    *ABOUT CHILDHOOD'S END*
    Childhood's End, from Pink Floyd's seventh album Obscured By Clouds, has been remixed from the original master tapes in 2016 by Andy Jackson and Damon Iddins.
    In February 1972, the band were already playing The Dark Side Of The Moon live and starting to record its songs, but production was briefly halted when they accepted their second commission for filmmaker Barbet Schroeder, to create the soundtrack for his feature film La Vallée.
    In the last week of February 1972, Pink Floyd started work, at Strawberry Studios in Herouville, France, and as David Gilmour later described: “We sat in a room, wrote, recorded, like a production line.” The result was 10 pieces of music: six songs and four instrumentals, which Melody Maker described as “some of the most aggressive instrumentals the Floyd have recorded.”
    David Gilmour’s Childhood's End was one of the few songs from the soundtrack to be included in Pink Floyd's live shows and was featured on European dates, starting on December 1, 1972, and at the start of the band's March 1973 tour of North America, usually with an extended instrumental passage.

      And no doubt developed from early sketches of "Time". There are so many similarities:
      1. the two songs are structured the same way
      2. the keys are very close
      3. the bass/rhythm guitar groove is almost the same
      4 the lyrics in both travel from childhood and innocence to understanding of human mortality
      5 the lyrics in both end by breaking the fourth wall (if the Breathe reprise is omtted)
      Far from coincidences if you ask me...

    Childhood's End (Gilmour) 4:31
    You shout in your sleep.
    Perhaps the price is just too steep.
    Is your conscience at rest
    If once put to the test?
    You awake with a start
    To just the beating of your heart.
    Just one man beneath the sky,
    Just two ears, just two eyes.
    You set sail across the sea
    Of long past thoughts and memories.
    Childhood's end, your fantasies
    Merge with harsh realities.
    And then as the sail is hoist,
    You find your eyes are growing moist.
    All the fears never voiced
    Say you have to make your final choice.
    Who are you and who am I
    To say we know the reason why?
    Some are born; some men die
    Beneath one infinite sky.
    There'll be war, there'll be peace.
    But everything one day will cease.
    All the iron turned to rust;
    All the proud men turned to dust.
    And so all things, time will mend.
    So this song will end.

      @josephbarbarie7805 Před 9 měsíci +3

      Actually -- gonna disagree with you Mason's playing here. First of all, this is an amazing song, and yes, it is one of PF's most overlooked.
      HOWEVER -- Mason inadvertently uses a "shuffle" timing on some fills -- where he inserts tom-toms in between the accented set of chords which end the verse, G major, D major, A minor. The song clearly has a "straight 16th note" feel -- listen to the very beginning, where there's the keyboard and very subtle beat (I think it's either a guitar low E, or a bass), that is very obviously a straight row of 16th notes. Also, listen to Dave's rhythm playing during the verse -- also very straight, if slightly syncopated, 16ths.
      By applying a "swung" feel in those fills, Mason makes the beat indeterminate -- and this is problem of sub-division You can't insert triplets into a song that has already been subdivided as straight 16ths. You might be able to do it if the subdivision were only 8ths, or quarters, but not when the beat so clearly insists on straight 16ths. The listener's ear isn't sure if this is an attempt to "drag" the rhythm, or compress it. In fact, what's funny, is that in some of those "fills," he actually gets the 16th sub correct -- and it sounds much cleaner, and more rhythmically "alert," or "tense" (which is what you want). Fills should push a song from section-to-section, not distract from its progress.
      I realize some people will say, "this is all a matter of feel." Sorry, nope. It's just incorrect.
      Okay -- let the flame war begin.

      I'd love for his output to be more substantial but when you have your wife as your co-lyricist it's pretty easy to see how those arguments are made. The guy was not a lyrical force.

    • @eduardogutierrezcastillo2767
      @eduardogutierrezcastillo2767 Před 7 lety +10

      Sean Lange actually, this song came many many years before Gilmour met Polly.
      This came on the early 70s and he married Polly on 90s
      So the lyrcs were 100 % written by him.
      I recommend you to listen the narrow way ( another song written and played 100% by Gilmour) from an album called Ummagumma (1969)
      The lyrcs from that song are blowing mind.
      Gilmour had all the talent to write amazing lyrcs, just like waters.
      But he preferred to give the vibe and sound to the band.

