- IMPORTANT TIPS FOR PRE-WASHING AND POST-WASHING THE HAIR: Color sits on the hair better when it is UN-washed. She didn't wash her hair two days prior to coloring it. The natural oils in the hair soak up the color better than freshly washed hair.
When she washed the color out she ONLY USES CONDITIONER. After coloring the hair (no matter what) it will be very fragile and somewhat damaged. Wait 1-2 days before using shampoo so the color doesn't fade as fast :)

Hey guys! I decided to put a video up on how to dye hair at home using something other than box dye because we try and keep her hair as HEALTHY as possible. I'm not a professional but i've been doing this for my mom for 4 or 5 years every couple of months.

If you are just doing a root touch up, there is no need to do all of the ends every time you dye the hair. This will cause extra damage and make the hair more fragile. If you need to touch up colour on the shaft then I would recommend using a demi-permanent to refresh the colour. This is less damaging and adds great shine.
aveno66 After dying your hair, washing and then rinsing, use coconut oil to moisturize. Coat your hair with it and wrap in a damp, warm towel, for about an hour and the wash, rinse and condition as usual. That's what I do and it really helps. Actually, try doing the coconut oil about once a week, if possible. Arrange oil is good to use too! :)

Thank you for teaching me how to color hair correctly. I've been doing it wrong for over a decade! But since my hair is fairly long, I drafted my husband to do the job. Now he'll know how to do it correctly not my old wrong way! In appreciation for your help, I'd like to share something with you. In tech school (high school) I took cosmetology (but despised the teacher so I changed majors the next semester). However, I did learn something about terminology. It was drilled into my head that you don't dye hair, you dye Easter eggs! You COLOR hair. And you don't pluck eye brows, you pluck chickens. You tweeze eyebrows! THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP. I hope to never worry about putting my hair up without seeing stripes of missed hair during the coloring process!!!

Please be advised that, leaving the leftover product for the ends in the bowl for twenty to thirty mins will render the product almost ineffective and will basically stain the ends, which causes more frequent dying. Once that product is mixed, the ammonia is oxidizing the hair color, also, may I recommend that you wait to mix the product for the ends, also, I feel like it's nothing but my duty as a person to inform anyone who reads this that the permanent hair dye fades just as much as Demi permanent hair dye. The only difference is permanent alters the structure of the natural hair color which basically equals DAMAGE, so if your mom is dying darker then her natural hair you should use a Demi permanent hair color. You will see that your will not have to dye any more frequent then you already are, and you can cover grays, talk to the girls at Sally's, hopefully they aren't ignorant to this information and they can guide you to good grey coverage Demi permanent hair color
Are you a licensed cosmetologist? Because if you're trying to cover gray you need a permanent color. I don't know who told you that demi permanent will cover gray but it's not true.
If you parted the hair in fours it is a lot easier. Plus, when dealing with gray/white hair it's best to mix with an "N" of the same level. So, if you're using a 4G, you should add some 4N for the gray. Since she's about 75% gray use about 1.25 oz of the N. Adding the "N" to the formula you won't need to redo the ends, just the roots, so you can save haircolor. Write down the exact formula and use the same every time with a 10 developer because you aren't trying to lift the color, just deposit it.

FYI, next time instead of running the color color on the ends. the last 10-15 minutes. add shampoo and some water and then run it through the ends. Because your just adding color on top of color and that's not good. eventually the ends are gonna get darker if you keep putting color on the ends your way.
I wanted to ask is it a good idea to put some conditioner in the bowl ? Several people on here say that helps but I'm scared to try lol. I wish I was a hairdresser because olaplex is the most talked about right now. You can get the third step but one and two can only be purchased by a licensed stylist which I don't think is fair

Well, I did my partner's hair yesterday, and Omg, it turned into a horrible, gooey, sticky MESS! I just couldn't get those clean parting lines that you do. Eventually, we managed to retrieve the situation, shampooed, and put the conditioner on, and it turned out alright in the end. We are using L'Oréal here and the final colour is lovely. I hope to do much better next time.
Ahh, thank you so much! My mom wants to go back to her natural color, but she's too nervous to do it herself and she doesn't want to go to our neighbor, so I offered to help. Our neighbor is a hairdresser, but she always does what SHE wants to do, instead of what my mom wants her to do. Hopefully we can do this during the weekend. Now I feel very confident in doing this, wish me luck!

ok. Just an fyi. there is not 2 and a half oz of color in the tube. tThere is 2.05 oz. There is a difference. So be careful when mixing. Otherwise, great video.

Olivia Biny read the instructions inside of the box the color comes in. typically is equal parts, but many brands are different so always read manufacturers instructions.
typically if you get a tube of color from sally there will be ounce markings along the tube. most gives are 2-3oz so if you use 2oz of color you will use 2oz developer I'd is equal parts. manufacturers instructions will always help clarify.

sorry but this is not professional at all. you basically placed some dye on your mom's neck, the hair strands are messed up when you were doing the strands itself and you're basically just placing all the dye in her hair feeling that the more product is used, the more it is effective..
