- Thanks to Giants for allowing me to share an early preview of the Platinum DLC with you, I've had a lot of questions over the last few days about the redwoods and what you can do with them, so I thought I'd do a few tests.

I was unable to cut down a full size redwood with a standard chainsaw, but I believe other people may have. so it could be possible, but everything else in the video still stands - it's more hassle than it's worth 😉👍

With this map's emphasis on forestry, I would have loved to see an entire production chain on making firewood. There are some really cool wood cutter/splitter combination attachments for skid-steers, but I'd imagine that an outdoor factory animation like the old sawmill has with logs being sawn and then split and stacked would have been really cool. Come'on Giants! 🙂
Would give you something to do with deadwood since it really isn't good for much other than woodchips.
Fire wood on a pallet or you could load it in a trailer. That'd be super cool

Giants - Don't cut down the sequoia trees

I know that in the current era redwoods have some protection but the wood produced from these trees has premium properties in terms of strength , durability and resistance to rotting. I would suggest there is an option mod to enable the full potential of these trees in terms of productivity and product capacities. Possibly limiting the products produced (no wood chipping, structural timbers only) and a limited harvest rate and required replanting rate. Also there may be a premium price for a 'clean' log at the mills, remove all projections and 'twigs'. On the real mill most cutting is automatic and anything out of round takes more time with higher wastage.
I agree. I don't know why giants decided to leave these out. In the real world these trees are a prized product if not protected. Especially the redwood cedar.
I agree. If they want to protect the old growth redwoods, that's one thing. But allow them to be planted and harvested like any other tree in their sim for profit like it's done in the real world.
Extremely brittle aswell not made for construction
Nothing in the lumber business goes to waste, even all the scraps from milling rounds, is turned into chips, mulch, fertilizer, pellets you name it, all wood has stored energy including methane which is a completely renewable fuel and energy source, trees are and always have been one of the greatest gifts to all living things...
@Ghost Division actually that's nit entirely true, it all depends on the section of the tree if I remember correctly and redwood is actually a softwood member much like maple...

Super keen on this dlc few more hours left. I don't think I'll be jumping straight on to the new map but I'll be using the equipment on my current map as it has hills and will allow me to know move the timber faster. And can we all just take a minute to appreciate all the uploads this gentleman has done

I can’t wait for a Vancouver map and some real logging equipment. Brix’s pacific/lizard p16, unbranded Madill 009 yarders, some super snorkels, Madill log loaders. Anything that ran on Vancouver island I want
Both Sequoia Sempervirens and Sequoia Gigantia grow very well and very fast here in New Zealand. They can easily reach over 100m in height in less than 100 years. Being non-native, they are legal to grow, harvest, process and export. I have logged quite a few, but they were used for building log houses.
Hey, i just bought some land in real life, and it is planned to stay in the familly and i wanted to plant a tree for my first kid like my parents did.

Thank you for the video. I was hoping they would allow redwoods to be cut. Only the giant redwoods are protected; redwood trees are still logged in the states. This is evident by my redwood deck, which is popular in the NW US, where I live.

You do get the cost of the container refunded when you sell the wood inside them. So you have to deduct the purchase price of the container from the sale.
Another tip...I used the tractor and winch provided in New Player mode and parked it just uphill and closer to the front end of the Fliegl 12m autoload trailer (Fliegl Timber Runner Autoload Wood mod on Modhub). Every log that I winched up the hill loaded flawlessly onto the trailer.

Selling that container with the redwood, for 8,000. Keep in mind that you also got the money back from the price of the container. So if I remember, doesn't the container cost 5,000 initially ?
Yes true, but the same is true of selling the birch too, so that's a constant

@@Eddiebleezy No matter which container you buy, when you go and sell it with wood loaded into it, the sell price you get back is what the wood sold for plus the full refund price of the container. I'm assuming Giants did this so you aren't penalized for spending money on containers to sell wood and have to eat the cost of the container each time.
@@Eddiebleezy you buy the container for $5000 for example, fill it with wood, and when you sell it you might get $10,000, that would be $5,000 of wood + the $5,000 you paid for the container
But the container was not full so maybe its still worth selling the trees in the containers

