Sister, I believe "night prayer" referred here is Tahajjud prayer. This is the prayer which is done seperate of Isha. Best time for this is 2/3 part of the night. The prophet never went more than 11 rakats on this. Minimum is 2 rakats. The five daily prayers are "mandatory". Isha has 4 and it is mandatory. But the Tahajjud is not mandatory but recommended. May Allah give us better understanding. Ameen
there is another hadith from our prophet (PBUH): our Lord SWT Descends to the Lowest Heaven when last third of the night is still and says: who makes Dua so I Answer Him?, who asks me So I Give Him?, who asks for forgiveness So I Forgive Him?.
