On the opposite end, this is easily my favorite anime. As a child I remember being awake, or at least, somewhat awake, while watch Adult Swim on the small tube TV in my room. Re-watching it as an alert adult, it was somehow more confusing. Plus, it introduced me to one of my favorite bands that became very formative in my musical taste.
that's awesome! Despite watching some Adult Swim back in the day I missed this one as a kid. Wasn't until a few years ago that I watched it for the first time. Definitely a trip that initial watch through, but its gotten a little clearer with each viewing, and it really does a lot. That's cool about the music, too!
@5:34 Atomisk isn't "dormant inside the robot." Atomisk is trapped within Medical Mechanica and can use Canti as an Avatar in a way to release his N.O. but he can only do it by using Naota as a medium to connect the two. That's why Canti swallows Naota to become Red. And at @10:20 you mention that her "jingly bracelet" is "a way to further showcase her anxieties and naivety" but the bracket is actually supposed to symbolize a pair of handcuffs that broke and atomisk was connected to the missing side, but when character design and production changed Atomisk from a man to a giant bird they instead put the other chainlink to the cuff on the upper base part of Atomisks beak. I liked your outlook on "the left side conquering the world" but i always interpreted it as being the left side of the brain Mamimi was talking about due to how it is that things come out of Naotas head in the first place
Your visual editing is totally on point! But I'd watch the gain of the audio. There is a pretty noticeable drop at 2:08, getting boosted back up at 2:36. Even if you change mic positions, you should make sure it's still roughly the same level.
Well done. I discovered FLCL around the time I was in middle school and I found Naota to be relatable. I suppose your analysis makes it clear to me as to why I was enamoured with this Anime.
Really awesome video Wally. This show has stuck with me since seeing it as a kid on Adult Swim years ago. It's a much deeper work, and you showed that.
Definitely a very trippy yet awesome and unconventional tale of growing up. I especially know how these transformations signify either growing up or coming to terms. Great video Wally.
Thank you so much man most people never understand how meaningful this anime is to the genre and hope it paved the way for so many more risk taking projects.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, Gurren Lagann wears it's heart on its sleeve. It definitely has deeper meaning and substance to it, but it's also very blatant about it in contrast to FLCL, which given how silly FLCL is will surely sound somewhat ridiculous. There aren't really hidden meanings to derive in Gurren Lagann, at least certainly not in my opinion (and these videos are just my opinions). Of course, FLCL also has some moments that are pretty obvious, but other times definitely require a bit of looking into.
Wally The Legend I highly recommend if you haven't seen it Best Guy Ever's 2-part series on Gurren Lagann, both being some of the greatest anime videos I've ever seen in their own right. Whether you want to attribute the things he says in his analysis as "deep hidden meanings" or not is up to you but either way I think they are highly entertaining and intriguing videos regardless in response to a lot of people dismissing Gurren Lagann's intelligence and themes (not saying you're doing that in particular but that's the context for his analysis).
Alright, cool! New content is always cool. I'm always open to finding someone I've never watched before only to find myself pleasantly surprised at what they make so I'll add those vids to my backlog and check 'em out sometime! I loved Gurren Lagann when I watched it, but a refresher on it in the form of some analysis could be fun.
Love the way this video plays out, and, oddly enough, this feels like something that would be played during Toonami. I mean, not in its entirety, because that's 17 minutes of solid video, without any shows filling that runtime, but still. It's very well made, and I love the format. Especially the sleek look of all of the graphics used. Very professional.
