      @@slowassv8 Honestly it kind of depends on what you buy. First and foremost DO NOT buy one without service history. You will hate yourself if you do and it will destroy your pocket book. Secondly buying one with the timing already done, especially if it's done with metal guides, is highly advised. You can buy one without the timing stuff done but you need to be prepared to do it yourself if the chains start rattling on start up for more than a couple seconds. Trust me, you'll know if it's happening. Check when you test drive and make sure the engine hasn't been started or warmed up before you test drive. Other than the timing most of the 4.2 is a really solid engine. I have nearly 230k on mine now and it's still going. Burns a lot of oil, but never gives me any issues at all otherwise. One day I'd love to pull the engine and do a full refresh. It's worth it to be honest. Last thing I will say is don't buy it expecting it to be fast. It's a great, GREAT weekend or daily cruiser, but it's not a race car and never will be without dumping tons of money into it. Put a good exhaust on it, drive the piss out of it, and have fun.

    I bet that timing chain sounds great on a cold start. If it doesn't make any noises yet or just a slight noise then you could still save it without rebuilding anything, regardless of what anyone else tells you. Run a good cleaner through the crankcase for 30 minutes to an hour at idle, something like B12 or Seafoam, the main culprit for the chain noise is a clogged pick up tube mesh, and the mesh on the tensioners, both due to improper oil change intervals. When both are clogged the tensioner doesnt have enough oil pressure. It's not Audi's fault that some people do oil changes once every 30k miles

      @@DOMS4. Nothing false about it. I've worked on plenty of these and other VW engines with similar "problems". Not long ago I replaced a 3.6 vr6 in an 07 Touareg, the engine I dropped in had 150k miles and it would rattle for 3-5 seconds on a cold start. I dropped the oil pan and found an almost completely clogged pick up tube. Cleaned it and ran a cleaner through the crankcase, no more noise. Oil viscosity and oil change intervals play a major role, if you've ever replaced a tensioner you'll see how fine the mesh screen is, any sludge will prevent proper oil pressure. Believe what you want but don't say it's false.

    • @DOMS4.
      @DOMS4. Před 3 lety +2

      @@dantesinfern0647 I've owned plenty of these and pulled motors on literally countless amounts of 4.2's since 2012. The main culprit is failure to maintain oil check valves, wear/tear and the simple fact it has plastic timing guides. I have personally done a timing job on 3 out of the 5 4.2 S4's I've had, to say it's as simple as cleaning the pickup and tensioners and pouring a can in is misleading to ppl who might want the car. Simple fact is plastic engine components are more likely to fail the same reason B7 S4's are likely to have valve cover gasket leaks sooner (warped plastic valve covers). Any one of the timing components could fail it's based on luck not service, to blame it solely on oil changes is crazy. My dealer maintained '05 had a history from 2004 of frequent changes from Audi and still had a failure. Sure a 30k mile oil change does no one any favors but I haven't touched a single audi even half the mileage over, hold Audi engineers accountable for design errors it's not a perfect motor.

    • @robi4387
      @robi4387 Před 2 lety

      @@DOMS4. I thought dealers recommended 20,000 mile 2 year oil changes when (with 20:20 hindsight) it should have been 1 year and 10,000 or less. Much also depends on the number of cold starts and miles driven. To the extent that a 100 miles cruise with clean oil could be no more injurious than a cold start and immediate fast pull away with 20,000 mile oil. So that's why some high milers are good and some low milers aren't.

      It's a lifetime chain setup. Not Audi's fault that people don't perform proper oil change intervals. Clogged up pick up tube and tensioner mesh leads to low oil pressure and chain failure. If you catch it early you can still save the engine with a good cleaner in the crankcase.

      Bald Get'n Buggered I agree, my 330k mile Jetta TDI has 0 issues, and it most likely die to proper oil change intervals and maintenence. Other people complain about Turbo failures and camshaft failures. Its not the manufacturerers fault that people don’t do maintenance.

If its making constant noise back there its gotta be done. If its making noise at start up for a little bit its normal. The one really bad design feature on these. Ive had to take off bad trim wrap before and its a pain. If its aluminum under there use steel wool and brake clean. The trim on these is pretty easy to take off. Be careful on front drivers piece.
