How Do Medieval Clothes Hold Up in the Rain?

  • ‪@mmclaug907‬ asks, how will my medieval hood hold up in the rain? So I decided to give it a test. Longer video coming out later this week with a debrief on the results and a comparison to modern day clothing.
My hair was still completely dry, and I would have to guess that had my hood been longer in the back, I would have been much drier overall as the water wouldn't have gotten in the back of my dress. Food for thought to potentially make another longer hood.

I recently discovered historic costuming, which then introduced me to linen and wool. Linen and wool are AMAZING to work with and wear. I was stunned by how quickly it dries!

Yes! I love how quick they dry. Even by the time I walked inside from filming this it was already much drier.

The length of the hood in back would also help prevent sunburns of all that tender exposed skin!

    Hey that's me!
What a tremendous response - this reminds me of the ALS ice bucket challenge. Thank you for testing this out!
Here's to longer hoods and Medieval dryness

It was very fun to test out! I'm going to do a longer video to compare it to modern clothing.

We were caught in a gigantic thunder storm at a huge reenactment event for this period last summer, all our clothes held up amazingly!

Hmmm.... suddenly the size and shape of hoods makes a whole lot more sense. Those funny looking pointy ends, especially.
I'm guessing, the amount and kind of processessing, wool has gone through, also is a factor. Although dying probably always completely removes the lanolin and stuff?
I wouldn't be surprised, if a wool cloak made from tightly woven, undyed wool is much more water repellent, still.
And now I want one 😅

I think you might be right about the undyed wool. I have a very felted wool which I wore as a cloak and it is also a heavy coat weight, and I wore it in the rain to walk half a mile to the store and back, and while the outside got wet, the underneath clothes were all dry. I took a little bit of video on it that I think I will post.

This is really cute... good quality wool will repel water for a while, and even if it does get wet, it still stays warm. 😊

Yes so cozy! It is getting to be cool weather here finally and I am looking forward to wearing all my cozy wool outfits. Especially if there is rain.