You have a breadth of good topics here, but I worry that could have explored them a bit further. For example, the bit about the brother being left-handed and attributing that to the quote "he who conquers the left side conquers the world" is something that I never connected. I just though Mamimi was talking about the left side of the field, i.e. 2nd and 3rd base (which can also be expanded to a sexual reference, which really wouldn't be outta the wheelhouse for FLCL), so I was stoked to dig a bit with this idea! Yet, its dropped pretty abruptly. Even the frame that you use to illustrate the relationship between Naoto and his Naobro has clouds coming in from the left, obscuring the sunlight there. I mean, there's a wealth of things to gab on about here! Its a shame that some of them aren't expanded on as much as I think that you can. There's some things that I also didn't agree about, but that is the beauty of watching other people's vids, yeah? For example, I think that Canti is more a symbol of Naoto's ability "to do", becoming something that he is entirely responsible for AND can be used for the betterment of others as well as himself. BUT, I don't wanna go on about that, because, your video is your video, and if I wanna talk about all that nonsense, then I should very well just make my OWN thing about it. But therein lies the real problem with not letting your topics breathe. You gotta let your ideas fully become your ideas, and not just start them off and cut em off. Granted, there's always the risk of sounding redundant, but in "video essays" like this, some redundancy is better than holes if they serve to really convince the viewer of a certain outlook. I realize that if you were to give them the time that these topics demand, then the video might very well be double or triple the length, but I don't think that's a detriment. Your editing is so ON FUCKING POINT that a longer video would be a joy to watch, instead of a slog. I may sound like a negative nancy here, but its because you're so damn close to making things that are truly great! Still, enjoyable video, and I'm looking forward to your next slew of topics.
Yo, Scrib. Thank you for this comment, man. You're the best. I totally see what you mean with some of this, and funnily enough I actually really worried about making TOO LONG of a video because I realized I could spend so much time on this. I think I even have a tweet from a month or two back hinting at exactly this. I guess I gotta learn to trust myself more and just go for it even if the video ends up being crazy long, because you're right: there's SO much to say about this anime. Its crazy. I appreciate all the thoughts and compliments. I'll have to take this into consideration going forward. I'm at least really happy that you enjoyed my editing. I feel that's a strong suit of mine, and something that I can fall back to - despite the amount of time it might take to put together. Again, the thoughts are much appreciated, brother. Thank you!
I just watched FLCL for the first time this weekend, a very interesting and intriguing show. There's a lot to uncover from the show, but the thing that caught my eye the most was the color palette. It is the most colorful and beautiful anime I have ever seen! It is amazing, and I am for sure going to watch FLCL Progressive and FLCL Alternative when they start coming out! Great analysis! I've looked through many analyses on this show this past weekend as well, seeing everyone's perspective on this random and deep show.
Dude... I re-watched this awesome anime again earlier this year thinking I caught everything my younger self didn't when I first saw it on Adult Swim back in the day. But your video essay broke down a lot of things I didn't realize. Good stuff bro, keep it up!
Well, I'm glad I could help elaborate on some things! There's definitely some other great articles out there on FLCL concerning stuff I didn't get into. Amazing how much there is to decipher when you look into the details. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it.
"A video essay on one of my favorite series, awesome!" "Whoa hey this editing style is pretty cool" "Oh fuck he's pulling out the Nujabes" Amazing how you got me to subscribe before you even said anything.
The pillows deffinatly made flcl so much better... and the kind of pop art during the fight scenes catch your eye... got to learn to accept yourself and be yourself and swing the bat and aim for the stars. Everything is hit or miss....
thank you very much! Glad ya liked it. If I can get at least one person hankering to go back and watch it again or check it out for the first time I'll feel pretty happy about it.
The last time I watched this was about ten years ago, now hankering is not a verb I would usually use, but... yeah. That. Great video. This pure passion commentary is wonderful and the stepped up presentation is all the more delightful. I wanted something to listen to while I was multitasking but this video was too well edited to take my eyes off it and I really couldn't get anything else done for 17 minutes *shake fist*
Having been told my passion was seemingly waning recently, I'm really glad to hear that someone thinks the opposite. That's especially high praise that I could keep your attention for the whole video! Thanks!
