I’m in my 30’s, been living on my own in Chicago while raising my son for 16 years. These past few years have been a challenge maintaining/building a career. So I’m moving back to my mom’s house so I can finally do what I have been holding back on…I’m back in school! Fall of 2023 I’ll start phlebotomy and medical assisting certification programs so I can get my foot in the healthcare door. From there, hoping to study a specialty like Respiratory Therapy. I don’t mind starting at the bottom bc I’ve been at the bottom in other aspects of life. This will be my stepping stone. Wish me luck!

Im a 6 years MA getting pay $31 hrs. Its all about experience and location, yes. MA do not get pay enough, been there done that, started off at $11 at a private practice, but at that time the economy was not doing bad. In this economy right now 2023, I would not recommend starting fresh as an MA due to low pay right out of school and high living cost. Aim higher! But if its something you want to do and can afford the pay wages after MA school. Yes go for it! Being an MA is hard but I am, till this day, very passionate about my MA career. You will experience many emotion in this career & gain so many knowledge. Good luck everyone.

Agreed. I have 6 years experience and am salary at 72k/year, which translates to 35/hr. I'll be leaving this field shortly for PA or RN school. Already accepted into RN school, waiting for PA acceptance. Good luck everyone

Depends on where you are from honestly. I’m in the 75th percentile and it’s my first MA Job. So making 18.50-19.00 is pretty damn good I must say. Without a certification

Lol I did vocational training in 2012, was hired from my externship (mom and pop walk in family practice) at a whopping $10 an hour. I didn’t have bills to pay at the time and wanted experience so I stayed for a few months until I was fired lol stopped medical assisting from July 2012 until July 2019 (but maintained my certification and stayed in healthcare). I went into a private practice where they started everyone at $15 an hour (unless you knew someone) whether you were certified or not. I became close with a receptionist who ended up getting promoted to assistant manager of the practice, he vouched for me after 2 years of getting 30 cents raises, I was making $17.50 at the time I left (July 2022). Left them for a big hospital/university system, worked in urology/pelvic health for 5 months at $22.12, left them last month and am regretting it now. Now I work at Kaiser Permanente as a Clinical Assistant in Internal Medicine, it’s the same as a Medical Assistant but everyone I’ve met with my title at KP has never been a medical assistant, just CNAs/ techs. My location is chaotic and bad. I make $24.74 an hour and currently looking to either go back to where I was making $22.12 OR a place affiliated with the previous place that paid me $15-17.50 but in my new role coming back I’d be a Care Coordinator and they offered $22.60 - $23 an hour with quarterly bonuses of $5K. I am in Maryland.

May I ask how? Do you work for an agency doing local contracts or something? Or a big hospital full time? I’d love to make that as a medical assistant. Do you have your certification?
I finished my program in the summer but haven’t found an MA job yet. I took a sitter job at a hospital though; I’m hoping to transition out at some point.

@Erica Woods I applied for a doctor office while waiting to take my NHA test and got hired. Plenty of the kids in my class is making that or more before we even took our test. Some of the kids were making $27 hour. The lowest from my class I believe was $23 an hour

I will say that New York has an extremely high cost of living. $28/hr in a place where the average cost of rent is $4,000 is still low in my personal opinion. Now I would love to have that $25 in a place like Kentucky!
