game... It's supposed to be simple! You need to explore your way to find the greatest time or short as you said "You must learn things & master it", is very well put!

I remember i used to make tracks all day with this. Surprised to see it again, as I played this like 10 years ago
It'd be great for y'all to re-review this as it was re-released on steam and has had 2 years of updates since then!
And it came out on consoles too!
Strange that it’s not on consoles, Trackmania Turbo is great fun and even has PSVR support
To be fair, it's on the Nintendo DS!
Trackmania Turbo?
Yeah, i'd love console releases if only for the possibility of not having to log on through their launcher every time just to play.
Love the Turbo.
Nadeos CEO talked about maybe releasing the games on the new console generation, if and only if they get full cross-platform support.
It really makes you feel like a track
7/10 - IGN
Lol bro :)
Really excited for this! This series seriously deserves more recognition that it currently has
Ikr
agreed
Trackmania, CoD, Chess are the only games I can play all the time!
The subscription model is fine, it's a game as a service with constant new official tracks added every season. It's relatively inexpensive when new games are 90$ CAD nowadays.
Man, this really makes you FEEL like a stick on wheels
"It has a little something for everyone."

I dont understand why anyone would complain about the tutorial, I think it was perfect, it didnt hold your hand but it also didnt throw anything huge in your face immediately, it slowly integrated all the games mechanics into the levels.
but the thing is that there are way more mechanics in the game than just the different road surfaces you need to drive on. For example gears. It doesn't explain (to my knowledge) anything about gears in the game or why they're important.
This game is not just a remake. The more you play and get to know of its features, the more you will enjoy it. Especially: There will be big eSports tournaments!
Who cares about those lmao
The reason for them calling it a remake is that the Devs openly said they see this as a remake of TMNF
@@MrChuck78929 I do actually. As does the community. Trackmania was initally created for esport.
Free version is useless, I can't even join servers 😑
@@AgentSmith911 We should not always compare new iterations of Trackmania with Trackmania nations forever. TMNF was probably supposed to let the world know of the trackmania franchise. You cannot always make everything f2p unless it's fortnite & co. :)
If you can test the gameplay of the game (which determines whether you like a game or not), then the free version is totally sufficient in my opinion ;)
tried this game and it's addictive AF can't stop playing it!

I tried it, it's alright. United will always be my favourite with all the different environments.
Very silly to call the subscription bad... It's $10 a year to play online ($30 to edit). Way cheaper than the games are to purchase usually, and they're supporting it in a more meaningful way now - new daily tracks, more updates and developer tracks that you keep after your sub ends etc. Lots of things worth the small cost.
You own a console don't you
@@spongeboimebob yes he does
If most of the content is locked behind a tiered subscription service Ubisoft can get lost.
You've got to love innovative greed in modern gaming, most publishers will probably adopt this in the future as well, just you watch, if they can't farm kids for that loot box money or money through other types of gambling crap in future because of new laws being implemented in big parts of the world other gambling in games, they will go with the subscription services and completely ruin proper gaming.
did you come here from yong yea or jim sterling?
Does anyone know what happened to Modnation Racers? It was probably my most-played game on PSP. A shame there wasn’t a PS4 version
Nobody talks about bloody modnation racers anymore and that saddens me big time.
It was great on PS3 too! Although the loading times were horrible and you had to fight constant frame drops. I would love a new Modnation Racers on PC, though!
It was such a great game. It was basically a combination of TrackMania and Mario Kart. If something like this would come out now with the minimalistic style of games like Valorant and Fortnite you could make billions of dollars with it.
@@JoeSchaller Aye, I played it on both and the framerate bothered me on PS3 but I loved it big time
10/10 it has a track
Wait, so can you play private (with your friends only) without one of the subscriptions like standard access?
Am I the only Trackmania fan who didn't know this remake was coming?
Yes
Did you at least play one of the newer Trackmania games from the last 10 years or are you one of those "United/Nations players" that didn't support the franchise for over 10 years and claim to be a "fan" of it.
It was only by a coincidence that I heard about it so you're not the only one
@@Neox999 Great work gatekeeping a franchise just because I didn't know about a badly marketed remake
It seems they don't even have an official CZcams channel. It's insane how horrible that marekting is.
I also just stumbled upon it.
But annual subscription key is a big no for me.
I'm new to this game and I have a small question, how do I play this game online against my friends?
I just wan’t more Canyon.
A lot of the long stunt tracks made by the community are crazy awesome if you can master them!
Canyon is by far my favorite. Ive tried all of them. I want a canyon remake!
Ubisoft is the master of predatory monetization
Knowing that ubisoft is involved in this game just makes it a don't buy, just pirate.
This review brought me back to my childhood playing trackmania races with my friends 24/7 during summer
Am I the only one who thinks that this subscription model is the best thing they could've done? A company wants more than 10 bucks a year for their absolutely great game? Oh noe. How dare you.... srsly thats absolutely worth it. This game is pure fun and it has been for over 15 years now. They deserve to get some money for this.
4:30 "the subscription model raises real concerns about longevity" actually no, there is and im sure there always will be a community for trackmania, as is proven by the fact that the franchise is still alive after such a long time. the subscription model makes it possible for the developers to further improve the game, organize Esports events and support it for as long as there is interest in the game. and again to compare to TM2 stadium again: for the 10€ you get 75 official tracks. for the 10€ standard access you get the starter tracks and 100 official tracks split into 4 seasons (you also get to keep those), 365 curated user made tracks of the day and dedicated servers.
This is a cope
So if i want to play trackmania online wich games is the best and the most played now?
*Opens Epic Ganes Store Library casually*
IGN defends never talking about $$$ value for any big franchise game but for any smaller developer...
Whoever made the gameplay for this video should never touch racing games ever again
You can “nudge my jet back reactor boost” anytime 😉
I didn't even know TrackMania Nations was getting a remake.
It's Oprah season at IGN , everyone gets a 10