    • @seanlange6715
      @seanlange6715 Před 7 lety +4

      Eduardo Gutiérrez Castillo I'm well aware of when Childhoods End was written, you never saw me say anyone cowrote that song, so you seem confused. The bands history suggests otherwise than what you're saying about Gilmour's lyrical ability. If he was a strong enough lyricist on his own, why would he have his wife co-write his songs as soon as Roger Waters left? This practice continued throughout his solo albums. He never stood on his own as a lyricist and that's not really disputed by anyone who knows Floyd.

      I couldn't agree more! Anything before Revolver by Beatles is really quite meh (imo) and Rolling Stones, well Rolling Stones is good, really good, but nothing compare to Pink Floyd!
      Pink Floyd is so much more rich than most of these other classic rock bands! While other classic rock bands were busy writing songs mostly about romantic loves, sex, drug, women, Pink Floyd always wrote songs like Matilda Mother, Corporal Clegg, Point Me At The Sky from the beginning! I mean even before making commercially successful albums like DSOTM, WYWH, The Wall.

    I want this song played at my funeral. It's such an impactful song for me. My dad played pink floyd while I was growing up, he was an abusive person. tried to leave my family multiples times and successfully did in 2019, still picks up my sisters every weekends though. I'd rather not come over. Covert narccisist, it's saddening to me. I'll never have any other dad, you know? All my memories as a 6-7 year old were my dad playing DSOTM in the car, the desert-like surroundings, Oman, we lived there for a year because he had an english teaching job there. Growing up, now I just remember how sad I was, but still even until now I've loved pink floyd and have always listened to them. I don't listen to the wall or dsotm/WYWH anymore even though it's what I'd always come back to. It's what I listened to at 13-15 while I was really in a lot of agony when all my repressed memories of child abuse came back. I really spiraled and saw no way out of it, really wanted to die every day and harmed a lot. Never got any therapy,
    but I'm 16 now. I found this song last year, and it's the one song that feels like me the most. The feeling that childhood was really taken from your hands and just having to live with it. The message from Pink Floyd has always been rather existential which is what I really enjoy, but this one resonates with me the most. I've always thought of death, life, humans, I don't know but just philosophical related things. Piecing things together in my own head about how I feel about the world.
    It also feels freeing, because it wasn't a song my dad showed me. It's my song, the one song I can call my own in my head.

      @kasperlarsen4060 complete opposite lmao. In my early 20s I went to college, had a best friend, girlfriend for 4 years, sober, full time job, fit etc.
      Finished college but burned out. Lost the girl. Lost my friend. Starting doing drugs and drinking. Have a herniated disc and can't workout anymore. Might die in spine surgery. Work a dead end job.

    Pink Floyds facebook page was asking fans what they wanted to hear just before David Gilmour went on the road with 'Rattle That Lock.' Although the survey obviously had no say in the setlist it was interesting to see this track mentioned a few times - I think I also suggested this one - a genuine Gilmour masterpiece from someone who always claimed he couldn't write a decent song alone.
    I wonder if the survey had any bearing on the attention lavished here. A great mix on an excellent track.
    I have always said Floyd fans shouldn't talk about 'Obscured...' because it's so good we should keep it to ourselves!!

    You shout in your sleep.
    Perhaps the price is just too steep.
    Is your conscience at rest
    If once put to the test?
    You awake with a start
    To just the beating of your heart.
    Just one man beneath the sky,
    Just two ears, just two eyes.
    You set sail across the sea
    Of long past thoughts and memories.
    Childhood's end, your fantasies
    Merge with harsh realities.
    And then as the sail is hoist,
    You find your eyes are growing moist.
    All the fears never voiced
    Say you have to make your final choice.
    Who are you and who am I
    To say we know the reason wh men die
    Beneath one infinite sky.
    There'll be war, there'll be peace.
    But everything one day will cease.
    All the iron turned to rust;
    All the proud men turned to dust.
    And so all things, time will mend.
    So this song will end.
