This song was funny and had some good one-liners but overall I think the message of the song is something everyone should consider.

      Love is a choice.
This is why local love is easier than long distance love.
It has to be earned in a way that both chooses to.
It will need consent in it's deepest ways ans it will always be a choice to do so.
      Love is choosing to be.
With Choice comes power, with great power comes great responsibility, with great responsibility comes great fulfillment.
      We all deserve Love.

i dont think the "your perfect guy doesnt exist" vs "your perfect girl does but she died last week" is about who has more "realistic" expectations regarding the whole romance thing, he's probably saying that women are more pressured to perform a certain way and are held to a higher standard (regarding appearances at least) by society in general, which often leads to mental health problems, eating disorders and other shit like that, hence the whole "she was what you wanted but she died last week" bit, which is really fucking sad to think about

In love, as in all of life, the thing that ruins most things is expectations. Anything good becomes bad because it wasn't great. Nice things suck because they aren't spectacular. Good people are seen as boring because they're not exhilirating.
Bo actually makes a good point. Just pick someone and love them. Don't imbue them with undue expectation that they can never met. Sometimes we are the architects of our own destruction and loneliness.

  • @VonPatzy
    @VonPatzy Pƙed 2 lety +14

I love Bo and this song is sweet but I think the line I agree with most is the last one about his age.
Patriarchy is not an even playing field and, while I admit there are some young women with unrealistic dreams of what love will be, women are more trained to NEED more then anything not to be alone.
Bo’s song “repeat stuff” speaks to this well.
Women settle IN MASS for men who not only provide little work in the house and the relationship but even abuse or kill them and these women are trained to keep loving him and lower expectations constantly.
Many men grow up seeing a perfect girl is promised to him to be his therapist and mom and sex doll and when he doesn’t get this - well, that’s where incel culture comes from.
I am, of course, speaking in extremes and there are a lot of people in the middle of those margins - but nothing is an even comparison within patriarchy.

I saw this line about girl dying more like a reference to the fact that some women try to live up to expectations of men so much that they end up duying in the process. Like by plastic surgeries, injections and all that stuff. For me it also shows that expactations of men for women are so high that no one can live up to them without dying.
Also noted how Bo sang "lower your expectations A FEW" for women and "lower your expectations A LOT" for men
    Thanks for the vid~

Well it was just a simple "set up, pay off, set up, subvert" comedy structure, but I mean, Bo is also correct in saying that, with billions of people in the planet, odds are there _is_ someone out there who ends up fitting every little crazy criteria someone makes up for their perfect partner... Odds are that person lived about 200 years ago on a whole different part of the planet but hey, they existed, kudos... There will never be another just like them, stop looking for perfection and lower your expectations. That's how I took the "last week, she died"

I remember watching this special right when it came out and I might just be misremembering now after so many years, but I believe the line "she's real, but last week, she died" actually referred quite literally to a real person who died not long before the special was filmed. It was some porn star or a famous actress and it was recent news, which was why the audience reacted the way they did because they knew who he was talking about. That being said I've spent like 30 minutes now just going through obituaries trying to figure out who it was and I can't seem to find it so I could just be making this up or it would be weird nobody else remembers. Bo was a lot edgier though back then and he was a kid so a lot of what he wrote for specials like what and make happy really were just simply for shock value.

The way I interpret "she's real but last week she died" is that culturally, we've moved away from how things used to be in the past, where women were more blatantly oppressed than they are today, and during those past, more patriarchal times maybe the reality of having a wife aligned more closely to what Bo describes as guys' expectations in the song, but in today's age we have become more progressive and women have more freedom and agency in their lives, so guys are fooling themselves by holding those outdated expectations and not actualizing with the times. I could be reading way too deeply into it, since some people are saying it was just a funny line to subvert our expectations in the hook, but it could also be both imo.
edit: at least in the USA. I know in other countries the patriarchal culture is still very real to this day.

Love involves a certain willful loss of control over what happens next because there is more than just your input.

I think the I'm only 25 line is part of Bo being self conscious about coming off pretentious. He really is brilliant, well beyond his years. He often mentions that he's young so he he may not know what he's talking about, even though he certainly seems to

Chris, in Bo earliest content as a high-schooler in his bedroom he wrote and sang alot about how his family and people at school thought he was gay. And throughout those year he wrote more about it. To this day, he will still write bits that poke at the people who thought he was gay when he's not. I recommend watching "my whole family" uploaded 15 years ago. It's on his CZcams. 😃 this is in regards to you saying that you weren't quite sure where Bo was coming from on the gay bit at the beginning.