Hey! I finally got around to checking out the series, and I thought it was great! Thank you so much for reviewing it, and doing a great job at that! :)
As the commentary from Tsurumaki on the DVDs says, what Mamimi says ("He who conquers the left side conquers the world") is a quote from Ashita no Joe. She applies it to baseball instead of boxing and sort of misquotes it. It's supposed to establish her as "sort of ditzy." The significance, in Tsurumaki's mind, is that left-handed characters are perceived differently than right handed characters. Mamimi is trying to swing like a lefty, but she's a righty. Naota, too, is a righty. Tasuku is a lefty, which is possibly only significant if because what gets Naota to warm up towards Haruko was her left-handed, well-placed swing at the end of the first episode. That said, Tsurumaki doesn't seem to put much of a significant stake in it, it's more theming and flavor. It was interesting to hear you refer to Haruko as a stand-in mother-figure, if just because, to me, it seems that his feelings are weird and complex towards her. She reminds him of his brother, and he's really looking for that relationship, but he's on the cusp of puberty and she makes inappropriate advances towards him through the show. Haruko is, in some ways, to Naota what Naota is to Mamimi: An inappropriate relationship meant to stand in for the void Tasuku left in their lives. Naota looked up to Tasuku, but doesn't really think highly of his grandfather or his dad. He then looked up to Haruko, who took advantage of this relationship to get what she wanted. Naota gets caught up in some sexual or romantic situations throughout the show, but is possibly just acting how he thinks he should. How he's been conditioned to do so. Mamimi using him as a replacement and Haruko using him as a means to an end aren't exactly healthy introductions to romance. How he acts towards them seems to be how he thinks he is supposed to. When Haruko returns after having left, though, Naota breaks down and cries, burying his face on her, wondering how she could just leave like that. He stops putting up a front. He removes his metaphorical eyebrows (note: when Haruko is reintroduced, Naota's actual fake eyebrows from Amarao fall off) and shows how he genuinely feels. He needs someone to open up to. He wants someone who he can connect to who isn't just going to leave like Tasuku did. There is a lot that could be said, I guess. I dunno. I feel like you were hitting on some good stuff that you maybe wanted to go deeper on but didn't for the sake of keeping the video brief? I don't think this kind of analysis should worry too much about brevity, though. I think it should be as long as it needs to be to deliver. One of my favorite bits of analysis is one of Cowboy Bebop that goes episode-by-episode and by the end points itself out as longer than certain (short) novels... Sorry if this feels like unsolicited criticism or advice or something. I just wanted to dump a little bit of the contents of my brain that was stirred up by the video. Thanks for making it!
Nah, you absolutely have a point about it being as long as it needs to be to get one's points across effectively. I guess I chose to not include some bits because I still have some fear of having too long of a video. Hell, I made a tweet about during the process when I realized I had SO much I could talk about that the video could've easily been a good bit longer than it already was. Maybe I should've explored further. All the stuff you said it something that at one point I thought about getting into and didn't. I should've just gone for it, as a lot of this is only further great points to include in the discussion. And seriously, no need to apologize. This is all really great! If anything I'm still really happy that my video was I guess compelling enough that you felt the need to type this all up!
After showing some friends of mind FLCL, I was disheartened by their lack of enthusiasm or enjoyment of it. I was starting to worry that maybe the show I liked was vapid and aimless. You have found the words I could not to describe what it is FLCL does so well, and restored my faith in my own taste. Thank you.
I don't really like FLCL, I couldn't get down with the disjointed way it presented itself, but this vid helped me find an appreciation that I couldn't bring myself to have beforehand. Don't exactly like it, but I can respect it more.
Just a piece of advice, growing up and love are not considered theme statements when conducting a thesis and essays using those kinds of theme statements in writting usually tend to fail in English classes. A good theme statement usually has a cause and effect structure such as "the use of x causes y to change."
It certainly took a lot of time and effort! Although I admittedly didn't work as hard as I could've at times, but there were plenty of times where real life stuff was a hindrance. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it!
Regarding the quote “he who conquers the left side conquers the world” I would also note that it’s a metaphor for right left brain function dynamics . Also in that scene naota points out that mamimi has her hands upside down for a left handed swing technically also showing that she’s (for lack of a better term) full of shit lol
Really glad to hear that! It never does as well as gaming stuff, which I expect, but sometimes I worry it isn't gonna hit that well. Seeing comments like this is nice!
thanks for the kind words! And sorry about that. I've been struggling to keep motivated in the past few months so I've slowed down a lot. If I could put out videos of the kind of quality I want at a much better pace I would. I guess we'll see how this next one goes. If I can get it out sooner I will!
Wally The Legend Often with series I do start to feel like it's such a job to get through. And I'm fairly certain most series really would've been better if they were shorter, and especially with anime it has been very discouraging to even start.
When I saw FLCL or the first time in 2001 I wonder if I was the only person amongst friends who truly adore this anime. Came 2018 and yes I'm not alone. Will we be here again in 2030 to celebrate lack of anime that can rivals its cult status?