Man I'm pretty bummed out that these trees weren't part of the main emphasis of logging....When I first saw them I was so excited because they were so big and the challenge was an exciting prospect. They should have some missions at the very least that requires them, or set it up where you have to purchase a permit to harvest so many per month or something along those lines. Why else would you need such a huge loader for? it sure isn't for grabbing piles of logs at once. god knows how difficult that is lol. This DLC has been pretty good so far. If there's one thing they need to fix its the ability to get your forks/claws under multiple or even single logs as its very hard to pick them up because you cant get under them without serious effort. That and the weight of trees needs to corollate a bit more to the trailers and the truck hauling them ect. A fully loaded truck should struggle to get going and to brake lol. All in all its a great dlc. The map is well designed!

IRL sequoia shatter along the grain when felled unless dropped very carefully, resulting in essentially firewood. This is partly why there are some left, despite the rapacious logging of times past.
I was just reading up about that actually Birly, sounds like a bad wood to use in productions anyway 👍

I found lowering that front plate helps to lift these it really stabilises it
15:46 You kinda forgot to look where the product spawns, cause after a certain interval it takes the amount of liters of whatever it takes to make a pallet of whatever and sub- nvm just look where they spawn under the little canopy/shelter near the tracks
Actually the old sawmil periodially empties in the pit for woodchips, you will need to check how much you got there in order for it to be a correct measurement for woodchips. i think it empties around 10l.
Im at a bit of a loss as to why Giants would put a tree into the game if they don't want them to be cut down. I understand they are protected IRL. then maybe DONT set the map in an area that's a redwood reserve?? I have had some questions about giants decision making process, like not needing to feed animals but I always understood since the age rating of the game Is what it is, the redwood thing however just seens kinda dumb or maybe I'm just missing the point? That's so much for letting me know before i buy the expansion. That would have annoyed me to find out In real time 😀. I checked the community tab and didn't see. kind of stupid putting a species of tree in a forestry harvesting map . but i have an idea as to why they done it . instead of putting some of that money they make off this game into an organization that plants protected trees and fights to save them they rather be tight wads and put the species in a logging map in their game and try and persuade people to plant them and not cut them and brag about how they are helping out . in the process ruining the very game they make because you plant this species of tree and are pretty much forced not to cut them and then your map is so filled up with this species of tree you cant plant the harvestable trees which in turn ruins game play. ignorance at it finest when it comes to game design and fun .
@@TimberManiac8791 I'm guessing mod makers are going to undo this sooner or later. I'd guess it's buried somewhere in am XML file that they have no value. Not 100% sure because I don't know the architecture, but I agree Giants really didn't do themselves or their players any favors with adding the silly trees

Giants is a European based company so maybe it's because it's midnight in the 15 where their HQ is? Just a theory on my part, might be wrong.
I think the FS22 version of Black Sheep Modding's Ponsse harvester will cut these - I might be wrong ( or overly ambitious). I am sure I read that they have a ridiculous cutting width.
It may be that the return on the tree is based on a "standard log volume" value, with a small adjustment by species. Nothing extra for wider logs!
BTW, do you know what the first RR car directly behind the engine, is set up to haul?

Using the "Tree Devourer" mod, I still only got 3737L of wood chips from a single large Sequoa. On another note, After purchasing the grass fields and creating silage (thinking I'd make some quick $), the only buy point was supposed to be the Silverrun Market. When I tried to drop off loose silage, I got the message that "silage is not accepted here." Perhaps they only take silage bales?

Wonder if it's the same if you plant one yourself or for wood chips if you grinded it away with an implment. Im assuming it is though. Im sure some modders will make something to remove the penalty or new tree all together. Im imagining if you weren't penalized you would fill containers or productions with a single tree.

My game is updating right now. Idk if it'll have the DLC. But it is updating. 2 mins left. I bought the platnum edition when the game 1st came out though. Idk if they're releasing a little early or what's going on.

