Awesome documentary...I saw this tour twice that year. First at New York's Madison Square Garden then again the following week at The Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. Both shows were quite awesome except for the fans setting off fireworks inside the Coliseum (around the 4th of July maybe) and also it was the beginning of the new drug offense laws in New York...Some fans being arrested in the parking lot as I recall. Anyway, Thanks for this video. 'Time well-spent on my part as a huge Tull fan.
Talk about time well spent. As much as I think I know ALMOST all there is to know about the best piece of music I ever hope to hear in my life, this clip provided fresh perspective, knowledge and the joy that comes with all that is 'A Passion Play'. Thanks to all involved especially Remy for bringing it to my attention and Tulltapes who built the foundation on which Play appreciation continues to be built.
Thank you so much for your kind words, it's a joy that you liked it 😁. I've worked for months with a close friend (who also suggested this tour) on the fact checking side of things.
I reached out to Remy and TullTapes once the project was advanced enough to show them what I wanted to do with their material, and it was a real bliss to be able to work with them also. Remy is a quite enjoyable, down to earth person, and one of the things that kept me going with this project is Remy's enthusiasm, and I'm quite grateful with that. He also made me aware of Cor Koppenol, the Dutch collectionist, and several sources which I've worked with comes from his original collection, hence the credit given to him at the end of the video. TullTapes was also keen on this project, and he's an amazing, humble lad, he let me use certain things he has done throughout the years to give a better atmosphere to my narration.
As I said in the video, I cannot thank them enough for their involvement on this project. And I also cannot thank them enough for the work they do, keeping the Tull torch lit for all of the new generations that are discovering their music.

Bravo!! My favorite Tull LP and tour. Saw it twice in ‘73
Extremely detailed, well researched, and expertly done presentation. I'm sure a lot of hard work went into putting this together. Thank you!
Thank you very much for watching and enjoying it ❤️ it took approximately 1 year and a half to make this one, but it totally worths it 😉.

Your documentary represents hours of labor and research. I thank you for your time and efforts. In my late teens, I saw APP with friends in Los Angeles. Although having listened to the LP previously, I was stunned with the stage performance. Well choreographed activities, lighting, and balanced sound. Yes, it's unfortunate that quality video recordings were not available at that time. However, it is like comparing a photograph of the Grand Canyon to actually being there. One cannot grasp the spectrum without seeing it in person. Your work brought back memories from those years past. On a final note, upon hearing Benefit and Stand Up, I bought my first dictionary to better understand the lyrics and later purchased sheet music to follow the time signatures and chord progressions. The band, for me, was inspirational. Aqualung solidified some of my beliefs. Thanks again for your efforts!
Thank you so much for your kind words, they mean a lot ❤️.
What an interesting relationship you have with Tull! And I totally agree with what you said about them.
Warmest wishes, RockIsDeadTheySay :')
I saw the May 30th show at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto , and it was terrific .
The opening , with the heartbeat , and the moving ballerina , that flows seamlessly into the band starting the concert , is by far the most imaginative , and best opening to a concert that I've ever seen . And I've been to hundreds of concerts since the 60s .
Thank you for this interesting video !
Thank you very much 😎 and thank you for sharing your Tull experience ❤️.

@@RockIsDeadTheySay You're welcome !
There was a Hush, along this Tull Pathway; there was a Hush, whilst I listened to this today!😅
I had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know a little bit Chris Amson, Tull's soundman, a lovely fellow, and the guy who composed the intro sequence to Passion Play. This was in the early 90s when Chris had moved to the little town in Northern California where I live. He became buddies with a good friend of mine, and if I remember correctly, gave him the EMS synth used for the PP recording. My friend sadly passed away some years later, and I wonder what ever happened to that synth, which was an interesting piece of Tull history.
What a great honor must have been to know him! And what a story! I wonder where that synth must be now
Thank you so much for sharing it with us ❤

I saw the N. American debut of APP live May 4th, 1973. The first song, an extended TAAB, lasted 90 minutes. Then, Ian said "And now for our second number..." and they played all of APP, except the Hare film malfunctioned part way through. The entire show was 3.5 hours long, not including the opener Brewer and Shipley. Two things: they had a new PA system costing $400,000. The cabinets were covered blue sparkle and hung in large stacks above either side of the stage. Tull had long runways on either side of the stage, extending into the crowd. They kept those for many years. Martin would run out during the first encore slide on his knees while playing a blistering solo. Good video.
Amazing description and history 🤯 Unfortunately, I couldn't find any evidence of that, and as such, I didn't include it. Thank you very much for watching ❤️
I saw the PP concert July of 1973, and they opened with PP right away. Opener was Steeleye Span, music I still love til today.
Brilliantly crafted, full of context and informative. The isolated pieces of information I had regarding this period were transformed into a cohesive whole story by you. Kudos!!! Well done!!!
Thank you very much pal 🤩 it's a bliss to know that this essay was able to help you to get together your info nuggets and to form a cohesive storyline for this obscure passage in Tull's history ❤️.

Just finished. Awesome. Great work!

