    Maria Bamford's last comedy special was performed in front of a sold-out crowd of two - her parents. It was a set as intimate as the subject matter she discussed.

      That was hilarious to me because of some people who have not quite said that, but have believed that I have a moral failing because I'm chronically ill, so I really _felt_ that whole section.

    I love her imitation of the friend coming to visit her. So many people are like that about any kind of illness - mental or otherwise - just take some herbs and vitamins and it will all be better. Maria is brilliant and I love that she found humor in something that often seems humorless.

    For those of us who do not have mental health problems will probably not understand or like or appreciate Maria Bamford. But for those of us who DO suffer with mental illness, Maria is a gem and a treasure and a light in the darkness

    I get why some people don't like her act: she's operating on a level way above them. She's a Da Vinci of comedy, and it's often only in hindsight that people appreciate such genius...

    Dear God the interviewer ended that abruptly and awkwardly. Maria is a genius and my Wife and I can't get enough of her humor. Favorite is the Paula Dean bit - almost too much humor packed into a shortnin' mar-garine cake-bread to handle.

    Brave woman to talk about these things openly. Being manic and having suicidal thoughts is a huge stigma in today's society. The way she use her insecurities and idiosyncrasies in the comedy is brilliant. Wish more female comedians could be this good.

  • @jean-francoisdaignault9612

    I love that this video has been on here for nine years, and that I stumbled upon it today, in the middle of depressive episode. I needed to hear someone remind me that mental illness isn’t a moral failing, it’s a medical condition that can be treated/managed.
    Come to think of it… mental illness IS physical illness. It just happens that your brain is the organ that’s affected.
    To anyone else struggling… you’re not alone. This, too, shall pass. Be good to yourselves.

    • @geekdivaherself
      @geekdivaherself Před rokem

      I have a different type of illness, and I really _felt_ some of those statements, too. Any invisible illness, such as many rheumatological illnesses, will be the target of people like that, but those with mental illnesses will be judged more harshly which is ignorant. Of course, some people say to my face that I _only_ have a mental illness or a moral failing because I have a couple invisible rheumatological illnesses. That is one reason why I sympathize, which if you know its etymology is doubly funny: syn- "together with, jointly; alike; at the same time"+ pathos "feeling; suffering."

    Love Maria. Not just bc Im bipolar and get the irony but because her courage is amazing at finding the humor in cruelty. She's right. More than cancer more than heart failure, diabetes, the nations number one cause of death now is suicide.. The experts are scrambling to figure out how to help people, mass murder etc? Mental illness isnt something we can just wish away. The brain IS an organ. It's the organ that primarily directs almost everything. So focus some care on it....

    Announcing the Maria Bamford Random Love Bomb Club. Our mission is to send a random positive message to anyone leaving a comment anywhere on CZcams. Simply use the 'reply' button to any random comment on YT (thus selecting a human at random) and send them a message of love, solidarity, support, etc. It need not be in response to anything, better if it is not. This is the text I will be using: "I am sending you a random message of love and support. Inspired by Maria Bamford." See what grows.

    She doesn't have a goddamnn mental illness. Maria Bamford is AWAKE, and she doesn't quite know how to deal with all the masses of sleepwalkers. Bon appetit, and goodbye.

  • @amphibiandingoman9361

    The interviewer cuts her off during a very serious talk. I can only imagine Maria sees the humor in how quickly she got cut off while talking about suicide

  • @Jaboney69
    @Jaboney69 Před 10 lety +2

    Yes, DEFINITELY an 'orchid" of comedy. Orchid: Noun. A flower requiring extremely high-maintenance (considerable time investment), for very little return.
    No wonder so many of her CZcams videos have the comments stream disabled. She's likely tired of most folks saying she's not funny, just weird.

    • @frogsoda
      @frogsoda Před 10 lety +1

      Obviously, You have never raised orchids.
      And how would you know that _"..so many of her CZcams videos have the comments stream disabled."_ If you haven't watched them. If you don't like her, here's an idea, Don't watch.

    • @Jaboney69
      @Jaboney69 Před 9 lety +1

      We tried watching some of her other videos, hoping that at least ONE of them might be funny (or at least humorous). We then determined that while she is weird and strange, she is not particularly funny.
      By the way, you HAVE heard of the concept of "contrasting opinions"?
      This IS my OPINION. Please don't be afraid - it won't hurt you. Not sure why, but I guess you can't tolerate conflicting opinions? Strange. I tolerate YOURS just fine.
      That is kind of making my larger point for me. Anyone who disagrees with many of you is simply viewed as an "attacker" and is verbally rebuffed. Lighten up.

    I do have one little problem... she said, "7000 U.S. veterans are dying of suicide every year"....
    Well, no. It's about 350.
    Now PLEASE do not change the subject and say, "Well, that's still horrible".
    Of course it is.... I'm just saying that I don't think she realized what she said.

    • @testtest2609
      @testtest2609 Před 2 lety

      20 veterans a day commit suicide so it's more than 7,000 actually...more like 7,300.
      America doesn't care to know tho but will do 'support the troops' propoganda then promptly ignore 'em.