Thanks to this review i know what ign means now lmao
Where do you find activation key at if you want Stater Edition?!
Google it, or there should be a Reddit thread on /trackmania
if i want the game should i download it from epic games store or the ubisoft store??? please tell me what you recommend
I would recommend uplay because with epic games store, it will launch uplay anyway so buying straight from uplay skips an extra launcher. Also Nadeo get a little more money from the purchase from uplay.
J-Swag thank you :)

How can i race against my ghost PB on TrackMania Nations Remake (2020)?

Is it possible to play with friends on free acess?
Is it also planned for Series X and PS5?
yes
i feel like im back in my childhood
Gold medal? You meant green one right? Also the track editor is only for few people, it is not expected that majority will take part in making tracks. The secret behind fast times is to set up second break so you don't have to break on back arrow.
This game looks fun! I'm downloading it right now :D
Is this better than Trackmania Turbo? Graphics look a bit flat?
PLS I NEED HELPP! h
ow do i play this with my friend?? :C
this game really makes you feel like batman.
Author medals are the times you should shoot for. Not gold
It depends on your skill level. Not everyone is a Gamer™ like you.
They really shouldn't limit chat functions behind a paywall, multiplayer would be more fun with it on.
Can you play this online or with friends?
sure can. On free version you are limited to the arcade channel though. On standard you can join any server. On club edition, you can create your own lobby for friends or public to join
Why was the gameplay recorded with a potato?
The business model isn't unreasonable. It's the world's greatest demo for free, then just $10 a year for full editor and customisation, then $30 for the full Esports experience. That's great value, compare it to a $60 or $70 game you play once for like 20 or 30 hours.
So this is how you cope?
Wait- did he say this subscription fee of $10 or $30 a year a bad thing? Really? Wooooow.
But people drop $60 a year for fifa, nba, & madden. Ok Ryan. 😂
Great review, but seriously thats not a bad deal imo.
Does it have Pc spit screen?
Yes, it does.
Great game so far and standard access gives enough!
Maybe it can come to console without a subscription model someday
I guess this wasn't too bad of a review for someone who doesn't know anything about tm :)
Wait wait wait...did he say you have to have a subscription?!?
A person that doesn't know at least the basics like ign can't really commentate about a game that complicated, there goes a lot more into for example "shaving off time" than just driving it without hitting the walls, there's a lot of tricks and key combinations you need to master and much more that ign can't cover
wait till they hear about FFXIV and WoW
id think those mmo games have way more server activity going on to more justify a subscription
It keep my dog outside 10/10
Is this game Crossplay for ps4 and pc?
nope, game is only available on pc at the moment.
Alex + Ryan seem cool but this is a driving game.
If there's a car on the boxart, you summon Luke Reilly.
Man, this game, Skyrim, MW2 and counter strike defined my gaming personality
TrackMania canyon still the best
IGN, why did you kill the 60FPS?
It has a little something for everyone 10/10
But locked in a paywall made by EA 9/11
seems like ill going to stick with the og trackmania
yeah for some reason this seems cartoony to me for some reason. like they are trying to grab the attention of the fortnite kids or something?
Trackmania Nations remake but with paywalls. I don't consider going back to Trackmania Nations because it's at least better, with new mechanics, but if the monetization system were the same...(it wouldn't be an demo)
You shouldn't need actual tutorials to learn to get faster. I was able to learn to go fast on ice in one day without any special tips.
Is it available on Xbox one?
Nope, only on PC on Uplay or EGS. The devs said if the game does really well, it might come to consoles although thats not a guarantee. However they seem happy with the sales so far so who knows
I would definetely play $60 for this game once
You don't because Ubisoft is involved.
wait, there's a tutorial?
o.O
I think I’m going back to Turbo and Nations Forever
What's the size?
2gb at launch so probably around 3gb now after updates
Just wait until they get to RollerCosta XXL
Cant Wait!!!
only 11 hours to go!!!
for what, your re subscription charge?
"The game costs money" 7/10
"Oh another 60$+ that's the same as last year?" 10/10
IGN stands for imagine games network?
igonorant game noobs. lol JJ. just wouldn't recommend this one personally. trackmania 2 (in it's 3 iterations) is where it's at.
There is only one thing holding this game back:
NADEO and its 90% moron ratio
Can we play multiplayer with friends??
if you have the standard or club edition, then yes
Lighting is definitely better, but everything else is worse. I can accept new design but handling was more enjoyable in original TM Stadium.
I don't see the work of suspension here neither drifting.
Trust me, what you're saying has no sense.
@@GrattKobe Just compare with old gameplay. Fast, drifty, milder suspension
TM veteran here. The controls and physics are amazing, and I have no clue what you're on about.
I go back to Trackmania every year or so. This remake is awesome and I'm very addicted. It's worth looking into tutorials on youtube to learn tech and get faster times
Damn you Trackmania...just one more go.
You didn't even mention seasons??? They're one of the main reasons this game has a subscription model.