Well dang, thank you very much! And I'd have to watch it all first before I can talk about it! HxH is in my watchlist at least, so I'll get around to it eventually.
Sure! I can't guarantee I'll watch any recommendations in a timely matter (or I suppose at all for that matter), but having more stuff on the backburner isn't the worst thing in the world.
Maybe! I haven't see it yet so I wouldn't have anything to say, but I won't rule the possibility out. I'm glad you like my reviews, though! That's always nice to hear.
I felt the new series were okay... however I think the disconnection from the main characters inner thoughts in the progressive/alternitive animes is a narritive style breakaway that makes the main focus characters seem unreflective and flat : (
For instance, "nothing ever happens here" to looking board and putting on headphones. I like the character design and could even be interested in the new main character but the change in writing style is hard to let go of.
I thought that the action was one of the weaker parts of the show. Even when I first saw it, not that it's bad at all but the character development and interactions we're just that good in my opinion.
Just a piece of advice, growing up and love are not considered theme statements when conducting a thesis and essays using those kinds of theme statements in writting usually tend to fail in English classes. A good theme statement usually has a cause and effect structure such as "the use of x causes y to change."
+Casual Friday Nights I know ;) just pointing out that it's silly to stipulate on things of that nature when it's on CZcams, a platform that's supposed to give people room to be as free form as they please (it's not school, ya know?) and thanks man haha
I really wanted a Vespa because of FLCL
get a Lambretta
I wanted to learn how to play a guitar after FLCL
Wanted? Im still wanting one with those sick goggles
Your editing is always on point bro, even if I have no idea about the subject matter, you always deliver on the tight visuals.
thanks, Snoman! Its always nice to know that even if the subject might not be to everyone's liking that I can at least deliver an interesting video.
Your visual editing is totally on point! But I'd watch the gain of the audio. There is a pretty noticeable drop at 2:08, getting boosted back up at 2:36. Even if you change mic positions, you should make sure it's still roughly the same level.
I can't believe this only has 5k views. This is gold.
Well done. I discovered FLCL around the time I was in middle school and I found Naota to be relatable. I suppose your analysis makes it clear to me as to why I was enamoured with this Anime.
This is, by far, the best analysis of FLCL I've ever come across. Kudos!
I appreciate the kind words! Thanks for watching
Great to hear an analysis of FLCL this deep, especially the section on The Pillows' composition. You hit a grand slam. Wally. Awesome work.
Really awesome video Wally. This show has stuck with me since seeing it as a kid on Adult Swim years ago. It's a much deeper work, and you showed that.

It's a good video! Let that be unambiguously stated. Thanks for taking the time to read my reply.
Thank you.
I still look back to this
I don't really like FLCL, I couldn't get down with the disjointed way it presented itself, but this vid helped me find an appreciation that I couldn't bring myself to have beforehand.
I just hope the new seasons can keep all of...THIS up
this editing is god tier
Whoa, thanks so much!
Thumbs up for Carry the Zero in the outro.
Wally , i m your biggest fan !
Please make videos more often ! (if possible)
I'll try my best to not take 3 months to make another one!
Jesus just thinking about all the work put into this video makes me tired. Great job as always!
It certainly took a lot of time and effort! Although I admittedly didn't work as hard as I could've at times, but there were plenty of times where real life stuff was a hindrance. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it!
First video i've seen from you, really enjoy it though :) will have to look through your other stuff. Keep it up dude
Thank you very much! I hope you enjoy the other videos. And I'll try my best!
very solid analysis deserves way more views
That's kind of you to say. Thanks for watching!
Regarding the quote “he who conquers the left side conquers the world” I would also note that it’s a metaphor for right left brain function dynamics . Also in that scene naota points out that mamimi has her hands upside down for a left handed swing technically also showing that she’s (for lack of a better term) full of shit lol
Great video as usual Ian
hey, man. Thanks a bunch!
Great work man! Keep it up!
thank you!
Really liked this video! You’ve earned a subscriber man👍🏾
Thanks very much! Glad you liked it!
I love FLCL! It’s my favorite anime!!!! Great video!!
Nice work. Nice Built to Spill.
kaptain kristian makes a flcl vid
wally the legend also makes a flcl vid
is it a thing now?
