Introduction to Generative Fill | Adobe Photoshop
• Introduction to Genera...
Hi everyone, I just stumbled across "Design Evolution: Unlocking Adobe Photoshop's Secrets," an ebook/tutorial on Adobe Photoshop and graphic design, where they unveil features that I could not find anywhere, not even on this channel.
You uh, skipped the part where you show us how to open up the generative fill menu.
No need to open a menu, the task bar pops up automatically when you make a selection.
Hi
@@avilesrg it doesnt
How do i do it?
Simple, click on window then select contextual task bar, that’s it!
As a former photographer, I am blown away. It is scary how good it is and now we truly cannot tell between what is real and what is unreal.
I have been a professional photographer since 1981. I remember when our Kodak rep showed us the first digital head swap. That blew me away at that time. And now look where we are. This is mind-blowing. I never imagined technology could ever come to this. Exciting and scary all at the same time. Wow. I'm excited.
imaging going back in time and showing ur younger self this black magic shitery 🤣🤣🤣 crazy times

This will be the end oh photography
I love this new photoshop update it saves so much time!
and here is a tip for people, if you generate something and there are tiny faults, just use the content aware tool to work them away.
I've been working professionally with PS since 1991-92. There have been many "game changing" innovations over the decades such as content aware (among others) however adding this ability to the PS UI pretty much tops everything else. What they are showing here is pure cherry picked spin because in my real world tests the results are certainly far from perfect ( but extremely fun ). Some subjects it works very well and others are a hot mess but considering it's in its infancy 50/50+/- success rate isn't bad at all. The "expand" feature is pretty sweet. In my tests I have taken numerous "portrait" orientations and made them into "landscape"s. It's pretty amazing!
The one drawback/caveat is that I "heard" is": Adobe will charge for this feature beyond a certain base amount of "credits". For me that's a bona-fied insult to all the (professionals) who made Adobe what it is today. We're already paying a premium to subscribe to CC and now they want to "double tax" us? Adobe has done some pretty questionable and reprehensible things over the decades but (again) this is right up there at the top. I hope this time around enough people will be outraged at the money grab enough to complain and make Adobe include it with their MANDATORY subscriptions. If not I'm sure Midjourney, DAll-E or Stable Diffusion will include this feature in the (very) near future. PS. Midjourney prompts render far superior results than Firefly. Night vs Day
The unsatisfiable greed that fuels capitalism.

