  • Before you do an overseeding this fall watchin this video on why you do not need peat moss for it. I had horrible results last year using my peatmoss spread and speading peat moss on my lawn. Do not make the same mistake as I did.

I disagree. Ive seeded many times and always had nothing but great results with peat moss. Anywhere that didnt have peat moss coverage was either super slow or little germination. There's no way I'd seed without peat moss. Maybe just user error? To each his own.

I agree... mostly. 😬 I think Compost is a much better option when it comes to over seeding and this year I plan on using compost with my fall over-seed. But I think peat moss has a place when it comes to seeding a new lawn. Just my opinion and I do understand you were specifically talking about over seeding. So, good stuff!!

Maybe a new lawn that had never used it before but compost is still better for the soil. Good luck with your fescue overseed this year.

peat moss is expensive and it washes away easily with rain, but I like it because it covers seed without smothering it so the seed can easily push up out of the soil. compost is cheaper and better for not getting washed away in heavier rain, but I have found when it compacts baby grass can struggle to push out of the soil

I just bought a bag of peat moss. Last year I did a over seed and just used my hands as my local nursery’s spread rental out for the day. I have noticed and I think with your project I saw the same - that is the Landzie seemed to spread the moss too thick/deep - or am I wrong? Just curious as this weekend going to seed spots that need new seed (had to kill Bermuda that infected my fescue) and not sure if to rent the spreader or not.

What part of NJ are you in? I am in Williamstown and had to nuke 3.5k sqft of my yard and was thinking of going peat moss or greenview seeding success for that area. Was not going to top dress any of the overseed in the other 8.5k of lawn space.
Looking to overseed the weekend of the 15th/16th.

companies that harvest peet moss destroy the enviromnent, those areas become more likely to have flooding issues

Peat moss always creates problems in lawns here in Massachusetts

It’s been a great summer for grass this year with all of the rain. 👌

I am completely agreeing with you but why manure?

    • @WooderBoyProductions

Compost breaks down over time faster and holds the nutrients more I. The soil.

If you are thinking black kow type bagged manure be very aware how “chunky” it can be. Also, if you want it to spread easier, throw it on a tarp in a driveway or something and get it drier. Then screen it through 1/4 hardware cloth. Not a fun job but it works much better for spreading it. Peat moss bales are usually really dry. One other concern of other compost material could also be what exact nutrients there are.
Black Kow is only a .5,.5,.5 but others can be more.
