    Great explanation and thanks for the demonstration. Just got one of these from the thrift store, didn’t know what to expect but I seen the 1/4” jacks, and it didn’t run off batteries and figured what the hell. Pretty cool for $19.99!

    I had one when I was 14, bought another the last year. This time I'm not selling it. I love your way of showing what the CS5 can do all on it's own.

    Nice. I have two CS-5 = CS-15. The CS-5, CS-10 and CS-15 are very useful even today, even though they are from the 70's

    Repairing one of these at the moment, this synth has such interesting architecture for how limited it is. Love combining the PWM with filter mod, such a cool sound. Gonna be sad to give this one back...!

    I love the Yamaha CS line, from toylike CS01 to monstrous CS80! All different, all great instruments. I own CS01 with midi which is great for acid techno, and CS 5 which is also great fun! Cheers Maestro!

    I agonise about whether or not to keep mine. I have too many single oscillator mono synths and they're all different. I find the CS5 does that lovely snappy Chariots Of Fire intro sound very well. It also looks amazing! Thanks for your demo and tutorial, you have convinced me to keep it for a while longer :)

    I have two and will never part with them. Favorite tricks - LFO on a very slow speed > PWM with a bit of noise and a long release for massive apocalyptic bass and riding the frequency with the LFO at a fast speed for total destruction. Also does great noisy hi-hats which you can trigger with pulse signals and just ride the decay on the ADSR for motion.

    Ah...my first analog mono synth! Seemed limited when I first got it, but it's got some decent punch on the low-end and can sound pretty solid in a mix.

    Thanks Paolo for the video.
    I am trying to develop analog synthesizers with Shmittrighers and various filters and not having the synthesizer to make a comparison this video was useful to understand various sections of the synthesizer.
    Maybe why not, in the future some videos about analog synthesizers would be nice.

    Nice pronunciation of "vibrato".... just like an Italian. Are you from Italy? I am a CS-5 owner from Milan.
    Got my first CS-5 in a second hand shop in Stockholm 1989 for 800 Sek = 80 € that remained in Stockholm at a friends studio...(still working)
    Today...I am in Italy and I had to rebuy a "new" CS-5 second hand for 450 € .... worth every penny.
    Thanks for your tutorial.

    Really helpful! Thanks for explaining about the lines and the modular layout: I wasn't aware of that. Your patch demonstrations at the end are perfect: just what I was looking for. Quick question: do you think you could get some Vangelis type lead sounds a la Bladerunner from this synth? I know it's not a CS-80 but it's still in the family :)

      @DestroyER82 Před 3 lety +1

      Greetings sir I have CS-10 which is very close to CS-5 in terms of options... And to your question... Yes, you can! CS-5 uses same components as CS-80. To make that "flute" or "brass" sound its actually pretty straight forward.

    Has anyone experimented with running the output back through the external input of the CS-5 to get distortion/ feedback? This is an old minimoog trick that apparently works for the CS-10. I'm wondering if it can work for the CS-5

    I completely destroyed beyond recognition the OBX8 used in the Cindy Lauper show, together with a Yamaha CS-15 synth in a car accident on 1991. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! Sorry about that! I was returning home from a recording session at 4:00AM, fell asleep driving a Toyota Tercel and hit a truck from behind at 90 MPH. The Toyota which I used as a hat, It was a 3 door little piece of shit the rear door exploded, the two Anvil cases containing the keys one flew the CS ended like 25 Ft. from the car in the middle of the road and the other got opened I still wondering how, and the Obie shoved all the middle section of the keyboard right behind my head. They took 21 stitches inside and out behind my hard head, I almost lost an arm and the other one was cracked in a spiral fashion. The wounds hurt me some, but seen two of my preferred musical instruments at that time, in pieces really broke my heart like nothing else. I used to love those two keyboards a lot! Eventually a friend of mine fixed both of them and they ended like new. But it was a very sad experience; you don't know how much you can love your musical instruments. The CS was a gift from a girlfriend at that moment in time. The OBX8 was first bought by a guy in Puerto Rico from Mr. David Rosenthal, after a 1987 Cindy Lauper’s concert in San Juan. The buyer guy didn't know the real value of what he had bought and well …, I bought the instrument from him. Both were eventually sold to a keyboard collection and I didn't knew anything about them after that.

    Hi Paolo, I have the cs5 too, lovely synth. Do you find that there is away some leakage from the vca even with the initial level at 0? I can always here the note in the background when im not playing the keys. Thanks

    • @DestroyER82
      @DestroyER82 Před 3 lety +2

      Greetings sir, not sure if Paolo reads all comments so I ll try to help. This issue can be caused by few things. First reason is quite simple and that its just dirty / oxidised initial level pot that even on lowest level leaks some voltage and keep VCA open. Other issues might need tech to check it up and thats leaking envelope generator or LFO mod branch or worst scenario - VCA is always partially open and is leaking by itself.

    • @FreerangeFX
      @FreerangeFX Před 3 lety

      @@DestroyER82 thanks for the feedback, When the cs5 is directed into my keyboard amp its pretty annoying if it's off key. Can here the lfo affecting it too so it's not just from the vco. Will try cleaning that initial level pot as you suggested. My cs5 had a Sub mod added at some point I always wondered if that was responsible!
      Paolo always gets some great sounds out of his and it's great to see its get used and not forgotten amongst his many other cool synth.

    • @DestroyER82
      @DestroyER82 Před 3 lety +2

      @@FreerangeFX Ah allright, yeah try it. It ll perfect if it ll be fixed just that simply. And yeah, when you are at it, just clean all the pots. Sub mod shouldnt be responsible, thats done on VCO part of signal chain. CS-5 even it is low end of "CS synths spectrum" is really very capable. I have done recently whole track using only CS-10 (including all drums etc..) it was a lot of fun. :)

  • @svenv.3068
    @svenv.3068 Před 3 lety +1

    Paolo, I was wondering, can you do the feedback/self oscillation trick with the CS-5 by somehow splitting the signal and sending it back into the external input? Dovinia has a video demonstration of this with the CS-10, but I tried with CS-5 and couldn't quite get it to work.
    I'm thinking maybe from the mixer, send auxiliary output back into the CS-5. What do you think? czcams.com/video/E3PLjAKDPOw/video.html
