In 2021 Montana was our first state until we saw the political breakdown. Idaho was our second with Meridian, Moscow, Sandpoint, Coeur d’Alene, etc… but a house with some land and within 30 to hospital was waaaaaay outside the budget. Enter Wyoming! These are the reasons we moved to Wyoming! We moved to Worland, which has a lot less wind than most of Wy. It's a small town and more affordable, but not the natural beautiful we were accustomed to in Washington, unless you drive at least 30-60 minutes out. Still, for these strange times, it's a good place.

There is a fundamental difference between California and Idaho republicans. Same with Idaho and California conservatives. Californians expect a certain level of modern necessities that are government-provided. They expect roads to always be clear, trash to be dealt with, and several other aspects of self-reliance that are foreign to them. There used to be a certain level of ruggedness required to live here in Idaho. The influx of new people does not possess this.
North Idaho has suffered the same fate as many "hidden gems" across the country. Talking to folks from the Reno/Tahoe area say that North Idaho is doing the same thing that happened there 30 years ago, same with Bend Oregon, and Eagle Colorado, Jackson Wyoming, hell even Spokane. These areas become popular because of their small-town feel and then get bought up by developers and rich people, they are given carte blanche by commissioners and then exploited to the nth degree, becoming over-saturated. The area then loses the appeal it originally possessed and the population is left to suffer the resulting high cost of living and lowered quality of life, all the while the complicit local government dances on the corpse of those they have sold out as they now "have theirs". When North Idaho is ruined it will move on to the next "hidden Gem", and the cycle will continue and ruin another place.
To add to the second paragraph though, it is a wicked problem, locals are complicit and share the blame. Many generational farms have been sold off to developers because the kids inherit the farm, don't want to farm, and just see dollar signs$$$ being thrown at them without regard to the long-term destruction that will happen when the Rathdrum Prarie is a big sub-division. Natural resources are then stretched to the max and you will have these weaker "conservatives" whining and complaining that they can't water their lawns and that someone should clean out their driveway and their road isn't plowed and the government won't take care of them enough even though they pay taxes, blah blah blah. Happy Friday. Good Video 😉

Born and raised in Hayden, still liver here. Less than 2000 people in Hayden when I was a kid and government way was highway 95. Athol was nothing more than a roadhouse bar. This place was a logging and mining community. Those days are gone forever. The facts are that folks want to live here and there is no stopping it. Some will leave but the majority will stay. Our best hope is that the newcomers assimilate, respect, and embrace our values. Some of us natives have profited from the growth but the vast majority’s wages have not kept up with the cost of living. Wages have always been terrible here, but it used to be very inexpensive to live here. When I graduated high school, you could buy a brand new house in Prairie Falls for 58K.

This has been the story and the opinions of people residing in most conservative so-called fly-over states for well over 2 decades! I live in the so-called backward Missouri Ozark Mountains, and we have suffered from philosophical naturalists folks from Cally who believe we are less intelligent than themselves because we survive with far lower wages and far lower cost homes than what they have experienced in their former lifestyle. They tended to drive up the cost of our properties in waves for some reason. Fortunately. most of them eventually moved elsewhere!
As for myself: I used to drive truck OTR, and I always felt I fit right in when I was talking to Idaho folks. The land prices have kept me away though.
I am about retirement age now, but I still don"t have hundreds of thousands of dollars of spare money to spend!

The problem is that even if they assimilate, they’re still here. Just try to go camping or go on a hike. The whole state is completely overrun. My entire life, I’ve been able to just venture out and not see another soul, but those days are long gone and they aren’t coming back. I had planned on living here and raising my kids here for the entirety of my life and now we are considering other places. It’s been very disheartening to see my lovely home bludgeoned to death by an onslaught of newcomers. Enjoy the festering corpse of a once great state.

OK, I hate to do two different posts, but the subjects are very different. When you mention that many people coming into Idaho are registered Republicans, you need to consider two things. One, there is a wide range of thought with Republicans. Some more conservative than others. This could mean that Idaho moves to the left. The second thought is where the more liberal inflow is going to live within Idaho. Although the percentage of liberals compared to conservatives is less, if they congregate in an area such as Boise, the influence of that large city will be able to out vote those in the outer part of the states. This is exactly what has happened in many states, including the state I am from - MN.