Adobe killer aka The Boomer? DAMN.
@@mog7293 Guess it wasn't too hard to figure out 😁
Wow! That’s wild. I have a million ideas rushing through my head for portrait work. What a time to be alive. 😍
still not perfect with groups of people, selecting all of them, selecting inverse and changing background, the people than somehow blend/merge with the new background, so while its great, its not perfect.
For everyone who is wondering (like me) you have to make a selection first for the "Generative Fill" bar to appear. ;-) So as soon as you use one of the Marquee tools, and make a selection, the bar appears.
thank you. kind of ridiculous that wasn't explained.
@@adamdrakestudio I agree. isn't that the key point of this kind of tutorial
thank you. the most important bit of info...
Also you need version 25+ for Generative Fill to be available
This is a great function to incorporate in your skills with Photoshop.. It's definitely a game changer for anyone that continually work with Photoshop... Excellent work ADOBE , im highly impressed
Adobe's Generative Fill for Photoshop is definitely one of the most amazing - and game changing - features ever added to Photoshop. The possibilities and cases for use are only limited by your imagination. Thanks, Adobe. You brought me back to Photoshop for good.
Why were you? No alternatives to PS.
Amazing! I tried and it works very well with landscapes ... less with detailed pictures
Completely agree with this, I have done a tutorial on Photoshop generative ai and have found exactly the same thing!
This is absolutely incredible
It's just amazing. I can't wait to try it.
Wow! Amazing game changing addition to photoshop. This will most definitely change a lot of things, I think when done well this could be an amazing new thing that people can use.
#mediaartssbcc
Impressive. I’ve just tried it and the results weren’t that great. Mangled background objects and horrific mutant human forms. I’m impressed here that the AI calculated the position of the sun and a reflected version of the car, that’s always been a giveaway in PS, but I noticed that the reflections in the side of the car didn’t change or pick up the ground detail.
Had exacty the same problem with generating human forms, ended up with bug eyed mutants and low res to boot. Tried removing objects, backgrounds, bad results ragged edges...etc. Not good for masking out objects either.
I think it will take some more months or even years before we can create realistic looking humans with actual real looking hands. I know midjourney made some impressive progress with this and I am sure Adobe is working hard to get there.
Was super excited but after some tries on 2D assets, it’s just horrible. Unusual atm 😢
calculating the position of the sun based on shadows isn't really hard... A child could do that.
Here's the cleaver (disingenuous) part on Adobe's behalf - the more people that use the service, the better it gets. Beta-Testers get paid nothing. Best to wait it out, let others work out the kinks.
I love Russell Brown ....best Photoshop teacher❤
Ok..... the last one blew my mind! I can' wait to play with this. Thank you so much for showing us how it works.
I remember when they showed off content aware spot healing back in the day… still trying to get the thing working properly 😂
Cool tutorial, but lacks important instruction where to locate Generative Fill. Strange v24.x does not have that feature. How to we use it, since it is not in the Menu?
Update your recent Photoshop to PS Beta and that's all!
Mindblowing...Love it
How did you get the Generative Fill bar?
Mind totally blown!
Amazing!) Thanks All Team Adobe for Work!)
Just curious. If you had added that cloud a little lower in the sky it would've been seen in the reflective pool. Would it automatically added the reflection to the pool when you made the cloud? or would you have to regenerate the pool?
It wouldn't have been automatically added. The generative fill tool can only change the areas that you have selected, so the reflection pool would have stayed the same.
Tried it, very cool stuff indeed !
Eres un genio!! Colosal tu grandeza!
Thank you for sharing this amazing technique
this new beta version does seem like a strong update. the one available to everyone even seems like the anticipation of a big change in the way we use PS
I'm excited to see what v2 looks like of the generative fill, it's amazing what we can do now as photorealistic illustrators. I'm formally proposing here, on behalf of the photographic community that Adobe Photoshop should be renamed to Photoillustration Shop or something similar. Few using these new tools in Photoshop will end up with images that resemble photographs ("light recordings") anymore. Adobe has evolved the art form and deserves credit, but should also do the right thing and align it's product's impact on the perception of veracity accordingly.
Photoshop Is a brand name, and a valuable one at that. It doesn't matter that it's not representative of what it does, because people know what it is. 3M isn't a mining company, RCA doesn't broadcast radio and MTV doesn't play music.
dude what
@@fleshwithoutblood That's obvious. But I was hoping it was obvious that I'm neither being pragmatic nor operating from the perspective of profit incentive. Instead, I was suggesting a theoretical case in which society would reconsider the categorical laziness of preserving one term or definiens, "photography", meaning a recording of light, for radically changing applications. In this case, where the recording's role becomes almost secondary to the generative content - at at least can and will under many circumstances.
@@ddacaro3625 I assure you many of us still use it to shoop their photos.
Holy crap!! This is incredible.
This is top point of all Photoshop releases..
I see generate fill but it is always grayed out .. no way to use it
That's Crazy...And I'm Loving It!!!
So, I'm seeing a fair amount of doubts on how to open this tool. If you open regular photoshop first and the you try to open the Beta version, it will only lead you back to the regular version you are already using -it should shut down the one you opened first or open both at the same time but it won't-. You need to open the Beta version first in order for this tool to be available. The regular Photoshop doesn't have it yet, and you need to download the latest version of the creative suite of course.
I'm using the ai to help fix a group photo from work. I had to be in the photo so I set it up on a tripod got it all set and had a student worker take the picture. I forgot to lock the tripod down and she must have bumped it cuz half my outer arm was cut off and things were off center. I didn't even think to double check the framing when I reviewed the photo lol this ai is saving me so much time!
Simply Amazing what AI technology has achieved. Beautiful illustration
I'm so here for it. My jaw dropped multiple times lol
Thank you so much Russell and all the exceptional guys at Adobe! Amazing feature! God bless you all and good luck!
Stunning !
This blow my mind, similar to midjournej. Now 9 old kids with good imagination can make nice composition without any effort, that's crazy
THIS! is exactly what I've wanted since 2012
what have you been up to in the meantime? This stuff is pretty easy to do without ai
@@rutgervandesteeg Never had a decent enough Pc till last few years to do any kind of good Photoshop work, this would have been amazing and perfect back then
@@rutgervandesteeg any suggestions on learning to do it manually?
@@iAm50Cal_ Lighting is EVERYTHING in compositing. Master how light reacts/hits objects and how shadows are cast and you're miles ahead. Between that and learning to match your 'blacks' between the two images. Those are the two things that once you understand it changes everything.
@@rutgervandesteeg Lmao. Pretty easy? Creating a pond realistic like that is not easy. I know how how to do it, but it takes lots of time.
Amazing demonstration, all done within the application. exactly how I want to understand how AI is tranforming. Thank you man. Wish you happy 2024.
Love how that toolbar magically appeared!
I'm still using Photoshop since 1992, but these features are what I need especially the last one Panaramic creater.
Hi! Any tips on how to make the new extended parts of the image the same color than the original? At first look it looks ok but if you look closer, you can tell that there's a difference, you can even sometimes see a very soft but visible line between the original and the new. Thanks for the video!!
Nice enhancements! How about quick tools to sharpen images using AI? Fake objects are fun and stuff but to improve pictures taken with subtle enhancements like sharpness and better auto-enhancers would be great.
I'm pretty sure they're not there yet. Deblurring works fine on objects, but it renders faces unrecognizable. They're still human faces, but not the people that are supposed to be in the original photo.
They have these options in the new version of Lightroom.
They can't charge as much for that, and besides, ALOT of sharpening can be done already with the existing tool set.
For the features you ask I think the only option is that provided by Topaz Labs.
Topaz is your medicine
This is helpful for me, and, pranking to my friends like that I was there, and they like saying, WOW! Your lucky!
What a great age to learn and use adobe Photoshop :)
i kept telling myself im wayyy too impatient to use photoshop,
but now with this tool, i think i wanna dabble 😅
id like to see this available on ios or android tablets
Adobe, Always Amazing ❤❤
this is the only tool you need, unreal !

