Ricky T 1.8T was my first car 😃
I have one with about every problem possible. 😫 Love hate relationship all the way.
@@SpadeNya yes mine has issues as well. She has 376000km. Still average 6.5L/100km and Quattro is amazing here in Canada. And sure beats driving a Hyundai . No offense to those who do 😆
I’m currently in an APR stage 3 b6 a4 1.8t. Next project is a b5 s4 with 500 whp
Anthony Zastoupil My first car was the passat 1.8t, ai always dreamed of apr stage 3
Coming from a b7 s4 owner I think you got a great deal on this. I love my S4 despite how everyone is so afraid of the 4.2 timing chain issues.
I hope to own a B7 S4 one day as well, looks way better imo.
just buy one with the chains done and don’t worry about it, bought mine at 128k the chains were done at 125k. she’s at 135k no issues knock on wood lol
It’s not just the engine timing guides and tensioners. It’s also the valve guides and cylinder bores. It’s a complete engine tear down and perhaps a replacement cylinder block.
Can y’all please give me some pointers I’m bouta get rid of my Beamer and grab one of these , I have a 6 series that’s always having problems am i getting myself in the same dilemma or is the 2004-2008 s4 reliable ?
@@slowassv8 Honestly it kind of depends on what you buy. First and foremost DO NOT buy one without service history. You will hate yourself if you do and it will destroy your pocket book. Secondly buying one with the timing already done, especially if it's done with metal guides, is highly advised. You can buy one without the timing stuff done but you need to be prepared to do it yourself if the chains start rattling on start up for more than a couple seconds. Trust me, you'll know if it's happening. Check when you test drive and make sure the engine hasn't been started or warmed up before you test drive. Other than the timing most of the 4.2 is a really solid engine. I have nearly 230k on mine now and it's still going. Burns a lot of oil, but never gives me any issues at all otherwise. One day I'd love to pull the engine and do a full refresh. It's worth it to be honest. Last thing I will say is don't buy it expecting it to be fast. It's a great, GREAT weekend or daily cruiser, but it's not a race car and never will be without dumping tons of money into it. Put a good exhaust on it, drive the piss out of it, and have fun.
I need to hire you to find me these type of deals at copart.
Vehicle Virals 👀
You are lucky that the timing chain and tensioners weren’t bad. Also that the transmission still works, being an auto they usually shit the bed at 80k.
Ian Holmen I agree, the previous owners probably replaced it at 80k lol
@@JohnStax98 well it's been another 80k since then :'(

Sean Griffin I agree!
I simply love this car, I've been looking for 1 for a while, I have an A4 1.8T n it's a dream
I had a B5 1.8T as my first car, definitely a lot of fun.
I bet that timing chain sounds great on a cold start. If it doesn't make any noises yet or just a slight noise then you could still save it without rebuilding anything, regardless of what anyone else tells you. Run a good cleaner through the crankcase for 30 minutes to an hour at idle, something like B12 or Seafoam, the main culprit for the chain noise is a clogged pick up tube mesh, and the mesh on the tensioners, both due to improper oil change intervals. When both are clogged the tensioner doesnt have enough oil pressure. It's not Audi's fault that some people do oil changes once every 30k miles
Bald Get'n Buggered Ill give it a try, thanks for the tips!
False but sure wouldn't hurt
@@DOMS4. Nothing false about it. I've worked on plenty of these and other VW engines with similar "problems". Not long ago I replaced a 3.6 vr6 in an 07 Touareg, the engine I dropped in had 150k miles and it would rattle for 3-5 seconds on a cold start. I dropped the oil pan and found an almost completely clogged pick up tube. Cleaned it and ran a cleaner through the crankcase, no more noise. Oil viscosity and oil change intervals play a major role, if you've ever replaced a tensioner you'll see how fine the mesh screen is, any sludge will prevent proper oil pressure. Believe what you want but don't say it's false.
@@dantesinfern0647 I've owned plenty of these and pulled motors on literally countless amounts of 4.2's since 2012. The main culprit is failure to maintain oil check valves, wear/tear and the simple fact it has plastic timing guides. I have personally done a timing job on 3 out of the 5 4.2 S4's I've had, to say it's as simple as cleaning the pickup and tensioners and pouring a can in is misleading to ppl who might want the car. Simple fact is plastic engine components are more likely to fail the same reason B7 S4's are likely to have valve cover gasket leaks sooner (warped plastic valve covers). Any one of the timing components could fail it's based on luck not service, to blame it solely on oil changes is crazy. My dealer maintained '05 had a history from 2004 of frequent changes from Audi and still had a failure. Sure a 30k mile oil change does no one any favors but I haven't touched a single audi even half the mileage over, hold Audi engineers accountable for design errors it's not a perfect motor.
@@DOMS4. I thought dealers recommended 20,000 mile 2 year oil changes when (with 20:20 hindsight) it should have been 1 year and 10,000 or less. Much also depends on the number of cold starts and miles driven. To the extent that a 100 miles cruise with clean oil could be no more injurious than a cold start and immediate fast pull away with 20,000 mile oil. So that's why some high milers are good and some low milers aren't.
Funny thing is I was bidding against you on this item. I wanted it for parts and the exhaust was my main reason. I have a 04 6speed. I stopped at $1300. Good luck buddy

