The working title of the Tim Allen show was Hammer Time. That name was nixed after the massive success of MC Hammer and his inescapable single "U Can't Touch This," which of course declared, "Stop! Hammer time!", both a play on the catchphrase made popular by artist MC Hammer and the name of the fictional fix-it show within the series, which was also called Hammer Time. By the time ABC committed to the project in early 1991, Allen and his team had already changed the title to Home Improvement. The show hosted by Tim Taylor in the shooting script for Home Improvement was still called Hammer Time when the first pilot with Frances Fisher was filmed in April 1991. The catalyst for the series' name change was to represent the aspect of fixing problems within the family and home life, as well as the use of mechanics and tools. Once the second phase of the pilot was produced, with all the actors that made the final cut into the series (including Patricia Richardson), Tim Taylor's Hammer Time became Tool Time. The producers settled on Home Improvement and "Tool Time" as alternates.

The thing that got me to watch the entire episodes of each season was the very first ever episode. "Don't touch the dishwasher" LOL

Yep, that was ingenious of the writers to make the very first episode about the most common kitchen appliance to fail. It was a safe bet.

I used to love this show. I had a major crush on Randy and wanted to be his girlfriend and I hated lauren because of that. I do like Tim's new show Last Man Standing but why do get the feeling that it's so similar to Home Improvement? in HI he has three sons, lives in Detroit and owns his own tv show. Last Man Standing. he has three daughters, lives in Denver and works at a major outdoor store like Cabela's and has his own online blog! as a big fan of Home Improvement, I can't help but not see the similarities between the two shows!

I was a little young to watch this when it was originally on but I do remember some of it. lol. I just remember the intro with Tim Allen's EEEAAUUGGGGHH?! grunt. XD I was 2 when it first started back in 91. Now I'm re-watching it in syndication/CZcams's full episodes and it's awesome. haha. I wish I was old enough to remember when it was a huge hit on ABC.

Glad that Mr. Allen is back on TV but I just feeling like his current show doesn't have the same feel as HI. I liked the episode last year where Patricia Richardson guest starred and they made it like an episode of Home Improvement, with the same camera angle they always used in the backyard when he talked to Wilson. lol.

You do realize this show didn't end until 1999, right? How the hell were you not old enough to watch it while it aired? Assuming that your peak childhood is from about age 5-10, you were probably old enough to remember the episodes aired between 1994-1999. Not to mention there were a shit-ton of reruns in the late 90s and early 00s. Do you honestly not remember anything before age 10? I don't mean any offense, but most people start to vividly remember stuff from about age 4/5.

I remember watching this when it premiered back in 1991 and I was only seven years old, at first I didn't know what to think of this show, it felt completely different from Married With Children, but I started getting used to it, because there things in Home Improvement that me laugh so hard, it was a great show

3:01 When I was younger back in the 90's I always said to my mother "Mom, how did those people get into a video game?" The console I had at the time was either the NES, Genesis or Super Nintendo. Me nearing my late 30's now, I'm quite nostalgic for the season 4 intro.

This song still to this day gives me anxiety because when I was a kid I knew this show being on meant the next day was Monday and I had to go to school where my teacher used to lock me in the hat room at recess and hit me with a really long eraser on a stick! I kept telling people and no one believed me!