I opened a test game yesterday, cheated in money to get equipment just to see if these things were worth it, because in the sell screen, wood is wood and there isn't different prices for different woods which suggested that the giant sequoia would be the most profitable tree by sheer volume. I was really surprised to see it wasn't really worth much.
There’s a mod on mod hub it’s a harvester’s that has a cutting diameter of 495cm it’s the biggest in game and works
As a species, we need to mature to a point where cutting down/killing another species that can be thousands of years old is not the right thing to do; profit be dammed! There have been times since my journey began back in FS13 that after a stressful day in real life, nothing beats jumping into my favorite tractor, driving out into the wilderness, having a cup of coffee, and relaxing while enjoying the peaceful view. It's especially nice in a rain or snowstorm. I want to think that perhaps the developers put the Redwoods in for that purpose; to admire. 😎
That's fine and dandy, but this is a game, and they should be worth their weight and our time spent processing them period, a 40ton tree worth the same as 2ton tree is absolutely ridiculous and insulting, hope it changes sooner than later, what if you spend actual real life days trying to clear a nice spot of land of these redwoods and all that work nets you next to nothing compared to other harvestable trees, it makes no sense and honestly is very upsetting to think about, even in real life redwoods are growing faster than they can be cut and harvested for firewood, federal leasing of logging companies are there all the time, it's protected but still government has to have it maintained to keep it healthy...
Chill Michelle, as you say it's a game, it just doesn't really matter, there are 12 other varieties of trees to plant and harvest.

I tried adding a BGA mod to the map (on PC), and while I was able to put it down, no triggers are visible, and it isn't visible in the productions screen. When I went into construction mode to remove it, I cannot demolish it. After hitting the "Demolish" button and then clicking on the BGA highlighted in blue, it only gives the option to "Esc Back" and not sell it.
When you were looking at the planks and woodchips created, I dont think you took into account the pallets that were made. As you started to speed it up I thought I saw planks hit 200 something

Hello, I was wondering if you ever had the issue with the lag spikes or shuttering in game not due to under powered gpu
If it’s directly after an update that’s thecc vid shader cache rebuilding and should clear up after a while, I tend to fly around the map after an update to clear it up a bit quicker

Once modders actually make this activity profitable, I might just get into logging for the first time!
Try it out you'll love it, I do realistic southern style logging and have only logged since fs15, don't even like the farming aspect of the games at all, I absolutely love the logging and equipment, once I started logging that's all I do.
But one thing I can say about this dlc, I don't care if you make a million dollars off one log buy using the containers, that's one part I definitely will not be doing, picture a real life Logger dragging a shipping container or sea can as we call em, out into the woods and shoving logs in it end first, lmao, maybe they do in Giants world, but the idea is pretty silly. But the rest of the equipment, I can't wait for, I'm like a kid on Christmas eve, I'm literally bouncing around with excitement.
Just like the red wood, might be big an heavy, might not be easy to cut, might not be worth a ton of money, but man are they gonna be fun to log !
Logs are shipped all over the world in shipping containers it's a very common way of moving logs around
I am aware that wood is transported by all sorts of ways, been a Logger since you was still a twinkle in your mama's eye, but I was referring to how nobody is gonna drag a sea can out in the woods or even to the landing an stuff it full of logs, a shipping yard, now they will pack them in an ship email after a Logger cuts em an hauls them to the mill, an the gets hauled to a shipping facility or the mill runs it's own.
I noticed the papermill takes trees and i was wondering if they would buy them?
FSG, to get the actual profit from just the tree, just take the price of the sell rewards minus the cost of the container. That will give you what you made for just the tree.
But as the container is a constant whatever tree you load up and sell the profit will be the same regardless of minusing the container or not 👍

What if you used one of the wood chipper mods that grinds the tree and collects the wood chips?
unless you cut it really small it won't go in the big chipper, and I didn't have the patience to put the whole tree in there 😂
@@TheFarmSimGuy I was thinking about the chipper mod that mounts to the 3-point on a tractor and dumps the chips into a towed trailer. "Lizard Devour Trees" mod.
Only thing I wish they did with this map, those decorative logs around the sawmill were actual storage and not decorative. Cut down all these trees and no place to store them
I am curious what would happen using a stand alone peaceable woodchipper and then selling the wood chips.
You get tiny amounts of woodchips, it's definitely not worth it