    • @coastalhillbilly3419
      @coastalhillbilly3419 Před 6 měsíci +18

      Yep, 1-3 metro areas 10%
of the land mass can carry 90% of the remaining land mass, also big cities are easier to game the vote forever
Also 1llegals are counted in census which gains lib states more seats in the house of representatives which in turn makes policy for the entire nation

    • @markw999
      @markw999 Před 6 měsíci +16

One word answer: Mormons. They still dominate, especially in Boise. The reason we will (probably) never have legalized pot. Which I am personally fine with. Boise is weird, they vote for Democrat Mayors, then vote Republican for everything else. Even other local offices like the County Commissioners. Full disclosure - my step-dad was a Commissioner down south years ago so I know a little about the local political idiosyncrasies. I'm thinking the Mayoral race is dominated by public sector union endorsement?? That's a guess. Current Mayor of Boise even used to describe herself as a Socialist years ago.
Coeur d'Alene is similar with Steve Widmyer having been a Dem mayor for two terms. I grew up 2 houses down from him and went to school with his wife. Good guy, our fathers worked together at Bunker Hill mine. I never held the "Democrat" affiliation against him - LOL. My Dad was a Union steward and a Democrat too. I don't think he'd recognize today's Democrat party though.
North Idaho used to be the Democrat area of the state. We were once heavily pro-union with logging companies, mills and mines heavily unionized. The last bastion of that is Lewiston, Idaho, where the Clearwater Paper Mill is still a big employer and unionized. We had Dems like Cecil Andrus (good friend of my ex-wife's family and a logger), Senator Frank Church, and Congressmen LaRocco and Stallings in the 90s. Nobody will believe this if you tell them today, but in the early 90s BOTH Idaho congressmen were Dems. So it's gone back and forth over the years, but I wouldn't expect it to ever go back to Democrat as screwy as they are. Strangely, our most prominent politicians nationally were probably Andrus and Church and they were both Dems.
Kind of a weird state politically in some ways. Good luck.

I was flying back from South America last year to see a huge billboard on state line stating "save our children, save democracy, banning books", we all know that is liberal language for Marxism. I'm not going to go into the sick/twisted/perverted books in question all across this nation as you can easily look those stories up everywhere. It was a prop to "save our libraries" headed by 2 liberal woman from and educated in Washington practicing law in CDA. My point is, it passed. We also have the pleasure every year of "family" pride at the park. People have no idea that it is their fault in the end when they fail to see all the signs that have destroyed places like Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, and Oregon.

How can you be freedom loving when marijuana is totally illegal?? If I moved there I'd become a multiple daily criminal offender for this reason alone which is beyond insane. Here in CA I can buy it legally and cannot be denied a job or fired for off duty use. In Idaho I'd be a pariah, constantly living in fear of your government or disgruntled employers stuck in the past demanding my urine to purity test. This is disasterous policy where everyone loses. California is definitely too liberal for me but at least I'm treated like a normal person and not a two bit criminal. I never understood how people can argue states like Idaho or Texas are freedom loving when grown adults can't even use a plant without the state coming after them.

However, I wish folks would quit using just California, Washington and Oregon to compare Idaho to especially in the cost of living scenarios. Use other states as well because the 2 or 3 these youtubers, usually realtors, cite are the most expensive West coast states. Not everyone moves here from the left coast. I noticed that EVERYTHING here is a lot more expensive than say Georgia, Tennessee, Indiana, Kentucky and the like. Land here is especially out of reach unless it is a turd where you have to dig a thousand foot deep well to the tune of $150,000 for your first drink of water. If you even hit water. Nez Perce county mandates that depth. Actually the state does, IN that county. Do your research before you sell where you're at now to head this way. It can be a shock.

I used to live in Troy , Montana & while living there , I worked every job that came available & still wasn't able to stay off government assistance .. it was very low cost of living back than ... I really don't miss having to concentrate on survival skills attached to every selected option may have harsh outcome that can be devastating ! Reality was my best teacher back than ! I keep my mouth shut now on what I am now selecting , due to , so many have also selected to do accordingly , only to cause such reproach & add to difficulties that should not arise from being responsible with their selections as they go ! Due to folks selecting poor options .. I'd rather not be associated with folks period ! I'd rather stand on my own merit . & not be judged for what others select ! I want to be left alone & mind my own business , & wish others would do the same !

I would have to believe those reasons are overwhelming responsible for any exodus or decision not to move to Idaho. Anyone now can research (or, arguably, just know) the situation regarding the weather and political persuasion of the majority there. The relatively recent increase in home prices you posted did take me aback. Wow.