@@RockIsDeadTheySay I didn't realize they had so many hanging lights. Would've loved if this show had been professionally filmed. All the details. The opening show with the pulse and ballerina film must've been quite striking.
They had, and it was a shocker for me too when I found out. And I'd also love to watch a full performance filmed professionally. That intro was SCARY, all things considered! I may reenact it in the future.
Thanks, that was brilliant,so informative.

I love Passion Play. I love everything about it. The music, the costumes, the ballet, the phone, EVERYTHING. I'm going to see Martin Barre in June and they're having a meet and greet and I'm going to ask him why so many people didn't like Passion Play??
Good luck pal 😉
@@RockIsDeadTheySay Thanks! I met him once before and he's not very talkative!
I'm sure he has a thing or two to say about A Passion Play
@@RockIsDeadTheySay He actually did talk about it a little bit at the last meet and greet. He told funny stories about how they wore the animal costumes an things like that. 🦘🦉🐝🐸
Oh, really? As long as he tells stories from that period, no matter the length, I'm hopeful 🤩
Would you like to share one with us, the community?
very good indeed. enjoyed this very detailed and extensive documentary/review. always been my fav tull album, just such a shame there wasn't atleast 1 soundboard recorded on the tour. all credit to you for all your hard work here.
Thank you so much pal 😃 it a real bliss that you enjoyed it ❤️ I concur, we need at least one soundboard recording from the TAAB and the APP tours, desperately.

Finally had time to sit down and watch this all the way through from start to finish. What a great job; informative and entertaining throughout. As a lifelong fan of Tull since first Aqualung in 1971 I think I know virtually all there is to know about the band, but watching this was certainly time well spent. Saw this concert at Boston Garden on 9/28/73 (the first of two nights in Boston preceding the tour's "wind-up" there the following night) and I would still rank it up there with best concert I've ever had the privilege of attending ... so hard after all these years to choose between Tull concerts for "Brick," "Passion Play", and "WarChild."
Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your Tull experience 😃❤️

It is a shame that there is no Live Concert footage by a professional Co. This is my favorite Concert of all. It is a Masterpiece.

Thank God for the people who sneaked cameras in and filmed these concerts because we would have had no footage at all from those early tours. We never would have seen Jeffrey doing his thing.
After such a massive work, an analysis of The Wall's tour might be a suitable challenge. Alternatively any previous Pink Floyd tour would do just as well.
Thank you very much Daniele 😉
The Wall will be done on episode 20, I need something really magnificent to end the first season.
But don't worry, the Animals Tour will be done on episode 8, hope that will do until the end of season 😉

When I saw them perform APP I'm sure there was a few violin players if my memory serves me well. Could be wrong?
Unfortunately, I haven't found evidence of the band playing with violinists during this tour.
@@RockIsDeadTheySay Leonard undoubtedly is referring to Tull's subsequent tour for the WarChild LP, during which they employed a 4-member female string quartet. Ian was at his absolute best as a live performer during the tours for Thick As A Brick, Passion Play, and WarChild ... absolutely brilliant rock theater.
Thanks for the clarification pal 😉 I didn't remember it 😅
This is a great video but one thing stuck out. Ian was still married to Jennie Franks at this time. Is there any factual basis to him dating Jane Colthorpe?
Hi Arend, thank you very much for your words 😃.
Actually there is an interview that Jane did with the lads from The Jethro Tull Group in 2014, on which Jane explains the situation in a more detailed way. I decided to gloss over it, because the story on itself it's rather sad and bitter, but I leave you the link if you want to read it:
www.jethrotullgroup.com/jane-colthorpe-passion-play-balleri
But in summary: Jane was told by Ian that his marriage with Jennie was over, so she moved in with him. They were a couple for around 12 to 15 months, and while Tull was on tour, she found out that Ian had already started a relationship with Shona. He never broke up with Jane, nor told her about his current marriage with Jennie, or his relationship with Shona.

@@RockIsDeadTheySay Thanks! I didn't know that.
BRAZIL!!!
I wish I could understand you…😢
:(
Well, what condition do you expect any hotel or lodging to be in after a bunch of cheap, dirty, scumbag rockstars have been in it for months? Certainly not as nice as if Jethro Tull have been there the whole time, no doubt! ;-)
That's true, you got the subtle reference to it 🥳, but if Tull stayed there longer, it would have started to smell like used codpieces and songs from the wood.
That was terrible, but don't regret it

Lose the background music. your accent is hard enough to understand. Sorry just my opinion.
Everyone has an opinion, and that is totally fine, but the music won't go away, sadly. If my accent is the problem, you can always choose to mute me and turn on the subtitles.

Interesting video... but I would have done without the extremely thick spanish accent of the narrator - it's quite annoying...
Yes, I know, I don't have money to hire a native English speaking narrator, but you can always choose to mute me and just read the subtitles 😉.

@@RockIsDeadTheySay I would have done for you for free, if I had known... but good job, anyway! 👍 (P.S. I didn't mean to sound ungrateful...)
That would have been awesome! There are more videos to come if you're interested. And don't worry, you weren't ungrateful by any means, one of the main downsides of this series is precisely that, and you haven't been the first one to tell me to be honest, so everything's fine 😉
This is the best progressive rock album ever made including the competitors Yes , Genesis , King Crimson and Pink Floyd . Better than Thick as a Brick.
