It was nearly fifty years ago this World Cup group three match between the then reigning World Cup champions England and Brazil took place at the Jalisco Stadium in Guadahajara.
It was a match billed as the "Clash of Titans" to decide who would top the group to avoid meeting the high scoring West Germany in the quarter finals at Leon.
England skippered by the late Bobby Moore the previous summer had lost to the Brazilians 2-1 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro when the 1966 World Cup champions toured South America as part of their World Cup preparations. It was late goals from Tostao and Jairzinho that enabled Joao Saldanha's men to win after they had trailed by a Colin Bell penalty.
As such Sir Alf Ramsey's men were thirsting and gunning for revenge. In fact the England team that defended the Jules Rimet in 1970 in Mexico were much stronger and better equipped than the team that triumphed at Wembley four years earlier.
Brazil touted as the favourites in Mexico had to do without their midfield maestro Gerson who was injured.Paulo Cesar Lima took his place.
It was a hot and humid afternoon when England battled out with the brilliant Brazilians.
England had their chances but Alan Ball and Jeff Astle missed the simplest of chances.
But the match would be remembered for the save the late Gordon Banks made against Pele.Pele's point blank header was a sure goal after Jairzinho had centred from the right. But Banks from no where like a gazelle punched the ball over the bar.It was billed as the finest save in Association Football.
And the late Bobby Moore very much the better player he was in 1966 made a perfect first timed tackle to deny Jairzinho after the latter had burst through from the right flank at great speed.Even Roberto Rivelino commented years after that he had never expected Moore to make such a perfect world class tackle.
All said and done by the hour Brazil won with the only goal from Jairzinho.
It was perhaps the hardest match the Brazilians had faced and it was England who had provided the stiffest challenge to the eventual champions.Had England not lost to.West Germany at Leon it would and could have been an England versus Brazil final.Who knows England may and could have beaten Brazil.

This was arguably one of the greatest match in World Cup history The England versus Brazil at the Jalisco Stadium in Gualajahara was akin to the final itself. It was an injustice that England as the Cup holders and Brazil as the tournament favourites should be paired together.
Playing in the sweltering heat in the afternoon both teams gave away nothing.
Skipper Bobby was at his best and in his element. His perfect well timed tackle on Jairzinho when the latter was bursting at high speed and won the ball was the highlight of the 1970 World Cup.
The other was the "Save of the Century" from goalkeeper Gordon Banks whose saved from Pele's point blank header that was almost a sure goal was the finest save in Association Football.Leaping like a gazelle,Pele met Jairzinho's cross but out of no where Banks fisted the ball over the bar.Even Roberto Rivelino who featured in that historic match recalled in later years that he had not seen a miraculous save as Bank's.
Yes that match would go down as one of the greatest match in World Cup history and the 1970 World Cup encounter between England and Brazil now is even worth recalling as it is an all time classic.

If ever Brazil had the toughest match in the 1970 World Cup finals in Mexico it was this Group 3 encounter with holders England at the Jalisco Stadium in Gualajahara.
Brazil except for the injured midfield maestro Gerson Oliveira Nunes fielded their best side.Paula Cesar Lima played instead.
It was acclaimed as the best match of the tournament with both teams giving nothing away.
England had several chances to score with Alan Ball's shot skimming the bar and Jeff Astle's shooting wide in a one to one situation with Felix.
And we have two unforgettable moments.
Skipper Bobby Moore's perfect well timed tackle that prevented Jairzinho from bursting through at top speed on the right wing and Gordon Bank's miraculous and the "Save of the Century" from a Pele's point blank header and almost certain goal.
England gave all they had under the severe hot sun that afternoon but was beaten by a Jairzinho just past the hour mark.
Later even Robert Rivelino remarked recalling that match he just cannot believed that Banks could have made that save from Pele.

This England v Brazil game was one of the greatest and most relentlessly competitive and exciting football games of all time, whether international or club. Played in extreme 40 degree heat and at very high altitude, it was nevertheless played at tremendous pace and never slackened. It had everything except lots of goals and was marred only by England’s failure to convert some very good chances. It had lots of opportunities, possibly the greatest save of all time (or the flukiest) by Gordon Banks. It was Bobby Moore’s greatest game for England and in which he made his best ever tackle (v Jairzinho in the 2nd half). And Jairzinho’s winning goal was perhaps even better than the one by Carlos Alberto in the final, which was just the coup de grace against an exhausted and already beaten Italian team. Though it must be said that Tostao’s hand-off of Alan Mullery leading to the goal was technically a foul and should have been penalized. They weren’t playing rugby.
