great guide, thank you. also for the scan exposure bias, if you include the film borders in the image you can use them.

Thats does help if you have perfect light seals :) i sometimes have mixed results with them ;p

Great video! In your other video, you showed how to convert the negatives into positives in the SilverFast software. For editing purposes on darktable, would you select color positive film to keep it the scan a negative, and then go into darktable to convert into the positives?

Yes, that is a way you can do it as well if you want to do the conversion yourself. And scan the negative into a raw format instead of a jpg. :)

The version you are working with is for Big Sur but I have High Sierra - Is there a version of Darktable that I can get? Thanks

unfortunately from what i read online, that is a very complicated process requiring code modification and many other stuff. :( but i do wish you the best of luck!

You really have to watch this at 1.5 speed.
    Otherwise, great job!

Thanks for the video. Let me suggest a correction. Should you really use the filmic module to edit a film scan? The film module remaps the linear tones of a RAW file in a filmic, more logarithmic way, right? The film itself does not need this emulation on top of the real deal, I think. It already has these characteristics. This is like using one filmic module on top of another one.

Thank you, im happy you like it :) as to the module, i have tested it before filming, editing the same photo in lightroom to see if it causes any effects that would be harder to recreate using sliders only and i could easily recreate the same photo using just the standard sliders in lightroom, therefor i decided to use that module in this video to make the process as simple as possible for new people going into editing film negatives. Of course for people who want more creative control, they wouldnt be looking at beginner videos on editing film :)

@@grainificent You can adjust the contrast with the Negadoctor module itself with the Gamma Slider in the third tab, for example. Or use the Color Balance RGB module. Either way, keep it on. DarkTable is amazing.

@@AirFuchs1 yes, it is a great program. Any helpful comments help as well for others :)

I wanted to do some editing of 40 year old film. Darktable is unusable. It works like no other software. files.folders, undo etc. How do you undo, where the menu bar, I can't load images, i cant see a way to select a file easily and it puts all sort of junk into the file folder. I'm sure your tutorial is fine but the interface and the way most people work seems foreign

hello, it can work differently on windows. the steps mentioned in the video should work on both mac and windows. i just checked... i personally use only lightroom and photoshop but darktable is a great free program to work in. Just like Gimp. Interfaces can be sometimes complicated but spending some time and trying how things work can help you get used to it :) hope everything works well for you :)

Hi! So I'm having problems editing this piece of old film... I'm getting into film photography and I wanna be sure I can scan and edit film by myself. But it just never looks right, I've tried on photoshop, lightroom and now this and it always turns out waaaay green. But if i bring the green down it still doesn't look right... Could you help me in any way?

    • @grainificent

was it expired film? expired films are known to produce colors that can not be corrected. that is why they sell for much less than new films. also did you develop it yourself? mistakes in development can also cause color shifts that are very hard to correct. its much easier to start with black and white and get used to the entire proces because color is a higher level of difficulty :) never give up and experiment :) so was it expired film self developed or new film lab developed?
