  • Augustus, the first Roman Emperor had a fascinating life which was thoroughly studied by contemporary and modern historians.
A political genius, he knew very well the power coins had on passing messages to the average citizen, and he took full advantage of this tool by issuing very diverse designs during his long reign. Today, lets explore some coins issued under this fascinating character.

I like Octavian's late denarii/Augustus' early denarii, when the simple image of his portrait was struck on the obverse, reserving the clutter of his name and titles for reverse. It was his way of saying, "I am the only man left after many years of brutal civil war... let all doubt and hostility end now."

Yes! We cant judge much of how he looked like by the marble busts, as these had a fair share of "Embellishing" done on them, but it is somewhat accepted, and coins reinforce the idea, that his face was quite brutish-looking.
Particularly so if we compare him against the youthful features Augustus always had. Even as an old man, according to sources, he had a very youthful appearance

Those are fantastic examples of Augustus' coinage! I kept waiting for the end of the video for you to say where we could bid on them at an upcoming auction because these seem like showcase examples perfect for advertising a sale. I was surprised that there was no ad. Whoever owns them is very, very fortunate!

These coins come from the collection of a long-time collaborator of the channel. He´s a very kind chap, always willing to film some of his coins for a cool video.

As always, you've done a very clever and instructive video.
I personally don't collect Augustus' coins (nor do I collect imperatorial coins) , as I don't find them esthetically pleasing and they are very expensive in the kind of condition I like, but every ancient coin is highly collectible in my views. These ones just don't belong to my subjective criterias, but this period is pretty much a revolution in the Ancient world, a revolution coins document very well.

      Thanks glad you liked it!
Indeed, I mostly collect roman imperials, but the later republican coinage and in particular the imperatorial types are really interesting. Not only the widespread use of political propaganda is very visible, which would result on the imperial coinage so commonly reinforcing the imperial cult, but the overall design choices of the time were very varied, resulting on some out-of-the-box designs you seldom find on later imperial coins.
