  • Finale, Sibelius, and Dorico are all great music notation programs used for music composition. However, they can cost a lot of money to buy the full version. How do you know which one to purchase? Are there any other notation programs that are free? What is the best notation software for me? You have come to the right place to figure out which program is right for you before you make a huge purchase!

For me, between Finale and Sibelius, the latter of the two is more user-friendly. However, the Sibelius team is basically Dorico now. Dorico's future looks strong. What I'm moving to now is Staff Pad - to use a stylus pen and write in, tap and boom! Perhaps I will follow up with my soon-to-be experience with Staff Pad.

I've used Finale my whole life. Until I downloaded the most recent version, and they DID AWAY WITH THE MOVIE WINDOW! What the hell. Now I can't score movies, thanks Finale. I've always loved you. WHY? So guess what. I'm about to dive into some Dorico now. I've yet to try Sibelius, despite always hearing of it. Never heard of Dorico until today. Free trial, here I come. Finale, I'm so disappointed with you eliminating film score people from you client base!!

@@ChristelVinot I am trying to decide between Sibelius and Dorico. I have not decided yet, but one thing is for sure; I am done with finale. The reasons are pretty much the same as yours; but also user friendliness. The amount of time that takes you to get things done in one software vs the other. I have been using finale for a little over 10 years, and I tried to notate the same piece from scratch in finale, sibelius and musescore. In finale took me almost 3 times more than in the other two.

Musescore is good, but all these softwares have their own pros and cons and all of them have flaws - free ones and non free ones. I have used Musecore for a couple of years now, but I have finally decided that I need to buy one of tyhe mentioned softwares. It will be Finale because 1. It's only half the price right now. 2. I'm already familiar with Finale from before.
I don't trust Sibelius for various reasons. I think Musescore is generally speaking better than Finale. However, both have their advantages and disadvatages and their are some pronlems concerning the new Musescore 4 that have made me make the decision to buy Finale. It mainly has to do with the playback. Yes, the playback in Finale is not great, but their are some issues regarding Musescore 4 that that are not acceptable to me. Muse Sounds sometimes sound better than Noteperformer, but is often useless because you can't caliber the dynamic and the phrasings are often terrible. So I will buy Finale together with Noteperformer, because I can't go on like this.