Yeah not every man has lower expectations than women. People are all different but it's that we all have high expectations in love. I've seen some chick's who will put up with a man who abuses her & dudes who genuinely want a girl that will stay hot forever, so we know it's not that only girls have higher unfair expectations of men. Bo was speaking about ALL of us. And in couples therapy you will find that we all have imperfections to work on & compromise with your partner.

This song was like 8 years ago, nowadays it's the women who would have to lower their expectations a lot, while the men are just sitting there confused, contemplating if banging the new 37th gender that came out last week is considered gay, straight, or a new sexual orientation.

i think the explanation for "last week she died" is not that men have less expectation on women (obviously not), but that women expectations in general are considered delusional while men expectations on women is basically a pressure from a whole entire society, since we are kids we learn to please man, that we should know how to cook, clean for or husband, to always look beautiful in the outside no matter what it takes, so what bo is describing is something we face everyday, so that's why she "die", this women die trying to achieve man/society expectations.

So, I'm extremely lucky. To quote someone "I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one." I married my best friend while I was in the military to get paid more. When I got out we figured it can't get any more serious than married so lets give this a shot. We've been married for 12 years now, hardly ever fight (each other, her family is fucking crazy though) and we beat the doctors who said she couldn't have kids. Our son is about to turn 5 in December. This not even mentioning the crazy coincidences that led to us meeting in the first place. I was evacuated from Katrina and she fled South Carolina to get away from her family. We sat down in cricket customer service training. I looked over and saw her drawing a hatchet man and said "Hey, my girlfriend is a lette, you wanna smoke after work." My wife and my gf from that time still talk to this day. I do tell her we have a movie relationship because it's so rare and crazy. Idk why I felt like sharing this but here it is. đŸ˜…đŸ€—

I think that the line “but last week she died” could potentially have a much darker meaning.
In trying to pursue my idea of what “thin” is, and what men find attractive, I almost died because I was losing weight too rapidly.
Weight insecurities are extremely prevalent among women, and having anorexia increases the risk of suicide exponentially.

I'm fairly certain "She's real, but last week she died." is just a throwaway line for shock value, but if you were to try and read a deeper meaning into it I think it makes more sense that it's less about men having "more realistic expectations" and more that both men and women have completely unrealistic expectations for each other, but women are more societally pressured to meant those impossible standards than men are.

  • @ZacharyFinch
    @ZacharyFinch Pƙed 2 lety

I sorta see love as a blurring boundary along your sense of self as you grow together with someone. There’s an acceptance and a sense of vulnerability that’s rewarded with a warm feeling of being more than just yourself. It’s beautiful but messy. I think it’s low key more toxic than most admit, but only because I think our culture is so anti-social that the fear of that bond ending and never finding a new one causes us to cling to what we have past the point where it should’ve ended, even if that’s ultimately worse for us. Idk what the solution is tho.

"Last week she died" Making news headlines in the crime section!!!! only way in which many men would actually pay attention to worthy women who are everything they want/need but get dissed because of some list-item missing. By the time they notice them, it's extremely late or just late.
Metaphorically: That exact girl used to exist but she "died" because she changed after being told she was never enough or exactly what someone else needed or thought they wanted.

I can't believe there's any way that Bo meant men have more realistic expectations than women do with his second verse, I'm pretty certain it was just classic misdirection for a laugh. And I love your analyses (I've binged like all your Bo reactions, great work!) but I also have to disagree with the bit about women 'misunderstanding' men as being sexual. I don't think we misunderstand it, it's just something we HAVE to be privy to, that we HAVE to assume, as women.
OF COURSE not all men are inherently sexual, and it IS a harmful stereotype - one rooted in patriarchal norms. But the fundamental sexualization of women in almost every area of life is so indicative that men, on an institutional level NOT on an individual one, are sexual. Almost every iconic female character in media - even children's media - have been sexualized in some capacity. The fetishization of female-dominated occupations (nurses, secretaries, etc.). The sexualization of wlw. We don't 'assume' men are sexual out of naiveté, but because for the most part with men, we have to operate under an ulterior-motives-until-proven-otherwise type deal. Just my thoughts!

Personally, I always thought of it as the men's expectations of women exist, but those women are desperate enough to change themselves and it's usually a dangerous life of abuse or addiction that they live or something else that might cause them to live a short life. Either that, or he just changed it up to catch people off guard and make the punch funny again.

The people who are trying to make it out to be a competition about who has more realistic expectations really missed the point of this song and are just trying to cope with their own negative traits by directing attention at other people.
Saying "I have unrealistic expectations, but that guy is worse than me" doesn't redeem you in any way. The point is that there's value in loving and being loved, not whether it's unfair that certain men expect you to be a nympho model while you're "only" expecting them to be able to read your mind, be a simp and be born rich.