@@Photoshop thank you 🙏
This is just crazy !
If I rasterize a genearative expand layer (one effect is that the mask is cancelled) or if I only cancel the layer mask for any reason, the resolution of the image decreases incredibly.
Why? 😞
This is very bad .. Sometimes I do the expand as first, and after that I want to use the spot healing brush or other tools that cannot work with a smart filter layer, so I have to rasterize the layer.
May be I do something wrong in my process concept?
Or do you have any suggestion?
Thanks 🙂
Betas 24.5 and 24.6 not showing the generative fill...
Seems like you missed the most important part, how do we get started I don't see any of the options you mentioned

WOOOOOOOOOOW Speachless !
It looks very cool.
But look at the sun position and the shadow in the front of the pool.
But still impressive.
What do you mean? It's all automatically generated
@@SW-fh7he Yes i know, but the speaker is trying to tell anybody how amazing the tool is, but the sun in that position actually ruins the photo, since the shadows now are totally wrong.
@@ReinkeDK it's the most mind blowing tool and you are still whining. Pure trolling
@@SW-fh7he Yes its good, but not as amazing as you believe.
But if you are blown away its good for you.
I just look at what it actually does.
Have you actually tried it? In real life it still needs a lot of work, but its a beta
@@SW-fh7he Only mind blowing thing is your idiocy. The person above told you the image is wrong in terms of fundamentals, specifically lighting. Yet, your amoeba of a brain perceives this as an insult. It will only get worse when people like you skip fundamentals and generate nonsensical stuff all around the internet.
What he’s not telling us in this video is that when you do this kind of stuff the resolution suffers. Once they can overcome that, this will be great. But at this point who wants to work with crappy resolution? I suppose if you’re only going to put this on Instagram, resolution doesn’t matter.
well its a beta, max resolution is 1024px on the longest side, but you can get around it by generating several smaller areas instead of 1 big one
Why even bother with the cynicism dude? At this point, at this rate of advancement, its clear something like that resolution issue will be ironed out by the end of the year. So is it even worth bringing up? Or do you just have a bone to pick with AI?
There’s always that one person that nitpicks anything revolutionary 🤣🤣🤣 when we make it to mars “we barely made it to mars? This sucks we should have already made it to Pluto Ugh 😂😂😂
Very useful for things that will be converted to print using halftones like screenprinting t shirts

Incredible
This IS real cool!
I am hoping that this and the ‘remove’ tools are ported over to Lightroom (LR/LRc) as well as mobile. On that thought, is Adobe planning to develop LRc for the iPad Pro? Given that today is the launch date for Apple’s Final Cut and Logic, I certainly hope so, as frankly I am getting very tired of this ‘watered down’ LR that has yet to match tool for tool the power of LRc that was promised. If you want to keep me and I am sure others in your ecosystem, you seriously need to step it up, it has been too long of a wait.
I wondered the same thing when I had my iPad Pro. I think it's actually Apple throttling what they allow the iPad to do. I got a lot more usability out of my dual core iMac from 2008 than I did out of my iPad Pro with an M1 processor

I wonder if, theoretically, you could use the “expand” feature to make an old 4:3 movie widescreen?
If you mean expanding 4:3 motion images to 16:9 motion motion images, I am not sure why someone would wish to do this. After all, the cinematographer shot in this format for a good reason..
It is probably a matter of time before Adobe introduces Generative Fill for After Effects. That said, where it may work in helping create set extensions, “clean up” work will always be necessary.
