I think people in restaurants noticed that you are not a tourist, but you moved to the island. Local people likes tourists, they spend money and leave the island. I think they do not like people, that move to their island, because they are the reason of flats and houses high prices.
About your roof. This foam on your roof will be destroyed by UV radiation. The shouldn't leave this like that.
All my information are bad, but don't give up. The most important thing is you feel that Madeira is your home. I feel the same, but first I have to move there.

My husbands family left Madeira back in 1910, would he be treated like everyone else who moves their? Or would his roots on the island ease their cold behavior?

Tradespeople are seemingly terrible in every country. They never call back, they're late, many do shoddy work (like leaving foam gap filler on your roof), many do half a job then go away for some reason, coming back whenever. It's crazy. If you find good tradespeople, you've found gold.
Best of luck on your adventure!

The trades guys mugging you off, happens in Lincolnshire too. We also got ignored in Funchal at a crepe/ice cream place. I wish I'd been ignored by the scam artists after my euros lol. Saying all that I would go back if I could afford it

Don`t give up, better do something that nothing at all , I am doing my roof at the moment and I know how hard it is , everything can be repaired its just time consuming and there are no many tradesman on the island, for the dump there is a product you can find here and its called acqua stop by CEYS, for the roof tiles go in there when its raining and see where the water comes from, with time the raft start to bend and need to be pushed back as tiles are no longer lever start to have gaps and usually thats where the water comes from, you need to block the back of the tiles from inside with tiles foams or concrete, you should not see any light from inside the roof.

Wow so much here to talk about. Don't remove the foam from the roof, you'll have a gap there and it will leak there. Really hate that you got ignored at the restaurant. I would hope that this is not an ongoing issue and that other places treat you better. I have heard from others that getting skilled labor can be hit or miss, and that it's part of the culture. Your outlook at the end of the video is so beautiful, hang on to that. Thank you for continuing to share your journey, and good luck getting your home the way you want it! 🙂

Speak with a lawyer about the problems - the cracks, mould and crumbling neighbours wall should have been mentioned during the sale and it seems theybhid these things to the prospective buyer (which is not legal). But try and find a no win no fee one so you don't burden yourself with any more costs.

As I mentioned in the other video, is not surprising that you’re having hard times with “handymans”… they get well paid (most of the times net), some don’t even know how to fix it (in Portuguese we say desenrascam), never get the things done in time… yup, you will have better luck if you know someone who knows someone 🤷🏻‍♂️
Regarding the rest of the video… I would say that is the actual feeling in Portugal tbh, foreigners that come. I can tell you that Portuguese people ate extremely tired of many things and some are not engaging with foreigners as before (due to tourism and many other things) - I know you are talking about the restaurants…And Btw, yeah learn Portuguese (but the “European” one 😅😅)

Are you friends with any handymen in the UK? If so maybe you could buy one a plane ticket, have him stay at your house for a week and fix all the things you can think of. It sounds like importing your own worker is the only way to get these important things done (or, of course, continue to do them yourself).

That's a classic Portuguese roof, no membrane, lichens on the shingles and punky wood underneath. I'm replacing mine with sandwich panels as soon as the dry season hits.
You're likely best to rebuild/replace all of it. Otherwise, you'll constantly be chasing problems.
