  • Neutral Density filters are far from "neutral". They cause color shifts, contrast issues and of course sharpness reduction, so how do you figure out which ones are right for your photo and video images? Will Crockett knows ND filters are tricky little devils and that many photographers are intimidated by them. He's been using them for over 35 years on 4x5 view cameras, medium format film and digital cameras, and even more on today's dSLR's and mirrorless cameras. Will is more than happy to share the pro-level tips that all hybrid shooters should learn as he de-mystifies everything you need to know about choosing, using, and avoiding trouble from neutral density filters.
Also included are Will four recommended brands of ND filters and one brand to avoid at all costs.
Will Crockett is a semi-retired commercial hybrid photographer with a deep pedigree created by assignments from Time, People and TV Guide, Boeing, United Airlines, McDonalds and even a few US Presidents. You may recognize him from the 200+ live seminar events as the primary presenter for Fujifilm, and from the more than 30 photo DVD titles sold thru camera stores across the globe under the ShootSmarter brand.
Will now lives in the central coast of California.

I used to shoot film with my dad’s Bolex movie cameras. Both the 16mm and 8mm had a little pull out gelatin holder. A 4x4 sheet of filter went a loooong way.

Hey Fred! I remember those too! I loved my little Bolex until the main spring snapped and my Dad didn't want to get it fixed so... I "borrowed" his Nikon FTN with one 50mm ƒ2.8 lens when I was maybe 12. That's what kicked off my photo career. If that Bolex would have never broken I might have been a cine guy instead of a photo guy. Thanks Fred.

Thanks John, I plan to continue with my style of "technical" info. So glad you like it. I'm almost done editing the VND Calibration video and it should be ready next week. I appreciate your kind words. - Will

@@HybridphotoPro I'll look forward to that! I've seen so many of your videos over the past few months including a lot of your work with Mark Hauser, which was really great and I learned so much. Thanks.

Gosh, gelatin filters. That brings me back to colour correcting when shooting 4x5 and 8x10 reproduction transparencies of artwork in about 1987-8 when I worked at a pro photo lab. I had no idea that gelatins had the least image degradation.... or that glass NDs are a gelatin sandwich. Thanks for another very informative video, Will! Cheers, and keep them coming.

Hey Marlene! I had so much fun testing these again. It's been 20 years since I've worked with Gel Filters and it all came flooding back to me how much I hated using them back when I could not afford a $200 glass filter. hahaha. Glad you liked it and thanks for the great comments.