The comments have been great to read. Your information accords with both what I've read and heard from a couple whose children moved them where I live. I've recently begun considering Idaho from Nevada (retired already). I had been thinking a conservative county in Oregon. I'm not crazy about the weather in Idaho, but the Boise County Commission outlawing mRNA vaccinations for children has made me take favorable notice. Open carry without a permit is more inline with my own values. I've still got some life to live, and I want a state which will stand up to Federal authority. The only action which saved us from a far more permanent lockdown was states going against federal restrictions and reopening as they saw fit. States like Texas and Florida are simply too warm for me, and Idaho seems to stand strong as a state.

Interesting video to me since my ex moved to Northern Idaho. I think he got a government job there. I live in Central California, down the hill from Tahoe. I used to live in (at the time) a small town at a higher elevation. It was a small town until people discovered it, then, not so much. Digging out from snowstorms became something horrible to me and I am grateful I do not live there anymore.
Thank you for this video. It helps me understand his current environment.
P.S. One of the reasons I would not want to live there is because it is too far from the ocean. Mountains are beautiful to live in but I love the beach, too. Where I live, I can drive to either Tahoe or the beach and back in one day.

This is my second move up to Idaho. One thing that hasn't changed between the 1980's and 2020 is that you can't paint Idaho with a wide brush. I can leave my house, drive 50 miles and be in a totally different world. Knowing that we spent the better part of 4 years visiting different places to live up here. Our 1st trip re rolled into Bosie in the middle of the night, checked into a motel, got up the next morning and it was like I never left Hayward Ca. So off to the nearby cities, if you want to know a city visit the alleys where we found empty booze bottles, used needles and trash littering the road. Not what we were looking for. The following years we found so great places but without idea properties to purchase. Our last trip we are driving by Texas ridge, there is a farmer on his combine, two dogs barking alongside, on the farmer's lap was a 5 year old, hands on the wheel totally like he was in charge of that combine. I'm like STOP the car, I want to live in a place that allows that! A week latter we found a nearby house and paid the asking price. 5 years latter this July we fall in love with our home and the people here a little more each day, maybe that wouldn't have happened in some of the other nearby towns and cities not far from here.
As far as cost of living. Leaving California, I also left behind $7,500 a month bills, the cost of commuting, gas car insurance, rent, car smog, car ma electric, healthcare, groceries, nat gas, water, phone, city taxes and on and on.
We consider our house paid for after the first 4 years of not paying rent and $600 a month plus groceries covers all those recurring monthly bills. So those high cost of living figures is probably a result of people submitting to corporate rules or poor financial planning .

I used to live in Idaho 25 years ago. What a time it was living in a log cabin on the bank of the Salmon River and working on the Middle Fork of the Salmon river. Me and Honey Pie were rafting, inflatable kayaks, hard shell sit on top kayaking and jet boating. We had bears in the apple trees, deer in the garden and a mountain lion just across the creek passed the outhouse. One day hunters shot both bears that were eating frozen apples from the trees. We were shocked that anyone would shoot 2 bears in apple trees on clearly fenced and gated private property. This marked the beginning of the end of a bygone era that lucky me got to experience the very end of. So many interesting people living big in stunning Idaho back before river running became dangerous and I headed to India and Nepal. Probably never go back to see what it looks like now! If Idaho wasn't so anti-women and anti-inclusive it'd be a perfect state. I was born and raised in Idaho and only left when I joined the service. When I retired it was a sad realization knowing that I couldn't in good conscious consider moving back knowing that any daughters or granddaughters would be treated worse than third world citizens as far as healthcare as well as the racial discrimination that is still going on. I know the anti-diversity mentality has gotten better since I've left over 20 years ago, but I have relatives there and I still see it when I come to visit. I am a political refugee and now a 2+ year Idaho resident…. Gun laws…. THE BEST…. Instant back ground checks…fill out paperwork, immediate call to DOJ, pay, walk out the door with your new/used firearm. No ammo back ground checks. No extra fees either. Open carry or concealed carry, both legal, WITHOUT needing a permit. However, if you apply and get a conceal carry permit, you can do that also. If approved for a permit, when purchasing a firearm, no call to DOJ. Your permit is your approval for that. Renewal annually and buy your firearms quickly and efficiently. Places like CommiFornia are doing the exact same process, however they just make you wait the 10 days. Typically FFL’s they charge you on Background checks. So far, you buy from the shop in Idaho doing your check, no fee for background check. I even have an FFL who will do your background check for free if you order your firearm elsewhere if you have a concealed carry permit!!! Makes you want to spend your money with him even the more!!! Yes, suppressors are legal, just have to go through the ATF form 4 process, pay tax stamp fee ($200) but that’s the same in all 42 states that allow suppressors, short barrel rifles, etc. As stated above, Idaho gun laws are some of the best 2A gun laws around. KEEP IDAHO, IDAHO. I Love this Conservative, Red State!

