How To Weave... WITH WOOD!

- I show you how to make a rattan weave! Arts, crafts, home decor, and weaving with wood all in one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Drew Scott / Lone fox Collab video: • DIY URBAN OUTFITTERS R...
What up! So today I'm going to show you how to make this rattan weave lil thing. Then I use the same techniques to make this wood weave picture overlay.
First a huge thanks to Drew Scott/Lone fox for helping me with the Collab. ( He was the brains behind the collab) I'll show you how to make the rattan weave sheet, and he is going to show you what to do with them🙌🏻
First take an old picture frame. You will be drilling holes in it that are the same size or a lil bit bigger than 3/4''. You'll be using dowels that are 3/4" to hold the reed in place. (later in the video I show you how to weave using scotch tape instead of holes... so that is an option too)
I made the holes in the frame 1" apart and the reed was 1/4" wide.. that made the holes in the wave 3/4"... so the math there is what ever size you want the hole to be.. add the width of the reed to that, and the number you get is how far apart you should make your holes (how far apart each reed is in the weave). Hopefully that makes sense...
I then cut the dowels into 1.5" pieces.. and to help them go into the holes I tapped on side of it (did that with the pencil sharpener).
So to begin the rattan weave you will want to soak your reed in water for like 5-10 minutes--That will help the reed bend with out breaking...
Start by making horizontal--horizontal meaning left to right--lines with the reed going from hole to hole. Then make vertical stripes over the top of the horizontal ones. Then you will make another layer of horizontal ones that go over the top of Both of those.
On that third layer... its going horizontal like the first layer.. but you don't want it to lie directly on top. Make sure they are all on one side (upper or lower side). I put mine on the side that is closer to me (lower side).
Once those are done you will be doin a 4th layer that is vertical. again make sure they are all on either the right or left side of the other vertical layer of reed strips ( I put mine on the left). This is were you will do the first weaving part.
Do the opposite of the lower vertical strip. In my case the lower strips were first under then over the horizontal reeds... So on the new vertical reed it was first over then under... and you continued that pattern.
Next you will make the diagonal lines. Pick a corner and you will be weaving over the two horizontal reeds and under the two vertical ones. I started on the top left and worked my way down in a zig zag type pattern.. over under over under...
You continue that until you have all the diagonal weaves done ( a good way to check that is to see if the lil circles/square spaces have the top right corner and bottom left corner covered by the diagonal reads.
You'll then do the opposite diagonal line. You'll be doing the same thing only switch... so if you were going over the two horizontal reeds you will now be going under and same goes for the two vertical reeds...
On mine I start on the bottom left.. it doesn't really matter where you start, It was just easiest for me to start in a corner...
This diagonal reed should cover the two corners on the square that are still open..
once you are all done... because we are just cutting it out of the loom and not weaving it to a chair.. add some type of glue (I used super glue) to the edge weaves so it will stay together.
once the glue dries... You can cut it out:)
So I got 1000 ft reed off of amazon and made about 1,400 square inches of the weave... so if my math is right. with every foot of reed you can make 1.4 square inch of reed.
So.. if you just want one 20" x 24" sheet.. You'll need like 350 feet of reed.
Here is the link to the reed I got off amazon:
265 feet of reed: amzn.to/2mKL7Ha
1000 feet of reed: amzn.to/2mLnLkQ

