    I bought a Opinel No12 about 2 years ago. In my opinion the best folder you can buy. I also use a No 6 as neck knife. Small or large, you can't go wrong with Opinel.

    I've had one for 14 years and the blade is much smaller now but it still takes a great edge.... best knife on the market without a doubt !!

    I use a No.10 in the garden for picking vegetables. The carbon steel is sharp as a razor! Love them Opinel's!

    The Opinel 12 is awesome. The 13 is a dead set whopper but the 12 is a great camping knife. Nice and light, easy to sharpen & affordable. It’s hard to go wrong with them. I have a small toolbox full.

      @@DonnieBAllDay, agreed mate. I have the same one you did a review on and bought an older model yesterday. Still a No.12. but from 1980 roughly. Better steel & a little bit fancy.
      I went nuts recently and bought a handful of the nicer Opinels. Paduk, Platane, Oak, Boxwood, walnut and olive. The Platane Opinel (plane tree but not plain at all) is one of 6,000. Pretty special I think.
      I need your advice on sharpening my bloody Condor Undertaker. I’m close to taking it to the grinder and see if that’ll work! I’ve sharpened it a million different ways and I CANNOT get it hair popping sharp. I’ve messaged Joe Flowers but he either hasn’t seen my message or something, no response.
      I have got my other Condors hair popping sharp. My speed bowie is ridiculously sharp. I’d take that before the Undertaker as I could use it for finer tasks. At the moment, the Undertaker is good for chopping and that’s it. It will hack through timber but it won’t cut a tomato.
      I saw your was very sharp. I have a WorkSharp but the Undertaker is too big for it. I have sharpening stones up to 8,000, cheapies.
      I have a diamond stone I use most, and a ceramic rod. Those get my other knives sharp, the Undertaker just gets pointy, not sharp.
      It’s making me question if I’m doing something wrong?

    • @DonnieBAllDay
      @DonnieBAllDay  Před 2 lety +1

      @@adammcguinness9950 If you already used diamond stone, I'd go straight to the grinder with some very fine grit

    I can recommend the Opinel no 12 saw. I’ve had mine for 10 years. Great for cutting thin wood or plastic and fits easily in the pocket. I am also going to buy a couple of stainless blades for camp food prep.

    Never hard used my opinel like this. I’m using mine for bbq picnic duty. But they are actually good in other uses. My bushcraft buddy at one time was using the knife for wood processing with a kukri. Kukri for the chopping and baton and the opinel for feathering sticking. The 90 deg backside of the blade is perfect to hit the ferro rod with.

    • @DonnieBAllDay
      @DonnieBAllDay  Před 5 lety

      It's a versatile blade. I use it mainly for bushcraft and breaking down cardboard.

    Exactly why I use a chef knife and an opinel. Thin blades built to chop through beef bone are not only cheaper but better. Because not only will they chop but they slice like razors through whiskers.

  • @hueytoo1058
    @hueytoo1058 Před 3 lety +2

    Wow that slip was scary in slow motion! 9:30 Having used an opinel I agree, that would have probably sliced clean through your finger!
    I've heard if you are going to baton you should unlock it to reduce stress. There are a few tricks to these knives like one handed opening call savoie tap.
    They are older than your grandpa so theres some cool history.
    Great knives. Geometry is what cuts and these knives are almost scalpel thin and actually have a slight convex for durability. I believe the smaller ones are thinner.
    I get the stainless though since its main use is for food. Carbon can leave a foul taste and must be cared for after use, but I cut oranges and forget it no problem. Who wants to worry about maintaining their knife on a nice picnic?