Crazy growth! I am grateful we have a home pre-pandemic, I don't think we could survive otherwise. One question, though....if older people are moving here and the service industry dissolves due to low income, how will they survive? Income will have to keep up to maintain, I would guess. I don't know, we don't eat out, go to movies, or sports anymore because of the cost of living, but all I have to do is look out my window at Schweitzer and that feeling makes it all worth it to me. :) You can't eat the scenery, but I'd rather eat beans and rice here (it hasn't quite come to that yet, thank God!) than feast anywhere else.

I've heard from many people that Idaho is a dangerous place to live because wild animals can get you and so many people are retreating back to the states they came from. I've heard the bears come out in springtime and it can be very dangerous living in such a remote state.

Idaho's got a substantially weaker bear population as far as grizzlies go compared to the surrounding states (Washington, Montana, Wyoming; Idaho's got a barely stable ~100, mostly in the Bitterroots, vs 500, 2,000, 600, respectively, or Alaska's 30,000). Black bears are still around, though they're even more skittish, and they can get into unpleasantry with people, mostly vulnerable (young children) or in surprise encounters, and the period of time where most attacks happen is generally late summer when bears and people are both most active.
I don't think Idaho's a particularly dangerous wildlife place, relative to the states around it, esp. if the main focus is bears. You're more likely to have your trees eaten by white-tail deer than get into an unwanted encounter.

A beautiful state to be in, no plans to move, but it seems culture issues and tax cuts take precedent over actual family needs at the moment.

Idaho has always been conservative. But Idaho has also had D governors and senators - hard to believe that was ever the case for sure. There was a level of reasonableness by the R/conservatives such that the common good of Idahoans was paramount. That has all gone away in the state legislature, school boards, and local government which are now over run w woke Rs, D Moon for example, (supported by their newly arrived extremists following their agendas learned elsewhere) trying to restrict every bit of freedom they possibly can.

Great videos, you guys. It's very informative. How do your raw land prices compare to those in the Lake Chelan area. I know this question may be difficult to answer without certain parameters, but generally speaking. I was purchasing 22 acres within the boundaries of the town of Pateros, and it was owner financed. It's was a pretty good deal at just under $22,000 with small monthly payments, $172.00 per month. When the smoke from the fires rolled in 2 years ago, I decided not to exercise my option to purchase. I regret that decision. Do you have many properties there that are owner financed? Thanks, Don Wilson, Tacoma, Washington.

I just moved back to WA from Idaho because the cost of living and wages.cost of living in WA is still higher but wages are way better. Also the local towns out there operate the local schools on levy’s to the community. Who doesn’t want to support kids. 😅 but when the property taxes double and cost of living goes up who can afford another 2-4 million dollar levy. There’s a lot of nuances there that non locals don’t understand. Also on the people leaving, the snow load is a real expense. Just plowing your driveway and snow maintenance is a real part time job. 16hr days from work at the office to work at home. Not for the faint of heart.

I wanted to move to Arizona But we are elderly and my wife did not want to move to a place where we had no family. Southern Idaho was a compromise for us (we have family here). Soooo.
I feel we traded the rain for the wind, its windy ( sand in th air windy) almost every day. 100+ deg. in the summer and teens in the winter. Would I move here again? yes, like I said "we have family here" and we can't afford San Diego. Boise likes lefty Mayors for some reason. Kinda odd, those same people vote for Republicans for every other office, but they'll vote for a near Socialist for Mayor. Go figure. Current Mayor is a trip and Dave Bieter before her was something like Idaho's Gavin Newsome. Odd guy for this area of the country - I met him twice. I'd describe him as an "Extreme People Pleaser". I think he would have given me a foot rub if I'd asked for one.
Idaho is a uni-party state. Some people feel better because it's the Republicans not the Democrats. But it becomes the "good old boy" network no matter which party takes over. That and we simply don't say "no" to developers. Even if there are no roads, no infrastructure, no schools, and no real plan, local politicians will go ahead with the housing. Every time. Their idea is we'll figure out details later.
