The Grimaldi family has ruled over the tiny but beautiful and wealthy nation of Monaco since 1297. And for just as long they have been shockingly unlucky in love. Since the dynasty was supposedly cursed by a witch in the 14th century they have endured far more than their fair share of terrible mismatches, mistresses, an affair with King Louis XIV, abandonment, divorce, estrangement and tragic death. From Rainier I to Grace Kelly, Princess Caroline, Princess Stéphanie, Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, we explore the unfortunate love lives of the Monegasque royal family.

If you notice from the Grimaldi family tree, there have been many generations in a row with few children: Albert, Louis and Charlotte were only children, Rainier had only one sister, and Grace had only 3 kids. This means the prince's family is very small in number: there is no local aristocracy or royal cousins like in the UK, it's just Albert and his immediate family for every social event. There also is the tradition of not marrying anybody local, so the Monaco princes don't marry anybody they might have grown up with and met in school or at work like many people do. Instead they've had torrid affairs or brief encounters with foreigners that don't always last.

People always hoped for a happy union but they were rare. In most aristocratic unions once the dynastic obligations were taken care of it was common for the husband to take mistresses. On occasion the wives were able to as well. In the old days people tended to be much more clear eyed in their approach to marriage. The whole "and they lived happily ever after" bit was understood to belong to fairly tales, not the real world.

@@0912sooli it usually doesn’t. The power dynamics in Indian arranged marriages are skewed from the start, in favour of the man, because India is a misogynistic and patriarchal society. So once married, the bride has to live with her husband’s family, and it’s extremely common for them and the husband to horribly abuse the bride. The bride/wife can’t even go to the police because the cops in India don’t care much about domestic violence and abuse and women’s rights. The woman can try to get a divorce, but divorce is so highly stigmatised in India, that if she’s a divorcee, she will forever become a social pariah. Women are usually also expected to stay home and not allowed to work after marriage, which means that she’s dependant on her husband financially, which makes it even harder to leave a bad marriage. So, tldr, most arranged marriages are far worse off than what most divorced couples in the west experience. It’s a horrible and cruel system.

What an interesting story. I honestly feel really bad for the poor woman Rainier raped, no wonder she cursed him and his family with marital unhappiness. Honestly, if I were at a ball, like Maria Caterina I'd rather sit with the old ladies as I'm not much on dancing (if I ever attend a dance these days I'd most likely sit out and constantly refuse offers to dance). As for the curse, this family has a lot of marital unhappiness to the point where you'd think a curse was at work (and there are those who think that Charlene, the current Princess of Monaco, is a victim of the curse), so I'm not surprised that people thought there was one on the family back then and now. But then again, maybe it's just a very long string of poor choices that lead to long-term consequences like this one.

When I was growing up, the royal family of Monaco was HUGELY popular in the US. People magazine was especially enamored with covering them. Caroline and Stephanie were constantly is the tabloids. They were so beautiful, and Caroline’s children got a lot of attention too for their beauty and wealth from a young age. With Grace Kelly in their genes, no wonder, and of course that explains the American fascination. I’m kinda surprised it’s fallen away as much as it has, while the British royal family remained popular stateside well before Meghan came into the picture.
Admittedly, as I grew older, I encountered tabloids less and less, but with the ubiquity of the Internet growing alongside me, I’m still surprised it appears they’ve really dropped so much from the interests of mainstream gossip. It’s not like the fodder isn’t still there, it’s probably just in the wrong generation. I suppose the younger generation isn’t dramatic enough and the older generation’s antics are no longer marketable to the current 18-49 target demographic for everything that’s deemed to matter.

    Another fantastic video from Lindsay!
Might I give a suggestion? Even though you've talked about them a couple times before, I'd love to see a more detailed video on Mary I of England or Empress Mathilda!

Disgusting how these families have lived in excess and wealth free to do whatever they like while the people slave away. And please explain to me why a prime minister lives in a palace in modern times.

But isn’t Monaco super rich? I mean it’s called the playground of millionaires! Monaco’s poverty rate is actually zero and 32% of it’s residents are millionaires. As one person in the comments also said, Monaco does not levy personal income tax to its residents.
      (Edit:)
Oh well, I guess you don’t mean only Monaco but hey I just wanted to point out that at least despite having such family Monaco is actually prosperous only the royal family’s relations are twisted.

I doubt it is a matter of a curse but rather an immoral, feckless family that is focused on wealth and pleasure. It also seems apparent that based on Grace Kelly's stable of married lovers during her Hollywood days, she did seem to bring any morality to the mix.

If we notice both Diana Spencer & Grace Kelly's life was somewhat similar. Both got married to royal prince, Charles cheated on Diana whereas Rainier III cheated on Grace , both had a bad marriage, both women happily raised their children, threw themselves in charity to forget everything & help others, both women were more beautiful & popular than their husbands who were actual Prince & at last both were in a car at their last moment at a very young age( Grace had a stroke in car & Diana had a car accident)

My paternal side is from Monaco, when my great grandmother was alive,in 2003,when I was 11 years old,she told me that her great grandma was a misteress of the Prince and had royal backgrounds in Monaco and Liechtenstein! One of them was Marchioness in Monaco, the other was Duke of Liechtenstein back in the The 1800's!Apparently then my family migrated to Asia,to China and then North Afghanistan! My great grandma was born in 1913,right before the first World War. Her parents were scared something would happen to them when she was just 2,so they moved to Asia and came back in 1928,and left again in 1939,and came in 1952,but my great grandma's father was in Asia and unexpectedly died,so she went back to Asia and stayed their for 35 years with her family, but she came in 1987,and stayed in Monaco until 1994 until she moved to England which she stayed their until she died Unfortunately on 2014!She fits the cursed love Monaco story lol,she was married 3 times! My grandma was born in 1939,so she spent no time in Monaco in her childhood, she came back to Monaco when she was 13,and then she stayed their for 12 years and moved back to Asia and then stayed their for 18 years until she moved to London in 1980 when she was 41,she only had 2 kids and one of them passed from cancer at 2,and her husband left her so she got remarried in 1990 when she was 51,and is currently 82,my mother has craziest of them all!She was born in 1967,her mother was ill and her father wasn't around so she was in an orphanage for 18 years and left in 1985,she moved to London, she eventually met my dad and she knew her mother was in London and tried to find her,she eventually did in 1992,they had called and sent letters but didn't really ever see eachother! Then my mother divorced, moved to Asia and then Africa, quit her lawyer job, became a traveler and then dated an African dude which left her pregnant, she moved moved Australia where she saw her ex husband and they got remarried in 2004,and divorced because my mom had to go back to Asia and he didn't want to,and got remarried this year!I don't even know why my parents have got married so many times,it's been goung on since blimming 1992,I was born in 1993,for 29 whole years theybe divorced and got remarried 4 times!