i love how you show every time you mess up instead of cutting it out
Thanks:) I mess up lots so.. for sure will have more to come
Me too! It honestly makes the process more interesting to watch. I love seeing how trial & error shapes the final project. It’s nice to see some one make amazing art & know they don’t get it right every time. I know it helps me take more risks & now take failures so much to heart.
kov3ly i was just thinking about that
messing up is a crucial part of learning something new. Love these videos
Always impressed by your ability to take such a variety of art techniques and adapt them into something you love! I could take some notes, haha.
Kasey... Let’s exchange notes.. (I don’t know if that translates how I want but I think you’ll get what I’m saying) haha smh
Omg One of my favourite CZcamsrs commented him.
Kasey please get him the recognition he deserves. Shout him out please.
This is the kind of content I come to CZcams for. Cool tutorials I tell myself I’ll do eventually but I never actually will
same though...
This is part of what makes me love CZcams so much
I’m never going to do this but I still watch all of these
🙌🏻🙌🏻
STILL OBSESSED WITH THIS VIDEO! WATCHING IT FOR THE 3RD TIME
dude.. I've said it once I'll say it again. you're the biggest sweet heart! 🥰
Pro tip from a fellow weaver: I've never worked with Aspen bark, but many weaving materials benefit from being dried completely first and then soaked until they become flexible again right before weaving. Some materials do fine if you weave them fresh, but many shrink or become brittle. Just figured I would share, since you've taught me so much- for instance, the effectiveness of super glue when dealing with baskets/weaves that will not cooperate, haha :) beautiful stuff, keep it up!
ahhh wish I would have done that! thanks for the tip:)
@@Shmoxd & Anden, this was an awesome tip! Thanx! Bryan, found you through Lone Wolf! LUV you both! Thanx for the inspiation!
Where can someone buy a bulk amount of anything like this or close to it?
No one:
This guy: applies superglue with his bare skin
I wasn’t prepared to see it even after reading this comment
Omg that’s what I was thinking 🙈
haha.. my fingers got alll messed up
I specifically came to the comment section in hopes I wasn’t the only person who saw that
Doesn't everyone? ...
"bc im lazy" and literally does weaving
Victoria Lopes he’s not even lazy, it’s just that “modern problems require modern solutions”. we basically invented stuff like cars and elevators because we were lazy lol
@@estheryang1247 lol laziness make us creative i guess
@@Victoria9Girl I guess I'm super creative then.. haha
@@Shmoxd with great powers comes great responsibilities
he does it for clout
This channel always reminds me to keep trying, I feel like whenever you have to go to plan B or plan C, you don’t get discouraged and it always turns out so well! It’s something I really admire. Thanks for the inspiration to make cool things and be a better person ☺️
glad I could help:)
What if u run out of letters and for example:
Plan z didnt work what am i supposed to do now
why did I read "how to weave with food?"
edit: no but fr, my mom has these old chairs that are really f*cked up but she really loves them, and they have this weaved wood on them and this video is literally telling me I should fix them myself. Thanks, bro, I think she's going to like that 😆
I'm excited for the skull weaving, it's getting to be fall!
Dude! You totally should! I remember breaking a few as a kid and feeling SUPER bad because they cost a fortune to have re-caned for you, and of course the internet was in its infancy, so there weren’t nearly as many free learning resources! It’s a good thing the pattern is complex but not difficult or confusing. Just time consuming!
In my theatre department a kid spend half the term doing 4 chairs for a show in between his classes 😆
You read it like that cause your hungry.
Would be a nice present for birthday or christmas. I repaired a chair for my grandma once and she loved it and talks about it every now and then.
Wow, I really loved this collab. I really want to make one of the wall sconces that Lone Fox made.
This collab was unbe-weave-able. \*finger guns*
yassssss!! 👉🏻💥"Pew pew"
Every Mexican grandma has at least one chair with that wooden weave
ojodeoro they must be good for hot weather because they’re pretty popular here too

How many Latinos watching this rn to fix yo' mama's rocking chairs 😂

Holaaa 😂😂😂

Ahhh i'm not latina but damn right, my grandparents have a rocking chair with this weave! Thanks girl i was trying to remember where i've seen that pattern!
also eastern Indians
currently inspired to rattan weave my whole life. thnx.
if you would make me a suite .. please and thanks.
This was unbelieWEAVABLE.
yessssss!
In Mexico, we have chairs that have that in the back. They are comfy and fresh.
My favorite channel on CZcams! Post more often please!!!!!!
That's not lazy it's just *genius* 🤙

You are one of my most inspirational CZcamsrs
Dreaming of all the furniture that can be reupholstered with this 🙌🏽🙌🏽
😴🙌🏻
Love this!!!!!!
well, you made me more aware of how my neighbor do his job for furnitures (rocking chair, chairs, tables, beds, etc). I also see him pass the rattan through homemade holes in a metal sheet (similar to cheese grater) to make sure all of the lengths are same width and doesn't have splinters, also he taps the second rattan to make the gaps smaller and tighter. I believe he also swipe the rattan with candle wax to make the weaving easier and faster. I always see him working on old furnitures that need the rattan/reeds replaced and sometimes with new furnitures for his clients.
nice vid.
This is truly amazing! Great job!
☺️🙏🏻
This is a craft that my country does a lot. It's kind of a traditional thing here, and it's really nice seeing a video like this here!
