  • I have a Garmin GPSMAP 750 which receives its AIS data from a CSB200 AIS Transceiver.
The GPSMAP 750 receives high speed NMEA 0183 data, which the CSB200 provides via one of the TX pins on the Serial cable on the back, which is then connected to one of the RX pins on the Garmin's power/data cable.
I want to look at that NMAE 0183 data on my PC/Laptop, so I can use a DB9 Serial to USB connector.
I plug it into the AIS transceiver, then plug the other end of the DB9 into my Laptops USB port, then open Putty and connect to COM3 using Baud 38400.
I then also close Putty, and open a program that can decode NMEA 0183 sentences, and that was a program called AIS Decoder from arundaleais.github.io/docs/ai...
There are many programs that people have written that can decode AIS messages. You could also write your own scripts to read data from Com ports. Sometimes, it's just easier to use what other people have already written for you.