Or… maybe they updated the game in a later patch so the trees were worth more because everyone complained. This vid was made when the expansion was released a year ago, so rather that trying to make smart ass comment and trying to call me out, do some research first so you don’t look silly 👍
Nice and interesting video,like many people said most of this giants Redwoods are protected and cant be cutted down except when they are old and sick.
I think Giants intentionally choose this low prices for Redwoods to prevent players from cutting lol,like some type of education in forestry.
It's a great DLC,only thing that i dont like is a fact that you cant plant all this new types of trees on other maps,this is kinda sad and i dont see a point of this,and why Giants blocked the samplings outside the Platinum DLC.
This is their first Logging map, iirc.
Given previous behaviours it is likely they will be available, via the modhub, along with equipment - another thing I'd like to use on other maps!

I never had any problem cutting them down without any mods. You have to look at the harvester size head to know what it can cut. An my normal chainsaw cut them down as well. Odd
in the UINTED states its not aginst the law to cut red wood just a few of the old ones is proteced
Is that redwood in general or Sequoia? I've read that it's illegal to cut down Sequoia Redwoods

There are tree farms in Walla Walla WA that grow them for harvest. If you look in 29 CFR 1910.266 it tells you the regulations for harvesting them. They are very expensive hard wood!
I could have used this information yesterday. I spent hours loading one of these. For very little return.i suppose the tell tell sign was having to cut the limbs.

There are modded harvesters that advertise being able to cut 4.63 M.... but every one I tried still wouldn't even cut the 71 cm trees on the starting property. The reason I bought it? a) on sale
b) not knowing what the max diameter on the new trees is, I simply figured it was a dimension I wouldn't have to worry about for the regular stuff.

6:57 34 tonnes of water would be 34k liters. I would expect those logs to give you around 30k liters.

It sells for more if you use the measure tool and cut at the proper length with no penalties a 36 t tree sells for 19k
But still 36 tonnes of ponderosa would give you about 130k so still not cost efficient
I've been able to cut the Giant Seqouia trees with a standard chainsaw. I just dont like working with them since a 12m nearly 1ton Spruce gives around 1000L of Tree. Meanwhile a Seqouia weighs 35tons and only gives 200L. Like wtf.
And also I've used HR Forst harvesters since they can cut ~430cm diameter trees.
I wonder if I can plant one as a centerpiece to my farm lol.

what is the name of the way you can lift heavy objects
The sawmill empties the woodchips in the round storage area at the back every 10 liters. You need to check that area for the actual ammount of woodchips produced. Same goes for planks they move to the storage area next to the sawmill when they reach a certain volume.
Those are tiny little Sequoia trees compared to the real deal.
I think you get money for the actual container, that why it seems more
but it was the same for both trees, mius 5000 and the amount for the tree was the same but the sequoia was 20 times heavier

but will these make more woodchips than regular tree? not in production chain

I think it's just a bug, OR Giants wants to draw attention to the fact that they are under protection and should not be felled
I agree with the latter, I don't think it's a bug, it's to put people off cutting them down
As long as there isn't a huge chunk of the map that has them I don't care
@@TheFarmSimGuy Why even put them in the game if we're not supposed to cut them, they will just be in the way making a lot of land useless unless you want to waste your time clearing worthless trees.

They give you 5000 liters of woodchips at most for a 41 meter tree. kinda weird for 40 tonnes of log.
It does work, but again doesn't make much of anything, about 5 or 6 to fill 50k liters I believe if even that, they give you something but nowhere near realistic for the sheer weight, honestly the most unrealistic thing I've dealt with in this game so far lol, here you go gamers 40 ton trees so pretty, so majestic, not worth their weight barely better than deadwood lol, frickin devs man...
So if you can plant red woods do you get full price for those?

The normal stihl cut them for me.. only did one and it was trash price wise.
Whats the max diameter the chainsaw can cut with the platinum dlc i know the harvesters can cut different diameters so whats the max on the chainsaw?

@@AAWAFabi If they are like a standard real life chainsaw the blade would be about 30-40cm(13-18").
Ofc you can get proper logging chainsaws with a much longer blade, up to 127cm(53").