Funny, I just picked up an 03 A4 avant v6 6 speed a month ago for the same price but with b pillar damage. $100 more than you paid for delivery. I generally drive em for a few months maybe put a little money into them then sell. As long as I break even I'm good..
Not much room to sell outright on the s4 with that v8 and those timing chains looming

the timing chains had to have been done at 160k, looks like you have no rattle too. I would try to get it clean and flip it, prolly have until 180k till you gotta swap a motor / do chains again
I think they say every 80k miles, but if you use reinforced chain guides it should be all set.
If you get the upgraded Timing chain kit with the upgraded metal guides from the RS4 from JHM. You're all set to go for the rest of the car/engines life.
They even have en entire tutorial video on their YT of the whole process for DIY.
Hate to see these so abused. Hope you take good care of it!

I want a manual too, whats the benefit of a RS4 gearbox?
@@JohnStax98 i think it has shorter ratios if im not mistaken so will probably give out a bit more torque. The car should be done this weekend. So by monday i can tell you what its like. Wont lie, was a bitch trying to find an s4 box and they wanted an arm, leg and kidney to fix the one ive got which litrally has broken synchros. the pillar and roof will be a nuisance to fix- Im sure there will be other issues with 160k but tstill a good buy
Bikeman Thanks!
You’ve got an a4 bonnet grill there instead of an S4 1, it won’t match your bumper grill when you find 1. Your rear badges are in completely the wrong place and by the looks of it if it is a miltek it’s for a b7 not a B6 hence the 4 pipes
Ryan Jon I knew something about the front end didn’t look like an S4, thanks for the info!

Alex I think the rhd ones have them in a different spot.

Saw a little ploom of corrosion on the bottom of the coolant bottle. Just need a new one of those before you add coolant. They arent terribly expensive
found one for $34
Is that the one with the timing chain against the firewall from the time that Audi was convinced it was a lifetime part?
John Schmidt Yes, the one that costs $6000+ to replace if you bring it to the dealer.
@@JohnStax98 probably explains why those things go for so cheap ... you planning on keeping it long enough for that headache? If it makes you feel any better, I have a D3 S8 so even a simple tune up involves partially dropping the engine.
It's a lifetime chain setup. Not Audi's fault that people don't perform proper oil change intervals. Clogged up pick up tube and tensioner mesh leads to low oil pressure and chain failure. If you catch it early you can still save the engine with a good cleaner in the crankcase.
Bald Get'n Buggered I agree, my 330k mile Jetta TDI has 0 issues, and it most likely die to proper oil change intervals and maintenence. Other people complain about Turbo failures and camshaft failures. Its not the manufacturerers fault that people don’t do maintenance.
I love my 04 s4 it’s too fun. My question is can I turbo a v8?
sam eden Yea, but theres no room so you would have to mount it outside of the engine bay 😅

You can re sell it for prolly about 4g how many miles? What year? Rare seats and the V8. That's 4g. All day. I love the hustle. I'm an wholesaler. I just bought a 99 a6 V6 for 300.00 with 148k. No dents. Worth about 2 g but I'm keeping it it's Quattro.
You can immediately tell what type of person had this poor s4. No check engine light maybe for a day or two. Good deal in total if she is sound but I would get ready for some surprises. Ditch those rims and see if it has coilovers and not just lowering springs and get it off the ground a bit. Not sure if thats a miltek catback. Looks odd or maybe its mounted poorly. Hope you can get it into shape. Good luck.
Thank you 😊
I was able to find the previous owner, and I was surprised to learn that he is the owner of a Shop where he services and repairs cars.
@@JohnStax98 Wow I would not have guessed that. Well hopefully he serviced the timing chain in this guy. The guides and tensioners go on these and the motor need to be out to service it. If its making constant noise back there its gotta be done. If its making noise at start up for a little bit its normal. The one really bad design feature on these. Ive had to take off bad trim wrap before and its a pain. If its aluminum under there use steel wool and brake clean. The trim on these is pretty easy to take off. Be careful on front drivers piece. It will good with some elbow grease.
