    My brother and I fish Wester Elchies on the River Spey for early run Atlantic Salmon, these Spring fish known as Springers are rare to catch as it's so early in the season but when it comes together, there's great sport to be had.

    Well done to you both. Fished Wester Elchies for two days in May 2016, had 3 fish, nice water there. Just watch the wading on the Rhynd Pool, very lumpy!

      Thanks Russell, well done on your fish, I bet May is a great time to be on there.. The Rhynd is extremely tricky. John Ashley Cooper describes it as the worst pool for wading he'd ever done haha, great fishing though so worth it..

      @@jpsflyfishing Have never fished there since. I am on Rothes & Aikenway and Orton later this month so hoping there are a few more fish about then. Your fish was from the pool between the 2 huts, Delagyle I think just below the spot you had the kelt and your brothers fish was from Pol Macree opposite the Delagyle hut! What a day for you both. The Spey will have you hooked now, in my opinion, the best of the big 4. Getting on it though, that’s another matter. It’s a special river, when they are running you see them, always seems to have a good head of fish in it.

      @@jpsflyfishing Read page 35 of J A Coopers book, interesting story. It regales the capture of a big fish I think maybe hooked in Pol Macree or thereabouts. I am on Orton on Wed 22nd then Thurs/Fri on Rothes. Noticed you fished the Orkla, been there a couple of times,special place.

    How do you determine that it's a springer rather than a kelt?

    • @jpsflyfishing
      @jpsflyfishing  Před rokem

      Can be difficult sometimes but Kelts being last years fish are slimmer with soft bellies, often have gill maggots, damaged fins and usually don’t fight very hard, a springer is fresh from the sea so is likely but not always a hard fighting fish, the profile of the fish is more chunky making the head look smaller in comparison to a kelt, the belly is much firmer to the touch. They may have sea lice on still, no gill maggots etc.

      Ragged fins and a look at the vent also , but not all springers are bars of silver, had a few on the dee in early feb that had been in the river for a couple of weeks and had a bit of colour.. its a bit unusual to see feb springers up at grantown..used to live a stones throw from the spey but much preferred the nairn and the little lossie.

      @@peterwalls308 it's funny you mention the river Nairn. My family (uncle and cousin) have the farm at Milton in Cawdor and I've been trying for many years to catch a Salmon there (legally of course!) but I'm a bit clueless...hence my question! It's quite a difficult pastime to get into on your own.

    • @peterwalls308
      @peterwalls308 Před rokem +1

      @@ping7979 know miltons well, had a few monster sea trout out at night. With the nairn you have to cover the ground. Simple tactics floating line , i used small to medium brass tubes were as gordon rennie would never be seem without his two allys shrimps . It made things a little tricky when the association lost the right hand bank as my number one pools were cockles and lower down at the pools above the hut pool . Do the leg work and bingo.