Never heard of kaptain kristian.
i love your anime stuff.
Really glad to hear that! It never does as well as gaming stuff, which I expect, but sometimes I worry it isn't gonna hit that well. Seeing comments like this is nice!
almost everything you said is on point except her leaving the guitar. She only left it because it was a piece of crap and she has the doubleneck now
You're a good writer dude
Means a lot, friend. I've always loved writing but its nice to hear from someone that they think its a strength of mine. Thanks again.
10/10 on this video
dang, thanks!
Is that Built to Spill I hear at the end ;) Great video btw
it sure is! And thanks!
All of your videos are so well done. I wish you uploaded more!
thanks for the kind words! And sorry about that. I've been struggling to keep motivated in the past few months so I've slowed down a lot. If I could put out videos of the kind of quality I want at a much better pace I would. I guess we'll see how this next one goes. If I can get it out sooner I will!
Well, I'll be waiting eagerly for the next one. It is best to take your time but until then, keep up the awesome work, man! :)
The entire thing is only 2,5 hours? That makes it a whole lot more interesting to watch...
Like I said, its a hyper-compressed insane deconstructed tale about growing up. Once it gets going it doesn't really let up.
Wally The Legend
Often with series I do start to feel like it's such a job to get through. And I'm fairly certain most series really would've been better if they were shorter, and especially with anime it has been very discouraging to even start.
well, hopefully just 6 episodes will be a lot more manageable for ya if you decide to give it a watch!
Wally The Legend
Totally!
I'm just getting tired of series where in the first two hours barely anything happens after the very first set up.
Hello are you kaptainkristain before kaptainkristain was around?
Definitely not. I have no idea who that is.
If you're gonna keep up this vibe in more videos, I'm so IN!
LIKED AND SUBSCRIBED
*_EVEN HIT THE BELL_*
flcl is my fav show
trying to watch this in a noisy ass classroom was hell
When I saw FLCL or the first time in 2001 I wonder if I was the only person amongst friends who truly adore this anime. Came 2018 and yes I'm not alone. Will we be here again in 2030 to celebrate lack of anime that can rivals its cult status?
Best review of flcl tbh. You should cover Hunter x Hunter 2011
Well dang, thank you very much! And I'd have to watch it all first before I can talk about it! HxH is in my watchlist at least, so I'll get around to it eventually.
Wally The Legend
Coolness
Naota here um I hated the pause scenes that are slow mo sometimes u have to hold your breath it was a hard time 😆
Do you take recommendations for anime?
Sure! I can't guarantee I'll watch any recommendations in a timely matter (or I suppose at all for that matter), but having more stuff on the backburner isn't the worst thing in the world.
Wally The Legend Ashita no Joe, though its age and concept initially turn people off it'sa pillar of the medium for good reason
Hey will you doing another review on progressive it sucks but I just like your reviews
Maybe! I haven't see it yet so I wouldn't have anything to say, but I won't rule the possibility out. I'm glad you like my reviews, though! That's always nice to hear.
Why does every FLCL video essay voice sound like they actually characters in the anime
16:33 what is that song?
czcams.com/video/3-f7zsW7EV4/video.html
What is this intro song?
Some nujabes somg forgot what, its from tbe album model soul
I thought that the action was one of the weaker parts of the show. Even when I first saw it, not that it's bad at all but the character development and interactions we're just that good in my opinion.
Have you ever watched Durarara or Baccano? They're really good! :)
Haven't watched Baccano yet but I've watched all of Durarara and I loved it. I kinda wanna make a video on it at some point haha
any spoilers??????
With the new flcl thats not the reason why shes 19 forever.
I have tried multiple times to watch/read this show and in my opinion FLCL is complete garbage
Well that's a bummer! Sorry it hasn't been to your liking.

I mean...neglecting punctuation probably wouldn't go over well either, but that's not stopping you.
+gillythekid Sorry about that, I really wasn't trying to be rude or anything. (Also, love your videos gilly, keep up the good work)
+Casual Friday Nights I know ;) just pointing out that it's silly to stipulate on things of that nature when it's on CZcams, a platform that's supposed to give people room to be as free form as they please (it's not school, ya know?) and thanks man haha
+gillythekid Alright, thanks man.
