Luther is a great series, very interesting villains and Idris Elba is awesome as Luther.

Oh hell yeah dude, you are starting Luther! 😀 I absolutely love this series, and am so happy you are getting in to it too! it gets REALLY dark and gritter as the episodes and series go along.... A fantastic choice!
I watched Luther years ago and have recently been thinking it was time to watch it again. The he knows, she knows he knows, and he knows that she knows that plays out so well.
Incredible series, which I know you'll love as the show progresses. Highly recommend reading 'Luther: The Calling' too - it's a prequel to episode one, in book form, and was intended to be filmed, but 'Fallen Sun' was written/filmed instead. Keep up with it, the twists are great and the serial killers are haunting. Plus Idris is **chef's kiss** x

@@christpower5402 Just one novel. Neil Cross wrote 'The Calling' after series one, it details the seriously grim and ever-twisting events that lead to Luther chasing Henry Madsen through the warehouse in episode one.
another series you may enjoy from the BBC is Line of Duty about police corruption
It’s well worth watching for sure.
Line of duty is good but not has good as Luther
you may recognise the main character, idris elba, as being in quite a few famous movies such as prometheus, suicide squad, and I think he also played Stringer in The Wire, but i might be wrong
Oh yeah, he's one of the better actors imo. He can and has played a variety of roles.
@@TheEclecticBeard Paul McGann who plays Mark, Luther's wife's new man, is also a superb actor.
Among his many roles is the "8th Doctor" in Doctor Who, although sadly he only got one UK/US co-production movie in the role (although he has recorded many audio stories and popped up a couple of times in the new series). The movie Withnail and I in which he stars as "I" to Richard E Grant's Withnail is a cult classic that you might like to check out. I've seen him in so many roles yet in the version of The Three Musketeers with Charlie Sheen and Kiefer Sutherland I failed to notice he actually plays two separate roles!
He also has 3 brothers who are all actors. One's now best known for playing the doctor in Call The Midwife. All four starred as brothers in a series called The Hanging Gale set during the Irish Potato Famine. I recall one reviewer lauding the production but stating they had trouble telling the brothers apart!
If you like Charles Dickens then you should definitely check out Our Mutual Friend. Both Paul McGann and Steven Mackintosh, who plays Luther's friend and colleague Ian Reed, have lead roles in it as part of a terrific cast. It's my favourite Dickens adaptation.
He was also brilliant as Nelson Mandela in the movie of his life.
Ruth Wilson is fantastic as Alice Morgan I cannot imagine anyone else playing her

It's easy to see how Idris became a movie star.He reads the script,gets into the character,and add his own dynamism to it all.Boom.

Great series as others have said. Other dark and interesting British Police shows that doesnt get mentioned is "Wire in the blood" or "Whitechapel" both are worth a watch.

Luther was a great series and the new Netflix film did not disappoint.

I'm pleased you've discovered Luther. As with many British crime series, each becomes darker than the one before it. There are five, plus a film sequel which came out just last month (Feb 2023). If you haven't yet done so, try some other British crime series. I suggest starting with Line of Duty, Broadchurch, and Hidden, which are each very different from one another. British tv generally portays police starring rôles as less romanticised than US tv does.
Messiah with Ken Stott was superb as well, brilliantly acted and extremely dark. Haven't seen anyone react to that either. Luther, Wire in the Blood, Messiah, Broadchurch are the best imo.
The first two seasons are my favorite tv show hands down! Overall every season, the sopranos ❤

This made me a Huge Idris Elba fan! He had me at "Oh, 'enry, you're gonna fawl..." One of the best cop TV series -- and any kind of series -- ever. When there was talk about who'd be the next 007, Elba's name was floated and, as a lifetime Connery/Bond fan, I thought Idris would make a great Bond for today. Instead, I guess it'll be an empowered female... sigh.

The new Luther film is fantastic. I hope it is the beginning of a franchise to rival the Bond films. We're going to rewatch all the series after watching the film.

Luther is fantastic, dark AF but good
This show is the Best! Luther is cool but Alice is the dogs bollocks… Deep down Luther never wanted to trap Alice they are both obsessed with each other ..they both love the chase

Another great mind game show is ''Criminal: UK.'' Based in a police station interrogation unit. Different suspect in each ep. David Tennant is the first. There's also French, German and Spanish versions of the show.
It's surprising that there's legitimately no reaction to this amazing show outside of yours (at least, not that I could find), so in that sense, you're the first
Genuinely hope you enjoy this show, it's on par with BBCs Sherlock (and in some aspects even surprasses it IMO)
Great acting, great stories, and that lovely wish fulfillment of "being a vigilante on the edge"
If you live alone there’s one series of this in particular that will wig you out if you watch before bed . So be warned lol

I so need to watch this series again. It's brutal for my sensitive soul, but also so well written and acted. Love Idris Elba though. Still, the Wire is easier to watch for me than this.

1st episode. Going to be changing that in the near future though.
First series was terrific but overtime the stories became a tad less compelling.
The Irish series love/hate is worth a watch.
The great Idris Elba...he made his name in this one. Another you might want to check out is "Ashes To Ashes". It's what cops should be...in my opinion.
there is also a film to watch after the series. series 3 was below of the best.
Hi Alan - hope you enjoyed this as I didn't. 3 cliches (maybe 4 now I think about it) in this first episode & I noped out which was disappointing as 3 good actors: Elba, Indira Varma & Paul McGann. With writing that lazy I have better ways to use my time.
