Historic Buildings at Darjeeling

    Home of the heritage building and acclaimed as the “Queen of the Himalayas”-Darjeeling as a long established building architecture has attracted all over the world. The architectural styles of Darjeeling town, itself laid out by Lord Napier of Royal Engineers. In the year 1839 there were only ten huts and hundred people. The Darjeeling town is primarily a development by the British as a hill resort for the British officers to spend their leisure time in the summer. They had observed that the Climate and place was suitable for health. So that they had proposed to make Darjeeling as a summer resort as per recommendation of Lt. General G.A. Lloyd. Officially building architectural worked was formed for British administration in 1843 with thirty numbers of buildings such as “ Mount Pleasant” the house of Lt. General Lloyd (Inventor of Darjeeling). “Bryan Stone” where Sir Joseph Hooker lived. “Oak Lodge”, “ Vernon Lodge” etc. In the year 1850 the Town Hall, present municipality building of Darjeeling was established.
    History of 19th century of Darjeeling is mostly occupied by the constructional activities and engineering achievement and also most of heritage building was formed during this century. Since then Darjeeling is being developed as an important building architectural drawing in the hill station. Its building architectural drawing and the philosophy of its beatification reflect the sense of esthetic of renaissance period of Europe and also style has been influenced by the Greek and Rome architecture. It has been made according to the meteorological weather and geographical condition as well as to reflect British architectural style.
    In the year 1862 the public work department was formed and started various construction works such as secretariat building, Thorn Cottage, Raj Bhavan, Kutchery, Richmondhill, Rivershill, old Kutchery Building, The Natural History Museum, Bloom Field Barrack, Eden Hospital Louis Jubilee Sanatorium, Dowhill & Victoria School, Union Chapel, St. Andrew’s Church, St. Joseph’s Church etc

    There are many cemeteries in Darjeeling which needs attention.There you can dig the forgotten history of the pioneers and founders of Darjeeling.

    Why Bengal Government doesn't declare historical and heritage buildings of Darjeeling a protected monument.Darjeeling was summer capital of India.

      Yes ma,am you are correct. We are forgotten heritage. as a heritage profession I feel it. My research completed from Italy and they are aware about protection and value of historic and heritage object. I written so many article in news paper but no body to take action / aware to protect our fabulous collection in Darjeeling.

    Britishers have contributed so much so much to India than they have looted but still Indians never give credit to Britishers rather.always speak ill of them
    On the other hand Mughals did nothing except atrocities but Indians never never talk about it
