I had the privilege to hear Luther at a sound check in the early 1990's and he sounds EXACTLY like this! It was mid-day with no band, no taped music, mixing board, nothing but simply getting sound levels for the show at Reunion Arena in Dallas. He was in street clothes and I decided then and there that he had the clearest, prettiest natural voice I will ever hear the rest of my life. He was and always will be missed.
That's not an ordinary audience, Empress. That's the live performance at the 1988 NAACP Image Awards. The men and women there are studded with gifted talent. I think that's why the audience shows a tremendous appreciation for Luther's performance. They know; from their own talent, how great a performance they're witnessing. He really put on a show for them.
I was lucky enough not only to have seen Luther perform live 7 times but I also happened to be in the audience for this performance as well. Absolute perfection! Anyone whose voice can affect you emotionally has truly mastered their craft and Mr. Vandross exceeded this beyond measure. Happy Heavenly Birthday! So glad I found this on his day!
I remember this performance vividly. I was in college and many of us were in our dorm rooms on a freezing cold Saturday night. The funny thing is I remember people would debate who the best singer was. After this performance I remember people saying “ok Luther’s that dude” LOL
Towards the end of Luther’s tribute, when the camera zooms in up close on Dionne and she wipes away a tear, you can definitely see the family resemblance with Whitney. I’m sure she must have also performed at this event?
Fat Luther, skinny Luther, or medium Luther, love them all. Vocals💯💯. Stand Up!! Easy Singer. That's him just singing by himself gotta hear him with his backing singers live.
Burt Bacharach is the king of beasts today. Hits for Luther Dionne Aretha Roberta Stevie wonder You've personally probably gotten a standing ovation singing Burt Bacharach.
Luther said Dionne Warwick was his musical inspiration, why he covered so many songs she performed (and written for her by Burt B), beyond their hit duet. He made them his in covers.
This was a signature of his live performances. No one could sing like Luther! Usher who?? NeYo who??? Pick any current singers who??? This is a very famous song by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, originally made famous by Dionne Warwick but Luther made it his very own by the way he performed it live
There are a few singers I adore as much as Luther but if it was a competition for best male singer of all time, it would have to be him. It's just effortless, God given skill. People could learn to be as technically gifted as him but they would never have that velvet tone. One of a kind.
Kindred spirits! I just did a Luther reaction and the Paetrons must of heard my cries for this man to request this for Empress to react to! Whew!! This man vocally!!!!!! 😍😍😍
Not a singer alive or dead that can match Luther Live......was able to see him in concert and he sounds exactly like this......he plays with the sound and makes it new each time.
I saw this when it aired live. I was at my cousin house and we were all playing bid whist. We all paused and stop and watch this performance. It was magical and I thank god I was recording it on my VCR. Yes, the VCR…..lol. I personally saw Luther perform live many times though out here in Cali.
His records gotten better during his music career just as his singing did even when on live or in the singing booth. My momma was the reason I was listening to this soul man Luther Vandross fr!
This may be my favorite live performance by any-damn-body! (And so far - my favorite reaction by Empress💖). Luther was such a showman who knew exactly how to captivate and win over an audience with his spellbinding mastery of his vocal instrument! I also love watching the sheer delight from Dionne and other audience members! What he did with iconic song standards like this one and The Carpenters' song 'Superstar' is truly amazing! There are also some pretty humorous stories going around about what a DIVA he was, too! For instance, when En Vogue went on tour as his opening act, Luther gave then gals a list of colors they absolutely could not wear...and nothing on their costumes were allowed to sparkle!🤣 So glad you enjoyed this performance!!!
I guess the first time I heard Luther Vandross was on a Folgers commercial or KFC or something. Then he came out with The Glow of Love and I was a fan immediately. I’m 65 and every time I hear this I still tear up.
For me, Luther’s voice is tied with Frank Sinatra’s as the best male voice of the past century. And both will still be listened to a hundred years from now. Was Luther gay? Yes. Does it matter? Yes. Why? Because Luther kept himself in the closet for fear of losing fans. He thought women wouldn’t buy his music if they knew he was gay. But he didn’t understand. They knew. And it really didn’t matter... Because.The.Voice.
Unfortunately, it did matter at that time. Women may have suspected, but if he'd actually came out it likely would've ruined his career. The same way that singer or choir director at church was suspected to maybe be gay, but things changed if they actually came out and were open about it. We're talking about back when male R&B artists sales would drop if they got married, better yet came out as gay. A lot of women liked to believe those guys were singing to them and actually being off the market ruined that fantasy. It's actually part of the reason why some male singers would always say they were single, even if they were with someone. The image was just as important as the talent.
When I see this clip of Luther I instantly think of Frank Sinatra. Now, technically, Sinatra was not as good of a singer as Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. However, he knew how to craft a certain sound [as a non-musician]
Lawrence welk. One of the best shows of all time. Weekly event before music videos. An orchestra in different sets. Everybody dressed up doing whatever was popping at the time. But like just really good pretty session cats doing the hits. It's the kind of show you would want to do today. Imagine hearing a song on the radio and bringing it to your buddies and playing the brakes off of it because you and your buddies are the finest musicians on earth and you have everything every instrument and vocal combination live. Nadia's theme. Aka young and the restless aka no more drama is wonderful to mesmerizing.
🔥🔥I can't believe I never saw this reaction! Dis my joint. I liked Dionne Warwicks version but Luther's version has always been the one for me! That whooo-oo-oooo he does had all the ladies throwing their panties on stage! 😂😂😂
There's a live concert performance on CZcams you could watch. There's nothing like seeing him in person but he performed like this every single time, and it seems like nothing to him. He was amazing.
Please react to more Luther? Also, go check out Lisa Fisher singing How Can I Ease The Pain Live in Japan. It is amazing like this and will blow you away
Always loved this performance mmits, amazing and it's just so loose and fluid.. a masterclass in showboating... The variations... O my days. Dionne's own version is fantastic but this is in a league of its own. Luther is in a league of his own. R. I. P..

Yep. Denzel Washington introduced him before he started singing
Exactly, I said, the same thing in that audience are some of the best singers and entertainers of that generation, and Luther had them mesmerized.

Just to let you know, I’ve watched several reactions to this video and yours is this most authentic and real! You are so fun to watch !
Wow I appreciate that!
Luther did Wembley stadium in England. 80,000 people each night. Three nights in a row. This man was a legend. Great reaction. I'm a new subscriber.

FLAWLESS. Luther gave me chills. Forever obsessed w/ the Dionne version.

The song was wrote by Burt Bacharah and Hal David or Dionne Warwik, Luther loveed Doinne Warwick an he song that song to her.
Simply the BEST😊😊
You get a sub for picking up on what Kanye sample
Tiana Taylor does look like a young Diane Warwick, I never even realized that.
